- Goddess of all three worlds

This Stotram visualises the material form of Shir MahaTripurasundari. This Mother Mahashakti abides predominantly in the forest where there are many Kadamba trees. The verses give a beautiful description of her form and energy.

Kadamba vana charinim Muni dadamba Kadambinim
Nitamba jita bhu dharma Sura nitambini sevitam
Navamburuha lochanam Abhinavambuda shyamalam
Trilochana kutumbinim Tripura sundarimashraye

Kadamba vana vasinim Kanaka vallaki dharinim
Maharha mani harinim Mukah samulla sadvarunim
Daya vibhava karinim Vishada rochana charinim
Trilochana kutumbinim Tripura sundarimashraye

Kadamba vana shalaya Kuchabharolla sanmalaya
Kuchopamita shailaya Guru Krupa lasadvelaya
Maduruna Kapolaya Madhura gita vachalaya
Kaya pi Ghana nilaya kavachita vayam lilaya
Trilochana kutumbinim Tripura sandarimashraye

…….. for four more verses

The first item of note in transcribing this verse is that it appears to follow the rhyming couplet form, a style used in ancient times in the Mediterranean. This is excepting the fourth line of the 3rd verse which has five lines altogether. The same break in pattern occurs in the following five line verses.

This song is the most beautiful one I have ever had the privilege of hearing even without comprehension of the conveying language, perhaps Sanscrit. The music totally captivates the listener and hopefully the Goddess in the Forest is impressed not just with this dedication but with the continued and constantly repeated performances too, allowing the words which implore beyond implore, absolute begettment for the Nature of all Naturalness’s never to abandon Human kind Her sustenance and Glory.

The musical notation is sufficient to literally empty the heart for the feeling they pour out into the words seeminly lifting higher and higher the Whole of Existence to a Heavenly Realm. This song is meant to be Mantra Kariokee, and is the only kind practised by the log writer. The song is published on the CD entitled Mahashakti Durga (details later).

Life’s course sometimes signifies a pause for reflection and registration of the moment of achievement. The winding path suddenly opens out into a grassy plain. Loads are lifted. Cool streams stribble under the leaves on mossy banks over the smooth rocks. The vista beyond is laid out clearly for all to see. If only all eyes could witness the same such beauty there would transpire, a Simultaneity of Happiness; Gravity Defying lightness of Being would permeate the Earth World.

Sitting on a rock, musing so, on such improbables, wishing for All Kind the same arrival and destination is folly. Peace, joy and delight like tasty morsels showered in powdered sugar on a delicately and intricately patterned porcelain plate, just waiting to be taken and enjoyed. How these morsels must yearn and yearn for the Taking Over the Eons so as to replenish rather than maintain freshness and aroma in pink and yellow lustres everlasting for All Kind.

Andrew Mitchell: Commerce must be seen as an ally, not an enemy
Published: 14 May 2007

Emissions from tropical rainforests are the elephant in the living room of climate change.

Twice as much carbon is stored in the trees as in the whole of the earth's atmosphere. If that goes up in smoke, you can forget the whole caboodle, yet poor countries are burning forests like there is no tomorrow. Why do we argue over air travel when carbon from the next five years of burning rainforests will be greater than that for the entire history of aviation - and for at least the next two decades!

Yet halting those emissions remains a minor part of the agenda, despite a report in January by the consultancy gurus, McKinsey, showing forestry offered the largest and most cost-effective opportunity for global action. Clearly, forests should be first, not last in the debate - yet the same report buried forests under a mountain of technology-based solutions that developing countries can ill afford. What is going on?

When Kyoto was conceived, it seemed right that precautionary measures should focus on the industrialised nations first. Heavy hitters in the NGO world lobbied to exclude forests from Kyoto to prevent industrialised nations from buying carbon credits in, say, the Amazon or Borneo. The result has offered these no way of getting Kyoto credits from their forests other than by cutting them down and planting new ones.

Fortunately, a year ago the Coalition of Rainforest Nations demanded that it should be paid to stop cutting down forests. Brazil has now put forward its own proposals for a rainforest credit scheme.

After 30 years at the conservation frontline, I fear that history may condemn our past efforts as little more than the "charge of the Light Brigade". Now we must increase the value of rainforests to stand up to the power of rising global demand and we must harness commerce as an ally.

