Saw this on CNN.com. This is really spooky, folks...
"Officials discuss how to delay Election Day"

I have always thought that this upcoming election will be the survival test for what's left of democracy in the USA. Regardless of the results, the election must be clean. If this election is not squeaky clean then we really are in deep trouble.

And now this comes out. What next?

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- U.S. officials have discussed the idea of postponing Election Day in the event of a terrorist attack on or about that day, a Homeland Security Department spokesman said Sunday.

The department has referred questions about the matter to the Department of Justice's Office of Legal Counsel, said spokesman Brian Roehrkasse, confirming a report in this week's editions of Newsweek magazine.

Newsweek said the discussions about whether the November 2 election could be postponed started with a recent letter to Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge from DeForest Soaries Jr., chairman of the U.S. Election Assistance Commission.

The commission was set up after the disputed 2000 presidential vote to help states deal with logistical problems in their elections.

Soaries, who was appointed by President Bush, is a former New Jersey secretary of state and senior pastor of the 7,000-member First Baptist Church of Lincoln Gardens in Somerset.

Newsweek reported that Soaries expressed concern that no federal agency had the authority to postpone an election and asked Ridge to ask Congress to give his commission such power.

Ridge warned Thursday that al Qaeda terrorists were planning a large-scale attack on the United States "in an effort to disrupt the democratic process." (Full story)

Ridge said he had no specific or credible information about threats to the political conventions. The four-day Democratic convention kicks off July 26 in Boston, Massachusetts, and the Republican National Convention begins August 30 in New York City.

Ridge also said the nation's color-coded terrorist threat level would remain at yellow, or elevated.

Democratic Rep. Jane Harman of California, ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee, said Sunday that she believes planning for the possibility of postponing Election Day is "excessive, based on what we know."

"Six days ago, the leadership of the House and Senate intelligence committees and leadership of the House and Senate were briefed on these so-called new threats," Harman said on CNN's "Late Edition."

"They are more chatter about old threats, which were the subject of a press conference by Attorney General [John] Ashcroft and [FBI] Director [Robert] Mueller six weeks ago.

"[Ridge] sounded more like an interior decorator talking about what more we can do under the shade of yellow," she said.

The news that such discussions have taken place raised other eyebrows on Capitol Hill as well.

"I don't think there's an argument that can be made, for the first time in our history, to delay an election," said Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California, a member of the Intelligence Committee.

"We hold elections in the middle of war, in the middle of earthquakes, in the middle of whatever it takes. The election is a statutory election. It should go ahead, on schedule, and we should not change it."

But the Republican chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, Rep. Christopher Cox of California, said on "Late Edition" that he sees Ridge's request as part of a prudent effort to plan for "doomsday scenarios."

"We don't have any intelligence to suggest that it is going to happen, but we're preparing for all of these contingencies now," Cox said.

Noting that New York election officials were able to postpone their September 11, 2001, primary election after terrorists slammed hijacked planes into the World Trade Center, Cox said "there isn't any body that has that authority to do that for federal elections."

"So what Secretary Ridge has asked the Justice Department to do is, 'Give me a legal memo, tell me what will be necessary. Do we need to go to Congress and get legislation?' "

What has Homeland Security officials worried is that terrorists could attempt to disrupt the election in the same way that train bombings in Madrid created unrest three days before the Spanish general election, Roehrkasse said.

Although there is no evidence that the bombings influenced the March 11 vote, socialist Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero unseated Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar, whose center-right government supported the U.S.-led war in Iraq.

The country's new government then pulled Spanish troops from Iraq.

You are so right, this election is so important that it will alter the course of all life forms on the planet; we cannot afford to make even one mistake this time in our choice for president. YES, I said ALL LIFE FORMS. The election may need to be postponed for just a bit but with communication the way it is today, probably not.

I'm working on a log-posting that deals with this issue. I hope to have it completed in the next day or two so that EVERYONE can review it. It is an excellent plan, in my humble opinion.

I agree with you.
This is one of the truly key moments in history - for us, for the Earth, and for all of its inhabitants.
Indeed, it would be preaching to the choir for me to say on this forum that all are connected. Within each of us the Universe resides.

Another thing is that regardless of the outcome, i tis the intent that counts. If we intend to have a clean election, and follow through with that intent, then democracy can survive. If we get bound up in technicalities and lose sight of the intent, then IMHO, we're hosed.

To me, the outcome of the election is vital in oh-so-many-ways. However, from the point of view of the system of government, it is the integrity of the process that counts, even more than the actual result. The only constraint must be that the choice be a clean one.

