Islamists--the fundamentalist Muslim believers who interpret their religion as a political creed for creating one world under Allah--currently constitute the most widespread and serious movement for religion-based, totalitarian world domination.
Islamists dream of an ummah (Muslim world community) joined under a caliph (Muslim political-religious leader) and ruled by sharia (Islamic law as interpreted by mullahs and ayatollas). By no means fully united, Islamists divide on--among other things--who is to be the great leader, who is to interpret the law, and the use of violence to achieve their objectives.
One nation under the Islamist Allah (the Taliban's Afghanistan) didn't work--even for a predominantly Muslim country. One world under Allah won't work either. Despite this, the cost for the rest of us in defending ourselves against radical fundamentalist Islamism will be high.
Unfortunately, Islamists represent a significant percentage of Muslims. Although they do not represent all Muslims, they have many fellow-travelers. Moderate Muslims, who may want democracy and may support separation of mosque and state, will have to gain much greater influence in the Muslim world and will need all the help they can get from non-Muslims to render Islamist coercion insignificant as a threat to world peace.
One thing seems clear, we will not help moderate Muslims one bit by assuming that we can negotiate with those who wish to destroy us. If someone comes to kill me, the sensible thing is to kill him first. Showing kindness to the cruel just results in cruelty to the kind.