In January, I hosted a visit by Governor Braga of Amazonas State to London. He was asking for help to save the biggest store of natural carbon on the planet. But the Amazon offers much more than carbon. It acts like a global-scale utility, generating rain vital for Brazil's agriculture, hydropower stations and industry, while the forest canopies of the Amazon, Congo and Asia air-condition our atmosphere, buffer climatic conditions and give livelihoods to 1.6 billion.

Marketing these ecosystem services could provide the added value forests need and help dampen the effects of industrial emissions. Our global alliance of scientific organisations has set up the VivoCarbon Initiative to deepen our understanding of the vital roles played by living carbon, and today I am launching our first Report, which calls for increased incentives for sustaining rainforests, and mechanisms to pay for it.

There is nothing to be gained from allowing the follyof deforestation to continue. Those countries wise enough to have kept their forests could find themselves the owners of a new billion-dollar industry.

Andrew Mitchell is the Founder and Director, Global Canopy Programme

******** and one more article from the same: -

Deforestation: The hidden cause of global warming
In the next 24 hours, deforestation will release as much CO2 into the atmosphere as 8 million people flying from London to New York. Stopping the loggers is the fastest and cheapest solution to climate change. So why are global leaders turning a blind eye to this crisis?
By Daniel Howden
Published: 14 May 2007

The accelerating destruction of the rainforests that form a precious cooling band around the Earth's equator, is now being recognised as one of the main causes of climate change. Carbon emissions from deforestation far outstrip damage caused by planes and automobiles and factories.

The rampant slashing and burning of tropical forests is second only to the energy sector as a source of greenhouses gases according to report published today by the Oxford-based Global Canopy Programme, an alliance of leading rainforest scientists.

Figures from the GCP, summarising the latest findings from the United Nations, and building on estimates contained in the Stern Report, show deforestation accounts for up to 25 per cent of global emissions of heat-trapping gases, while transport and industry account for 14 per cent each; and aviation makes up only 3 per cent of the total.

"Tropical forests are the elephant in the living room of climate change," said Andrew Mitchell, the head of the GCP.

Scientists say one days' deforestation is equivalent to the carbon footprint of eight million people flying to New York. Reducing those catastrophic emissions can be achieved most quickly and most cheaply by halting the destruction in Brazil, Indonesia, the Congo and elsewhere.

No new technology is needed, says the GCP, just the political will and a system of enforcement and incentives that makes the trees worth more to governments and individuals standing than felled. "The focus on technological fixes for the emissions of rich nations while giving no incentive to poorer nations to stop burning the standing forest means we are putting the cart before the horse," said Mr Mitchell.

Most people think of forests only in terms of the CO2 they absorb. The rainforests of the Amazon, the Congo basin and Indonesia are thought of as the lungs of the planet. But the destruction of those forests will in the next four years alone, in the words of Sir Nicholas Stern, pump more CO2 into the atmosphere than every flight in the history of aviation to at least 2025.

Indonesia became the third-largest emitter of greenhouse gases in the world last week. Following close behind is Brazil. Neither nation has heavy industry on a comparable scale with the EU, India or Russia and yet they comfortably outstrip all other countries, except the United States and China.

What both countries do have in common is tropical forest that is being cut and burned with staggering swiftness. Smoke stacks visible from space climb into the sky above both countries, while satellite images capture similar destruction from the Congo basin, across the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Central African Republic and the Republic of Congo.

According to the latest audited figures from 2003, two billion tons of CO2 enters the atmosphere every year from deforestation. That destruction amounts to 50 million acres - or an area the size of England, Wales and Scotland felled annually.

The remaining standing forest is calculated to contain 1,000 billion tons of carbon, or double what is already in the atmosphere.

As the GCP's report concludes: "If we lose forests, we lose the fight against climate change."

Standing forest was not included in the original Kyoto protocols and stands outside the carbon markets that the report from the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) pointed to this month as the best hope for halting catastrophic warming.

The landmark Stern Report last year, and the influential McKinsey Report in January agreed that forests offer the "single largest opportunity for cost-effective and immediate reductions of carbon emissions".

International demand has driven intensive agriculture, logging and ranching that has proved an inexorable force for deforestation; conservation has been no match for commerce. The leading rainforest scientists are now calling for the immediate inclusion of standing forests in internationally regulated carbon markets that could provide cash incentives to halt this disastrous process.

Forestry experts and policy makers have been meeting in Bonn, Germany, this week to try to put deforestation on top of the agenda for the UN climate summit in Bali, Indonesia, this year. Papua New Guinea, among the world's poorest nations, last year declared it would have no choice but to continue deforestation unless it was given financial incentives to do otherwise.

