 Innovation Journal0 comments
19 Nov 2001 @ 16:20, by ming. Ideas, Creativity
The Public Sector Innovation Journal is a fairly dry and academic online journal from Canada. But it seems to be a good resource for what is going on in public sectors (government). Current issue is here and I noticed a good list of many news items here.  More >

 Pacifica Campaign0 comments
19 Nov 2001 @ 15:49, by ming. Broadcasting, Media
Activist groups amongst the listeners of four progressive U.S. radio stations have led an ongoing battle against the takeover of the stations by corporate or self-serving interests. The spectrum owned by the stations is worth a lot of money, and the message on the air from those stations is something that many corporate forces would prefer to extinguish. So, a long succession of people have managed to get on the board of Pacifica, with the sole purpose of either shutting them down, or profiting from the sale of the stations. See updates here: [link] The latest good news is that the whole board has now been forced to resign, and it seems like groups representing the listeners will finally get something to say.  More >

 Rowing across the Atlantic0 comments
17 Nov 2001 @ 19:12, by ming. Recreation, Fun
Starting 7th October 2001, 36 pairs of amateur rowers from 15 countries took off on a gruelling trip across the Atlantic, from Tenerife to Barbados. It is expected to take between 40 and 100 days for those who make it. There's an article in Wired News and the official site is here. Wow, looking at the real-time map the leading team is only 1 mile from Barbados this second, so it is just about over for them at least.  More >

Putin speaks of new world order0 comments
17 Nov 2001 @ 15:51, by ming. Politics
This is from Pravda:

"President Vladimir Putin of the Russian Federation spoke of a new concept of politics, based not upon fear but upon the political will of peoples.

Responding to WashingtonÂ’s unilateral bid to downsize its nuclear arsenal by two thirds, President Putin declared that Moscow would do the same, over three phases, until a minimum number necessary for national security was reached. This should be around 2,000 nuclear warheads each, creating a strategic balance.

He declared that “Our countries have stopped hating each other, which allows both of us to get rid of what was a terror for the world, namely nuclear arsenals and other weapons of mass destruction”.

Regarding the new world order, the Russian president stated that “We do not need to frighten each other any more to reach agreements. It is not piles of scrap that create security. Security is created by the political will of peoples, States and their leaders”.

The new world order, based very firmly on the Moscow-London-Washington axis, is cemented on mutual trust, collaboration and friendship, instead of the suspicion, hatred and deceit apparent during the Cold War years. "  More >

Recounts show Gore would have won1 comment
12 Nov 2001 @ 00:09, by ming. Activism
A consortium of media companies commissioned a recount of all Florida ballots in the U.S. presidential race. No matter which standard is used for the recount, Gore comes out ahead, but only with between 42 and 171 votes, depending on the method. However, ironically, if only the counties had been recounted that Gore asked for, Bush would still have won. The analysis of the effect of the several seriously misleading ballots showed that Gore lost out of many thousands of votes that were meant for him, but that were misplaced for other candidates because of the design of the ballots. Interestingly, most all of the media companies are downplaying the clear results of this study, presenting it in their headlines as if Bush still would have won, but revealing the opposite in the details of their articles, except for a couple of them who seem to add things up differently.  More >
