Quote of the day:

“Follow your bliss and the universe will open doors for you where there were only walls”
-Joseph Campbell

More Joseph Campbell quotes:

It is by going down into the abyss that we recover the treasures of life. Where you stumble, there lies your treasure.
-Joseph Campbell

Life is without meaning. You bring the meaning to it. The meaning of life is whatever you ascribe it to be. Being alive is the meaning.
-Joseph Campbell

Opportunities to find deeper powers within ourselves come when life seems most challenging.
-Joseph Campbell

The big question is whether you are going to be able to say a hearty yes to your adventure.
-Joseph Campbell

The goal of life is to make your heartbeat match the beat of the universe, to match your nature with Nature.
-Joseph Campbell

The privilege of a lifetime is being who you are.
-Joseph Campbell

I have found that you have only to take that one step toward the gods, and they will then take ten steps toward you. That step, the heroic first step of the journey, is out of, or over the edge of your boundaries, and it often must be taken before you know that you will.
-Joseph Campbell

"Wisdom and foolishness are practically the same. Both are indifferent to the opinions of the world"
-Joseph Campbell

Nietzche was the one who did the job for me. At a certain moment in his life, the idea came to him of what he called "the love of your fate." Whatever your fate is, whatever the hell happens, you say, "This is what I need." It may look like a wreck, but go at it as though it were an opportunity, a challenge. If you bring love to that moment — not discouragement — you will find the strength is there. Any disaster you can survive is an improvement in your character, your stature, and your life. What a privilege! This is when the spontaneity of your own nature will have a chance to flow.
-Joseph Campbell

Then when looking back at your life, you will see that the moments which seemed to be great failures followed by wreckage were the incidents that shaped the life you have now. You'll see that this is really true. Nothing can happen to you that is not positive. Even though it looks and feels at the moment like a negative crisis, it is not. The crisis throws you back, and when you are required to exhibit strength, it comes.
-Joseph Campbell

We must be willing to get rid of the life we've planned, so as to have the life that is waiting for us. The old skin has to be shed before the new one can come.
-Joseph Campbell

"We must be willing to get rid of the life we've planned, so as to have the life that is waiting for us. The old skin has to be shed before the new one can come".

In the Epic of Gilgamesh, Gilgamesh is seeking everlasting life, and is told of a plant that will deliver it, by the guy who survived the great flood. It is deep under water, so Gilgamesh ties stones to his feet and jumps in. He sinks all the way down, sees the plant, and grabs it. The thorns on it shred his hands badly, but he cuts the stones from his feet and rises back to the boat.

Once on land, the plant's smell attracts a snake, which steals the plant from Gilgamesh.
And so, that's why snakes have the power of renewal, by shedding their skins periodically.

'Hero With A Thousand Faces' is worth reading. Glad you're on your way to wherever you're going!! ;)

I just read, and am now working on Myths to live by, which is also good. The theme being that since mankind has shifted his beliefs more to science and away from living for the group, and instead, more toward living for the individual, mankind has become impoverished of rites of passage, and myths that we can believe in. Each chapter seems to be a whole seperate essay, written at different times.

3 Aug 2007 @ 11:00 by DIMschool @84.195.249.137 : Your future...
If you look at your past, you'll know your future. What you sow you will reap. What do you expect otherwise? You cannot sow sunflower seeds and expect big oaks. If you want to change the future, you have to plant new seeds today... And do NOT give away your hopes and beliefs in the hands of any type of 'fortune teller'! Why not?... Because this is the PROOF that you DO NOT belief in the seeds you planted today... So, before sowing: start believing in yourSELF! Good luck!

Strange: "Life is without meaning. You bring the meaning to it. The meaning of life is whatever you ascribe it to be. Being alive is the meaning."
-Joseph Campbell -

Life is without meaning... OK, I can agree with that (however, my definition of 'the meaning of life' is very different to this one).
Being alive is the meaning - Oops, isn't this a contradiction in one and the same sentence?...

With very best regards from Belgium!