The Madrid bombings did NOT influence elections in Spain. The Socialists were winning even BEFORE it happened. But of course, "they" (the black hawks) will use it as an excuse to shortcircuit any democratic process in the States(what´s left of "Democracy", as Vaxen says above).
You Americans are truly squeezed between a rock and a hard place!

As long as we continue to think in terms of us and them, we will always have this condition called war. War - be it with thoughts, words, or guns - is self-perpetuating. And it will always be with us as long as we think in terms of someone else as the enemy.

I believe that we are all one. For better or for worse, this includes being one with those we hate or fear most. Not until we realize this will we truly be free of war.

The solution to war can only be to solve the injustices that cause it. The only way to truly solve these ills is to (somehow) enlighten those who perpetrate any given injustice. And the only way in the present world we can do this is by education and example. This does not necessarily mean holding hands and singing Kumbaya (though perhaps some song might be useful), but by true, honest peacemaking - the hard work of solving the problems that are leading us to global war.

This means not simply saying that the world situation is someone else's fault, and they are the problem. For, in fact, that is a form of war. Rather, it involves proactive leadership and service to the community. Whatever you do, do it the best you can, with an attitude of service to others. In doing so we will be doing more than we think to make peace - true peace of the soul.

...and I sure wish I were as good at doing this as saying this... :-)

Another thought. When I ask if "It" has arrived, what do I mean? Is it the coming of the dictatorship? Perhaps. But more than that, I see it as a sharp rise in polarity. Before the light comes the darkness. Things will get worse before they get better. But they WILL get better.

They knew full well of his atrocities and he was not summarily executed on the spot at the moment of capture!!!
They KNOW the gigs up; they're in the last gasps of terror. They're looking for a way out. They don't want to give up their life. They send in an old man who is about to expire to test the waters.
Right now, they are weighing their OPTIONS:
#1..."IF I CAN escape, how long would I live?"
#2..."IF I surrender, how long before I'm executed?"

I don't believe it was the real Saddam they had in custody. I believe he's still a pawn to be used again for whatever reason they feel will help Bush get re-elected (what a joke). But this time more people are aware of some of the things that went on and maybe this time the light will be ready to illuminate more of the dark.

Firstly to the rest of us the US election is important because like you we would like to see fairness and honesty, however I am not sure that the outcome means the end of us to be honest. Whilst American has a signifcant influence on the rest of the world with due respect it is only a matter of time before the balance starts to shift.

It was the real Saddam in my view and hell would freeze over before he was put back into power WHY? Can you imagine the backlash from England, Europe and even us down here in Asia Pacific....now that would be one hell of a stouch...the world against Bush - I would like to see that!!!

Well this discussion is interesting because just last night I was discussing a scenario with another Quantum Mechanic. I think that The USA and some other countries are poised for a martial law style take over. The election delay statement or things mentioned about delaying the elections would seem to indicate just that to me. I think any scale of terrorist attack here in the US would indeed give the current administration an adequate reason to declare Marshall law and turn our cities into jails, delay voting , and allow that power base to stay intact and continue with their version of all to some economic domination of the world. The cooperate entities controlled by the big money white power base are very scared that their level of control and direction will compromised. They lost the last election and stalled their way in, a very shaky entrance into the drivers seat. In this upcoming election they are facing defeat here the US, because they botched it up again for everybody, spent everyones non-money again in startling record amounts, they conducted a war with a hidden agenda again. It would be most convenient for them to have a terrorist attack now when they are pitted against losing the popular vote forever because after this election the popular vote will not turn out in their best interest , basic math says to me it wont. Which makes me wonder, why have not the borders been closed, all the containers searched, all the people checked if they are so worried about terrorism. The answer is they want terrorism it works fine in their scheme , If terrorism is to be ,,, they will just continue to make money and achieve even more control in the process. More control and more money. In WWII It did not take long for the people/ powers in place to control borders,check cargo and people. about two weeks. Actions described to "protect this place". What are we short of people, weapons and technology to do this? I don't think so there is another reason. It means many things to that infrastructure...money, continuance,etc... not to protect the "homeland" We have heard that word before some where. Instead of these actions ,we see the usual stuff , a new department , power structure ,new appointments , allocated funds and oh yes a "war on terrorism" . Funny that there seems to be a War attached to most republican administrations in recent history. Is that like a war on Drugs...how effective was that. Just trying to make the people think that they are doing things about the problem. But their not doing any thing about the actual problem because they make money on it. In addition to this I hear a lot of talk , things like,"The CIA is our first line of defense against terrorism" . How logical does that really sound as far as stopping anything. The CIA , they certainly have a great reputation for getting everything figured out and fixed up. Why re-structure the CIA now at the end of an administration .... another part of the plan I think sure.What effective answers :(
