If we were not already Buddha, we could not bow to the Buddha. When the Buddha receives our bow, we become one with him. At that very moment the practice of the bow is actualized. The Buddha does not force the practice of the bow upon us, but that which has been offered is brought back to us.

---Dainin Katagiri

Silence is as deep as Eternity; speech as shallow as Time.

---Thomas Carlyle

Those who believe they have plenty of time get ready only at the time of death. Then they are ravaged by regret. But isn't it far too late?

---Padmasambhava

For over 40 years I have honored my teacher, mentor, and friend, John Tagliabue. More recently he has retired from work at Bates College in Maine, relocated with his lovely wife Grace to Rhode Island, and encouraged me to distribute his recent poems on the Internet. He doesn't use computers himself, and a couple years ago wrote an elegy to his manual typewriter. When we returned from Canada yesterday, a small envelope of poems were waiting. I think I'd better get them to you right away.

The photo is of John last year at Bates with 2 students who just won the first John Tagliabue Prize For Creative Writing. [link]  More >

May there always be sunshine
May there always be blue skies
May there always be mama
May there always be me

Repeat this verse in every language in the world

How can this affect humanity? Interconnectedness of life.
May we all see this with our hearts

 Paper Wings

My crazy mind
Brings me bloody platters
To clean and use again

Curious conditions churning within
Weaving foggy wonders
To confuse and misapply

…This fragile origami bird
Is stained and has been folded wrongly

…This drifting creature
Used to fly against the bright sky
With matching colors and thoughts
It would return bearing rainbows

…This earnest miner
Has surfaced with no ore
Instead is empty handed
And is consumed by “black lung”

Unbridled imaginings
And child-like fear

Are in the dust,
stirring

Unfitting halo

And paper wings

…slowly turning…

They are turning into rust.

Let Go

The darkness sleeps
I can feel the cool, soft air
It is breathing, slowly
How the light seems harsh!  More >

 The Grand Transformation
29 Jul 2004 @ 18:25, by centrifuge. Ideas, Creativity
Dualistic perspectives of the non-dualistic whole
Have been plaguing my mind with doubt
The truth I’ve sought has been delivered
Yet my mind can’t work it out

Why do I live in conflicting views
Allowing my alter ego to have so much say?
How can this confusion be harnessed and dismantled
Where is the trail of breadcrumbs through this maze?

To be in disagreement with one’s self
Can be healthy to a point
But when it becomes feuding…
It must be time for change.
To be in harmony with one’s self
Seems to be the point
This is the state from which you can see
The way out of the cage

Now is the time of grand transformation
Both for the individual and the whole
Now is the eternal moment of surrendering
To the universe as it unfolds

Do I have the wisdom
To find my place in the story?
Do I have the courage
To join this divine glory?

The future is a reflection of this moment
Where the illusion of past is in-laced

The steady beating of God’s heart

Is bringing the cosmos to age.

By Fate's Decree

Whispered ardor in my dreams…
Fiery notes are played for me.
What depths shall I in the vortex fall?
Am I lost by fate's decree?
While your love, like errant sunbeams
Burst forth, enthrall.  More >

Summer

Summer's hot gestures beckon me to cool resting waters
Brings my searing brow yearning for splashes
And giggles and sand in my shoes
For leapings and laughings
Rope swings and squealing twirls
Sunburnt boys and freckled girls
Frogs beware or they will soon ensnare
Your slimy wet greeness.
Oops!
Splash!
There he goes.

Softly Keep

I picked a sweet pink rose today,
And took it in without delay.
A rose like those we once grew,
Made me feel at once brand new,
Mother, your face touched my mind,
Your smile so winsome, your eyes so kind.
I will remember those days gone by,
How we’d laugh and how we’d cry.  More >