Richer nations already recognise the value of uncultivated land. The EU offers €200 (£135) per hectare subsidies for "environmental services" to its farmers to leave their land unused.

And yet there is no agreement on placing a value on the vastly more valuable land in developing countries. More than 50 per cent of the life on Earth is in tropical forests, which cover less than 7 per cent of the planet's surface.

They generate the bulk of rainfall worldwide and act as a thermostat for the Earth. Forests are also home to 1.6 billion of the world's poorest people who rely on them for subsistence. However, forest experts say governments continue to pursue science fiction solutions to the coming climate catastrophe, preferring bio-fuel subsidies, carbon capture schemes and next-generation power stations.

Putting a price on the carbon these vital forests contain is the only way to slow their destruction. Hylton Philipson, a trustee of Rainforest Concern, explained: "In a world where we are witnessing a mounting clash between food security, energy security and environmental security - while there's money to be made from food and energy and no income to be derived from the standing forest, it's obvious that the forest will take the hit."

15 May 2007 @ 09:32 by nraye : Peace prattle
The major battles or warfare in my own current life are against the three major proclivities of the environment and their impact on Mind/Body system. Throughout the course of the year the types of battle vary precisely with the seasons. In the Autumn the battle is to reduce movement, but this is the very energy which manifests at this time and in its own natural balanced way is an essential component to the wheel of nature. In daily contemplation of how to climb the next rung on the ladder of health, for maybe a w eek or so the weather will remain similar. During this time the precise effects of whatever foodstuffs and healing spices and herbs used for tasty flavouring and appetite increasers will be minutely observed and make them seen and KNOWN. And impact on the entire endeavour in all its aspects.

The next battle is the Battle of the Earth characteristics thrown upon the body and mind. When all is cold and dry, and earth clumps seek moisture to warm the seeds of all growth for the coming year. Lack of will power, succumbing to cold wishing for heat, natural light foods to balance heavy earth, lots of heart glow and love, until finally reaching Eastertide.

The last battle is one of Heat, early preparations here remove all residues of heat in the physical which will assist greatly when the atmosphere becomes uncomfortable with a surfeit of this energy, bringing with it all the lack of inspiration to cope and function creatively.

The daily contemplations will be of quite different natures, often quite new experiences requiring shifts in perspective continually to incorporate in the sum total of awareness to maintaining and gaining more rungs on the Ladder of Health and Happiness.

There is one way to avoid all these continuous wars which is simply to eat meat and drink alcohold. Both these sedate the mind/body into a continuous need for more of the same meat and drink, making the mind totally oblivious to the vicissitudes of the weather and climate effects.

However, a battle is part of life, so the battle ground moves to the arms industry. Also going with this like apple pie and cream is a church which advocates martyrdom for everlasting happiness. This church is the only church that can be for a carnivorous populace, so the people get the church they deserve. I believe this church is as real at the end of the day in its offerings of guidance for the soul in the afterlife, but the dictates it must make for a meat eating congregation will by default be quite different to the guidelines and life view offered to a vegetarian group or community. For it is only the latter who can actually FEEL non violence in their very limbs, and fingers as they handle lovingly little grains of freshly cooked sweet tasting rice, and realise that to continue this precious existence, one needs a great deal of protection from the outside world to maintain this stance of Love and Peace.

In literature, this idea of Peace can move across to the meat eating public as a marvellous idea the altar of which many will adore all their lives, but never actually grasp it in their hands for keeps.

The moral of this story is that if you live in the colder climes of the world. The temptation to eat meat in order to maintain a level balance of mind, less hampered by the vagaries of the weather will be too great to overcome. If you do go vegetarian, you will need a large army to defend you anyway. Perhaps this is the reason for Judo and Karate being discovered and practiced. But anyway to all the preachers of Peace, please be aware of the limits to which you are putting your constant words here. It is unlikely to come about while the weather is variable and meat eating stays… Also it is no good doing a religion for another climate, it will be without integrity. Religions go with life styles, and it is wrong to deny meat eaters their rightful religion. You may not agree with their religion and you may not agree with their warfare tactics, but I am afraid that the two go together. It is a hard life they have chosen, and luckily it is not yours – this is a factor that should be part of any new paradigm for new existences.

Wrong doing is all relative and should not be pronounces too harshly – within their own science systems they will be able to prove their own existences and be unable to perceive outside of their systems unless they change their outlooks. This means taking up the Battles of the Seasons instead of the Battle for Power & Riches with all its societal superficialities and psychological improbabilities which are now taken quite for granted as unavoidable inheritance of human life.

