I have left a comment on the sprint in the Chandler {link:http://wiki.osafoundation.org/twiki/bin/view/Jungle/PyconSprintSummary|wiki}. The Chandler repository design in outline is not too hard, but the implementation is not consistent at this point, and there are details of the design that are confusing. Still, I have become a good deal more familiar with Python and Chandler, and I am still game to use Chandler as a front end for InterMix. The experience has been positive due to the good nature and intelligence of the Chandler people and the other sprinters. More later after the conference. (:-) 24 Mar 2004 @ 18:21 by Roger Eaton @161.253.42.5 : meeting with Mitch Kapor Well, I did get a few minutes with Mitch, but alas it was clear throughout the interview that InterMix will have to do without any direct help from {link:http://o11n.org|OSAF}. No surprise there, tho I have to admit I had my hopes. Basically, InterMix is in the wrong category to be funded by OSAF -- it is a potential Chandler application, and as such has to make its own way. OSAF provides Chandler and the rest of the world provides Chandler applications. Mitch's keynote address to the PyCON convention was quite good. He expressed optimism that freely contributed open source code will win over proprietary code, the chief obstacle being the pernicious effects of software patenting. Why will open source win? Because the open source community has developed a cooperative ethos, where groups of coders use the results of others work, and also take pains to make a return to the community. As an example, Chandler has hired a wxPython coder to strengthen weak areas of the wxPython gui code for the mac. I have a feeling that OSAF will also be providing some help towards making Python containable in an adjustable sandbox, something like java applets, which are not allowed to hit the hard drive. One revelation is that Mitch Kapor once worked as a stand up, and has very good comic timing. He got a good laugh when he said he first met Richard Stallman in Cambridge -- when Stallman was picketing him! The next step is to design the module layout and begin coding. The sprint has given me the quick start I was counting on, so all in all the trip is still a success. I attended the Chandler sprint ahead of the conference and we were in the same room with the core sprint people, so I was privileged to overhear many conversations about Python and its directions. It is not the particulars so much as the process that interested me -- everyone who needed to speak had a say, and this was the case for all the sprints. True leadership by merit! The keynote by Mitch Kapor was funny and pointed as well. He said he first met Richard Stallman of GPL fame in the 1980's when they lived within a block of each other in Cambridge, MA, and ...comic pause... "he was picketing me!" That did get a good laugh. His points, as I recall were 1) open source will win because of its cooperative nature and 2) speed and security are important for Python and 3) the SCO patent attack against Linux is not the end of this kind of attack on open source -- we need to get ready for it to go critical and we need to fight hard if we are going to get through. For Chandler, he said he and OSAF - Open Source Applications Foundation -- would fight if sued on patents. These software patents are 99.9 percent unworthy either because of prior art or because they do not have the creative spark that makes them patentable, so it is feasible to win in the courts, just expensive. The keynote by Guido van Rossum was a bit disappointing, I thought. Guido is too much taken over by his day job and paying for his Silicon Valley house to be able to put the kind of effort into Python that he has in the past. The core group is mighty smart, for sure, but the structure is that Guido has to give his yea or nay and he doesn't have time to look into the more difficult matters, so some things just don't happen. He said that he was not convinced that the "capabilities" approach to making eval code work in a sandbox would work, or that if it did, that it would change the nature of Python too radically. So in this he seems opposed to Kapor, who was calling for exactly making Python be useful over the wire for foreign code, like java applets. The core people thought "capabilities" could work, but said Guido is against any kind of security type stuff. So something interesting is happening there on this. A story to watch. I liked the Starkiller talk by Michael Salib -- it was worth the price of admission. Faster than a speeding bullet, yet somehow one could understand everything -- see http://www.sauria.com/~twl/conferences/pycon2004/20040324/Starkiller.txt for some notes on the talk. Starkiller is speed by replacing function calls with static function calls according to the actual types that are fed to the function. For instance, if a calculation is fed either integers or floats in the course of a program, then two calculations, one for integers and one for floats can be substituted and they will both be fast. Guido implied that some of Starkiller could be incorporated. Starkiller was followed by PyPy -- which is python written in python -- they said, now we show you how to go slow! The idea, as I grasped it, was that PyPy writes Python in a subset of Python, so it makes it more feasible to Pyrex it, but the writeup suggests I have missed the most of it: see http://codespeak.net/pypy/index.cgi?doc/funding/B1.0 -- anyway - speed increases are coming. Altogether it was an education -- here I am a Python beginner and almost 60, set down amidst these brains, more powerful to begin with and younger and more nimble by far. That is the advance I wanted from the attending the sprints and the conference. I am looking for someone good who might be my (paid of course) tutor. Things like understanding cvs, how to extend Python in C, licensing issues, how to use distutils, how to structure a large project, which voh certainly will be.
