Our new kitten, Avivi (pronounced "uh-vee-vee"). Her name, a Hebrew word, signifies "springlike" or "dewy."

She springs and bounces like Pepe Lepeuw and already seems like a formidable leaper and jumper. What energy! For a 2 1/2 pound ball of fur she sure can make a loud meow and put up a vicious fight when we try to clip her nails. No declawing for her—but we do want to do what we can to save our furniture!

Our friend Maura saved its mother, an 8-month old black cat who was left to roam on the property of a man who fed her but somehow couldn’t bother to have her neutered (OY!). As you can see from the picture, Avivi’s daddy may have been that orange-colored tom who roamed the neighborhood and ‘liked them young.’. As Bob Barker says, "Spay and neuter your pets, folks." It’s kind to animals.

Maura helped blackie birth 4 beautiful and feisty sisters. Their first 8 weeks in a hallway and bathroom of Maura’s apartment—kitty bliss. The black cat, almost a kitten herself, turned out to be an excellent mother. The sisters played together and thrived under Maura’s loving. Two of them—Avivi and Ferret—now have homes.

Avivi roams inside and is beginning to discover the beautiful views from our garden apartment. More adventures await.

I'm a wee bit of an animal lover myself !
Cats just can't resist sinking their claws into a rough surface can they - which is why a scratching post could be the salvation of your household goods- and maybe even of the cat eh !
Anyway – make sure that the post is tall enough for the cat to reach up as he scratches – let him have a good stretch while he’s at it !. It's got to be absolutely stable. If it rocks, he'll lose his confidence and not use it anymore.
Whatever kind of post you choose, don't get rid of it when it starts looking tatty. If it looks tatty, that's because he's using it and it has his scent- and hopefully he’ll be the only one able to ‘smell’ it eh ! LOL!
Try putting the post in the middle of wherever the action is - like right next to the sofa, if theres enough room, or wherever it is that your cat's been doing his scratching- ‘cos this means the cat likes this space. Once he starts using it you can move it -a few inches at a time- a wee bit further away – or at least far enough until you’re not tripping over it all the time !
Remove the odor from where he was already scratching - this is important because -one of the reasons of scratching is to deposit a familiar scent; it's your cat's way of marking his territory. Removing his scent may help prevent him from scratching there in the future. (fingers crossed !)
What you can also try doing is apply citrus smelling odors – they hate oranges and lemons ‘n stuff like that - maybe you can hide some dried orange peel under a cushion or rub some scented oil into the furniture.
I think there exists some kind of repellent too – but I don’t know if they work all that well .
Anyway – good luck – the cat too ! (she’s very lovely!)

Aviva is very delicate and sweet looking. Enjoy!
I'm glad to hear that spaying and neutering is being urged, but I want to add the importance of keeping cats indoors. Cats are a real menace to song birds and other urban and suburban wildlife. ...and cats are happy inside as long as they have room to roam and pounce.

Enjoy blogging!

I really aupalpd those parents who encourage bilingual learning. I think you're right it must be loads for work but how beneficial if you can follow through with it. .-= Tina@RideOnToysb4s last blog ..Childrens Ride on Toys Help Kids Reach Important Developmental Milestones =-. Reply
