 A Quick Bird Report2 comments

5 Oct 2008 @ 11:04

I've been hearing a Yellow Shafted Flicker most mornings around 6 AM when I go outside for a smoke.

I've only sighted this bird twice before, once on the seacoast and once in the inner city when I lived by the railroad tracks, maybe ten years ago.

With the Yellow Shafted Flicker, I've always heard him first before I saw him. He has a very distinctive voice.

I'd like to site this one, but I have a problem. Being totally deaf in one ear, it's hard to tell from what direction a sound is coming from. I'm also worried about what the neighbors would think of me wandering around a city neighborhood peering through binoculars in the wee morning hours.  More >

"Each year since 1990, on or near the first day of winter and the longest night of the year, National Coalition for the Homeless (NCH) has sponsored National Homeless Persons' Memorial Day to bring attention to the tragedy of homelessness and to remember our homeless friends who have paid the ultimate price for our nation's failure to end homelessness.  More >

Do you hear that whistle down the line?

I figure that its engine number forty-nine
Shes the only one that'll sound that way
On the atchison, topeka, and the santa fe

See the old smoke risin round the bend
I reckon that she knows shes gonna meet a friend
Folks around these parts get the time of day
From the atchison, topeka, and the santa fe

Here she comes
Whoo hoo hoo hoo hoo
Hey jim, you'd better get the rig
Whoo hoo hoo hoo hoo
Shes got a list of passengers thats pretty big

And theyll all want lifts to browns hotel
cause of lots of them been travelin for quite a spell
All the way from philadelphia
On the atchison, topeka, and the santa fe  More >
