With so many stars in the night sky, at least if you live beyond the heavy light pollution that I live under, it helps to have some markers with which to get your bearings. One of the most noticeable of the two constellations up there, are the Orion - Canus Major combination. Orion the hunter, wit...

I think that Betelgeuse's beauty alone should give it it's alpha designation, but I guess that's not how it works in the universe of astronomy. What gives it that soft pink colour and its magnitudinal fluctuation is the fact that it is a Red Giant. A red giant is in fact, a star that is dieing, or to be more subtle, (for even stars may have feelings), in a late phase of stellar evolution. And the possibility is quite real, that Betelgeuse is nearing the end of even this phase of its evolution.

Although its fluctuations in magnitude have been noticed before in history, it should be noted that Betelgeuse is now in its 15th year of shrinkage in brightness. This collapse may be signaling the imminent next phase in stellar evolution, that of the Super Nova.

When a star the size of this one goes supernova, it can be expected to outshine the whole Milky Way Galaxy for a few weeks until it fades from view, and be brighter in magnitude to earthly observers than even our moon.

Now here's the kicker.

Betelgeuse may have already gone supernova. You see, this magnificent star is located approximately 640 light-years from the Earth, which means that whatever happens to Betelgeuse, we do not see it happen until 640 years after the fact.

Nobody knows how to exactly (and in astronomy, that's a fairly relative term, time wise) calculate when a Red Dwarf goes SuperNova.

So if you awaken some night, any night, maybe tonight, to a strong pinkish orange light, lighting up the outside through your bedroom window, it may be Betelgeuse in her death throes. If it happens in our lifetimes, it will be the talk of the millenium, a show better than all of the TV, Movies, Internet, or natural experiences you've ever had.

If it happens in your lifetime (or is that 650 years before your lifetime?), stay up and watch it, for the few weeks that it lasts, and enjoy the show, because afterward, that pinkish orange star won't be there for us anymore to see, and our Universe will be just a little less wondrous without it.

Betelgeuse

Orion

Rigel

Sirius

Red Giants

SuperNova