Tripura Upanishad
Translated by Dr. A. G. Krishna Warrier
Published by The Theosophical Publishing House, Chennai

Om ! Speech is rooted in my thought (mind) and my thought is rooted in my speech.
Be manifest, patent, to me; be ye two, for me, the lynch-pins of the Veda.
Let not Vedic lore desert me.
With this mastered lore, I join day with night.
I shall speak what is right; I shall speak what is true.
Let that protect me; let that protect the speaker.
Let that protect me.
Let that protect the speaker, protect the speaker !
Om ! Peace ! Peace ! Peace !

1. Three cities are there, and pathways three for all.
(On the dais of Fortune) are letters a, ka, tha and others.
In them there dwells, never-ageing, ancient,
The exceeding grandeur of the gods.
2. Subject to Her whose sources are nine
Shine forth the centres nine and Yogas nine,
Nine deities and regents of the planets nine,
Gentle healing deities nine and gestures nine.
3. The One she was, the Foremost;
She was the nine, the nineteen and the twenty-nine;
The forty, she; may the radiant energies three,
As fond mother’s love, encircle me.
4. In the beginning was upblazing Light;
Gloom and Motion stretched athwart the Ageless;
The Moonlight gladness and delights; these spheres
Adorn indeed (the knowers of Brahman).
5. Of the three lines, abodes, three worlds and three spheres
With triple constituents (She is the prop).
This group of three among the sheaths is prime.
In diagram drawn with mystic words
The God of Love with Fortune’s Goddess dwells.
6. The Exhilarating and the Proud,
The Auspicious, the Lucky and the Lovely,
The Perfected, the shy, the Witty One,
The Gratified, the chosen and the Full,
The Wealthy, the Forbidden, the Graceful,
The Eloquent – (These on Consciousness do wait).
7. Attended thus the Power of Consciousness
Is drunk with the draught of Immortality;
Knowing Her and worshipping Her throne
(Her devotees) on heaven’s great vault do dwell
And enter the supreme Triple City.
8. Desire, the womb, the Digit of Desire,
The Wielder of the Thunderbolt, the Cave,
Ha sa, the Wind, the Cloud, the King of Heaven,
Yet again the Cave, sa ka la and maya –
Such is the primeval Wisdom, embracing all,
Mother of the vast universe.
9. Uttering in secret Her three basic letters –
The sixth, the seventh and the eighth –
Lauding the Lord, the theme of the Upanishads,
The Seer, the Fashioner, the Free to Will,
(Seekers) achieve the state of Immortality.
10. The Mother of the Universe sustains
Her abode – the Destroyer’s Face, the Circle of the Sun,
The core of sounds, the span of time,
The Eternal, half the lunar month;
With sixteen (She sustains the core of their abode).
11. Or, worshipping the digit of desire in its manifold forms,
Enthroned in the three cavernous homes and in symbols
Of the rounded breasts and face set in the spheres,
The man of desires gains that which he wants.
12. Dressed fish, goat’s flesh,
Cooked rice, pleasure of sex,
Who offers to the Goddess great,
Merit and success for himself achieves.
13. With (Sarasvati) fair and (Lakshmi), World’s Mother,
(Gauri), roseate, primeval Power, withdrawer of the world,
Binds with noose creatures who grasp, and tread
Attachment’s path; and swiftly smites with bow and arrows five.
14-15. The Power of Consciousness and desire’s Lord,
Lord of auspicious powers, coequals both,
Of equal prowess, in energy equal,
Grant gifts to the fortunate here.
Of the two, the un-ageing Power, the world’s womb,
With offering of knowledge pleased,
Removes the aspirant’s twofold sheath.
With mind averted from illusion’s sphere
He becomes Creator, Protector,
Withdrawer of the world;
Nay, one with Cosmic Being.
16. This is Tripura’s great Upanishad,
Imperishable, which, in glorious words
The Rig, Yajus, Saman and Atharvan
And other forms of knowledge laud.

Om, Hrim, Om, Hrim – thus ends the secret doctrine.

Om ! Peace ! Peace ! Peace !

Here ends the Tripura Upanishad, included in the Rig-Veda.

