Dear HBO,
For what it's worth, here are my thoughts having just finished watching your documentary "Death in Gaza."
To me, the propaganda element of the film depends on its not showing the Israeli side, Israeli lives, fears and sufferings, the historical context, etc.
But the incitement in the Palestinian Arab school, the Palestinian Arab culture of martyrdom, the Palestinian Arab contempt for Jews, etc. come through clearly enough despite that.
Two Palestinian Arab boys are shown preparing crude grenades packing them with explosives. One boy serves as look out and helper for the militants. (Using children like this is considered a war crime under international law.) There are rallys calling for shahids and glorifying death. By the way, when you showed Gazan Muslims at prayer, why didn't you include at least part of the sermon, where usually these days the mullah will likely be calling for death to all the Jewish dogs and pigs? Well, I guess that would somewhat reduce the dignity of the protagonists, wouldn't it? More >

in a PBS-sponsored debate in July 2003 on "Islam and Democracy," Daniel Pipes wrote something worth repeating and remembering:
"Muslims today groan under dictatorships, but one day could be model democrats. Further, Islam can be interpreted many ways, and there is nothing about it that immutably contradicts democracy." More >

A recent article, 'What is a neo-conservative anyway?" by Jim Lobe seems to me like a good piece in many ways, although it represents a caricature.
Remove the absolutism with which Lobe broad-brushes 'neo-conservatives'--e.g. , "all negotiation with opponents is appeasement," "all attempts at making peace are utopian and unrealistic," "the moral goodness of U.S. government policy is unquestionable"-- and Lobe might classify me as a neo-conservative. In Hatred’s Kingdom, Dore Gold, a former Israeli ambassador to the U.N., presents a sobering look at one of the main state powers behind the current Islamist terror wave in the U.S., Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East. I highly recommend this book.
Apologists for the Saudis may be quick to jump at Gold’s Israeli background, but he firmly grounds his narrative in historical fact. As Gold carefully points out, the problem is not Islam per se but a narrow, fanatical version of it, Wahabism, born in Arabia in the 18th Century. More >
