Mother Earth News: Organic Seeds Are Becoming More Available

An article in the current issue of Mother Earth News reports that organic and heirloom variety garden seeds are becoming more widely available.

There's an increase in the number of specialty companies that focus on organic or heirloom vegetable seed, and large, mainstream seed companies are now adding some of these products to their offerings. The article features some seed company veterans and newcomers, discussing their offerings and operations, and offers an "Honor Roll" of sustainable seed companies.

And there one is~~~

Many eyes go through the meadow, but few see the flowers in it.

---Ralph Waldo Emerson

On my coming back
how many pathways are there
through the spring grasses?

---Saigyo

I have learned to have very modest goals for society and myself, things like clean air, green grass, children with bright eyes, not being pushed around, work that suits one's abilities, plain tasty food, and occasional satisfying nookie.

---Paul Goodman

A few years ago a colony of honeybees came to live in our house. I was working just outside our garage when their celebration began. I suddenly was aware of three large bees hovering menacingly 2 feet away just above my sightline. I realized by the size these were soldiers, and since they were looking me straight in the 3rd eye I made a beeline for the house. Sure enough, within a minute the swarm arrived and surrounded the northwest end of our home. We all stood in Ilona's room and watched the intensity outside. There appeared to be hundreds of thousands of bees, and the noise and the numbers were terrifying. It made you sorry you've seen too many science fiction flicks.  More >

 Gardening the Buddhist Way

As some of you may be aware it's been about a year now that I've been struggling to get the garden into some kind of shape ! There wasn't a single flower anywhere when we moved to this house and now they're begining to come up just about all over the place !!

One of my biggest problems though are the insects - and believe me here in the tropics there are more creepy crawlies than I ever dreamt of in my worst nightmares ! LOL!
One of the worst are the Fire Ants !! The locals tell me that the only solution is to pour petrol into the nest - yes well - you can imagine how much I appreciated that wee gem !

The gardening centre sells some kind of toxic chemical stuff - so - I tried it - it works great ! Thing is it kills everything else too- plants lizards small birds !!Quell Horror !
So I'm still scratching my head to come up with a more human solution - I don't mind the insects too much and I'd be happy to let them be ... if they don't eat all my flowers and veggies I'll be more than happy to share !

So - now I'm thinking that to really enjoy my garden I have to try and find a way to limit the damage and at the same time respect the fact that all animal life is precious and has meaning !
For the moment I'm trying to learn about organic gardening in an effort to find a solution that we all can live with - me the plants and the insects alike !

(any tips will be more than welcome thankyou !)
