Imported Organic vs Local Conventional at Whole Foods

Slate Magazine points out in a recent article on Whole Foods that "Let's say you live in New York City and want to buy a pound of tomatoes in season. Say you can choose between conventionally grown New Jersey tomatoes or organic ones grown in Chile. Of course, the New Jersey tomatoes will be cheaper. They will also almost certainly be fresher, having traveled a fraction of the distance. But which is the more eco-conscious choice? In terms of energy savings, there's no contest: Just think of the fossil fuels expended getting those organic tomatoes from Chile. Which brings us to the question: [given the variables of] freshness, price, and energy conservation, should a New Yorker just instinctively choose organic, even if the produce comes from Chile?"

So pretend you live in the Big Apple. What would your choice be?

Well for one thing, how would you know that the tomatos from Chille are truly organic? They don't even have half the toxic cem laws that say, California does, as well DDT and other more toxic stuff could have been used before on other crops in that same location in the past. So for me it's a no brainer, lol. But lets say conventaly grown in New Jersy and organicly grown in California, I would spend the extra cash. Only because the nutrition level is up to 4 times higher than conventional crops, and that the land they are growing on is properly tested for contaminats. Anyway, the smart thing is to grow organicly and localy per neighborhood or township, and they could grow localy in New York inside abandon multistory buildings.

OK, WELL LET'S SAY YOU ARE AGAINST GENETICALLY MODIFIED FOOD. LET'S SAY THAT YOU ARE HAVING REACTIONS TO THESE GE FOODS (WHICH I AM). I VOTE FOR ORGANIC BECAUSE BASED ON THE INFORMATION PROVIDED, I CAN EAT SAFELY (AT LEAST FOR ME). ALSO, A NATURALIST WOULD SAY TO EAT ONLY FOODS IN SEASON, AND IF THAT IS THE CASE, MAYBE YOU SHOULD WAIT FOR THEM TO BECOME AVAILABLE WITH THE SEASON.
