"Why of course the people don't want war ... But after all it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship ...Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger."
--Hermann Goering, Nazi leader, at the Nuremberg Trials after World War II More >

Afghanistan keeps being a surprising place. Here's an article about a female Afghan general, Suhaila Siddiq, who's also a medical doctor. She doesn't seem to have much respect for people in the west who according to her are making issues out of the wrong things about the situation of Afghan women.

U.N. estimates for the cost of turning Afghanistan into a functioning country again ranges between 14 and 46 billion U.S. dollars. Article
here. The European Union and Saudi Arabia and Japan, as well as the United States, are leading the campaign, and will probably be part of financing it. More >

An interesting glimpse into the culture of suicide bombers:

It is from WorldNetDaily, which is a rightwing christian news source that I'll always take with a grain of salt, but this looks useful. Kindergarten kids are taught the virtues of killing their enemies. And if you do you are a martyr, bringing great pride to your family. And, this is the kicker: there will be 72 pristinely beautiful virgins waiting for you in heaven, and you can have sex with them all day, and you will lie on fine soft carpets and receive their delights forever, just because you're a great martyr. Wow, that's juice enough to screw up the mind of any young teenage boy. More >

Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson and Usama bin Laden seem to have a whole lot in common. Take the quiz and see if you can identify statements by each of these prominent fanatics.

Many messages are being circulated,
with calls for healing, peace, compassion; with condolences and sympathy; with
information about possible causes, reasons, etc. Many emotions are being expressed.
Anger, fear, indifference, compassion, love.
I can't possibly forward all that
people have asked me to forward, but I will again include a few messages below
that I find to be of value. More >

Now is the time for unprecedented acts in human terror.
Now is the time of mass global communication broadcast to most every individual on the planet.
Now is the time of awareness of where we are in terms of human conflict.
Now is the time to stop and contemplate before we move, consider all consequences, and act for peace and resolve.
Now is the time to do things differently and change our ingrained old ways.
Now is the time to set aside our differences, console one another and recognize that we are all of one and the same.
Now is the time of a new beginning that will elevate us into a new era of consciousness; or plunge us into a bottomless abyss of darkness and onto oblivion.
I pray that, against all the impressions that surround me, we will each make the most righteous choices that consider all involved. More >

Our world was suddenly changed today, by the horrifying and tragic events in New York and Washington. What it means in the long run is impossible to say at this point.
But what is certain is that, depending on how we individually respond to this, now and in the coming time, we have the opportunity to shape the world that will emerge from this. However devastating this seemed, we have the opportunity to participate in creating a better world from this, or despite of this.
Affirm to yourself that we ARE building a better world, no matter what might point in any other direction. The vast majority of all of us on this planet want us to succeed. And there are many, many of us. Use this as motivation to commit yourself more deeply to the growing of a peaceful world for ALL of us. Don't just sit and wait for it to happen. YOUR piece of the greater puzzle is essential.
Many messages about meditations, calls for healing, rumors, news, personal stories, etc. have gone out today. I include a few selected messages and excerpts below. More >
