Dare To Inquire: Jimmy Carter and Middle East Peace

Today's New York Times (print edition) carries a story about the virtual 'peace' agreement signed by Israeli leftists and Palestinians in Geneva, Switzerland.

The signing was attended by many of the 'usual suspects' including former U.S. president Jimmy Carter, who in an interview "criticized both leaders in the region for not moving forward to make peace and the Bush administration for what he called its 'bias' toward Israel. He speculated that history might have been different if he had been re-elected president in 1980."

" 'Had I been elected to a second term, with the prestige and authority and influence and reputation I had in the region, we could have moved to a final solution,' he said."

Jimmy Carter using his influence and reputation to promote "a final solution" for the Jewish state. Hmmm? Probably more truth there than that innocent do-gooder could imagine. I had to laugh reading that. Either that or tear out what's left of my hair.

I understand that as president, Carter had been asked by some French officials about the possibility of detaining Ayatollah Khoumeini while the Ayatollah still was on French soil. Khoumeini was at that time preparing his Islamist takeover of Iran. Carter was said to have replied that they couldn't do that because the Ayatollah was a religious man.

Who knows--if Carter had gotten reelected, maybe we'd still have the Soviet Union.