Wisdom Goddesses : Mahavidyas and the Assertion of Femininity in Indian Thought

There exists in India a group of strange Goddesses, ten in number. One of them is shown holding her own freshly severed head, which feeds on the blood flowing from her headless torso; another holds a pair of scissors while sitting triumphant atop a corpse;

===

Shodashi the Goddess who is Sixteen Years Old

Shodashi or Tripura-Sundari is believed to have taken birth to save the gods from the ravages of a mighty and wrathful demon. The tale begins when Shiva burnt down Kama, the god of love, who tried to distract Shiva from his meditation. One of Shiva's followers then scooped off Kama's ashes and formed the image of a man out of them. This man then persuades Shiva to teach him a powerful mantra. By the power of this mantra, one could gain half the might of one's adversary. But because he was generated from the ashes of Shiva's wrath he is transformed into a fierce demon. Intoxicated with his new found power he proceeded to rampage the kingdom of the gods. Apprehending defeat and humiliation, the gods all propitiate Goddess Tripura-Sundari to seek her help. The goddess appears and agrees to help them. Taking the battlefield she heaps a crushing blow on the mighty demon, thus saving the gods.

Iconographically this Goddess is shown seated on a lotus that rests on the supine body of Lord Shiva, who in turn lies on a throne whose legs are the gods Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, and Rudra.

Devi as maha TRIPURASUNDARI - this is the best way to describe our
divine mother - AFTER ALL, WHO ELSE CAN BE THE BEAUTY QUEEN OF THE
THREE WORLDS- except our divine mother.

Tripura has many meanings... as per The Kaalikaa Purana " by the will
of pradhaana, the body of Lord Shiva became triple : the upper part
became Brahma, the middle part became Vishhnu and the lower part
became Rudra." As these three pura-s (bodies) are in Lord Shiva, he
is called Tripura (three bodied) and his wife is known as Tripuraa.

In the Kaamakalaa Vilaasa ), the honored sage, Abhiyukta, mentions
that Devi created all the three forms and she is before all
(purobhava), because she is in the form of all the three (trayiimayi)
and exists even after the dissolution of the three worlds and
recreates them again.

In the Brahmanda-Purana, it is mentioned that the
GoddessTripurasundarii rules over the entire universe and She is the
supreme empress, and Brahma, VishhNu and Shiva are mere functionaries
in Her empire.

The Lalitaa Sahasranaama portrays Her as being attended by Lakshmi
and Saraswati on either side. Shankaracharya, in his
saundrayalahirii, mentions that Brahma, VishhNu and Shiva started
their cosmic processes when the Supreme Shakti knitted Her brow for a
split second.

The Devi mantra consists of three syllables, and her fifteen lettered
mantra panchadashaakshari is composed of three kuuta-s (peaks).

She resides in three naadi-s (nerve channels), namely sushhumnaa,
pingalaa, and idaa.

She is the ruler of the three Shaktis - ichchaa (will), jnana
(knowledge) and kriyaa (action).

She pervades all the three worlds - heaven, earth and the nether
world.

She is the controller of all the three bodies - sthula (gross),
suukshhma (subtle), and kaarana (causal).

She is the self which is present through the three states of
existence - jaagrat (waking), svapna (dream), and sushhupti (deep
sleep).

Though she is above all guna-s, (gunatita) She pervades the three
modes of energy- sattva (purity), rajas (mobility) and tamas
(inertia).

Love and joy are the inherent qualities of beauty. Sundarii means
belle and beauty.

SARVAANGA SUNDARI (LALITA TRISHATI)- BLISS IN A BEAUTIFUL FORM - OUR
DIVINE MOTHER SREE LALTA TRIPURA SUNDARI...

perfection, beauty and bliss - that is what MATA TRIPURA SUNDARI IS

Who thrives like a vine on the blood that falls on the battleground,
Who delights alike in the company of the auspicious Shiva,
inauspicious Shumbha and Nishumbha, and the ghoulish spirits who
feed on the battle carnage,
Victory, victory to You, Oh Slayer of the Buffalo Demon!
Victory, Daughter of the Himalayas, with beautifully braided hair!

I must sit in this quiet brilliance and feel the health coursing through.
Forgive my tardiness: the earth's vibrations have been uncommonly intense for me these days.
So grateful for this garden.

situation described in Prattle. Only a temporary stage of awareness while the physical becomes accustomed to doing what the multitude of potions did for 7 years before. Therefore a unique experience, not one that would be imposed by oneself deliberately for fun. A rope bridged crevass the physical has to negotiated to reach the next ladder rungs on other side, will take another 4 months to complete. I wanted to write more, but it has always been v difficult even to maintain a private log of this singular journey.

The beautiful additions courtesy of Vax take the breath away, unbelievable to see, supportive and truly enjoyed. Can't remember a Hindi thank you, is it p.... something?
