Do aliens exist?
SCIENTISTS have found people who claim to have been abducted by aliens tend to believe in fantasies, suffer disturbing experiences in sleep, and 'dream' even after waking up.
Research by the American Association for the Advancement of Science found that 'abductees' believe so strongly in their experiences that they display real stress symptoms similar to traumatised battlefield veterans.
Up to four million Americans claim to have been abducted by extra-terrestrials.
Professor Richard McNally from Harvard University said people who believed they had been abducted had "pre-existing new-age beliefs - they were into bio-energetic therapies, past lives, astral projection, tarot cards and so on".
In addition, episodes of sleep paralysis and hallucinations were also common. This would lead to visits to therapists who would suggest alien abduction, which would then be accepted as a logical explanation.
Professor McNally's rational explanation of alien abduction, recounting abduction experiences under lab conditions, has been endorsed by other psychologists at the University of California.
