Dare To Inquire: What 'Is' The True Islam?
What 'Is' The True Islam?10 comments

in a PBS-sponsored debate in July 2003 on "Islam and Democracy," Daniel Pipes wrote something worth repeating and remembering:

"Muslims today groan under dictatorships, but one day could be model democrats. Further, Islam can be interpreted many ways, and there is nothing about it that immutably contradicts democracy."

My take on that? I agree.

Although it has ancient roots, Islamism, the currently prevailing, highly vocal, totalitarian version of Islam--which has become such a threat to both non-Muslims and Muslims--is not the only version of belief possible within Islam.

In the future, humanistic forms of Islam and other religious--and non-religious--viewpoints may grow in the Muslim world.

But let's face it. Currently, even those called "Muslim moderates" seem anything but that to me. From personal conversations I have had with 'moderate' Muslim aquaintances, I have reluctantly concluded that fundamentalism appears the rule, not the exception, even in the U.S.

However, quite importantly, there are differences in degree of fundamentalism--thank goodness. (Only a small percentage, those in the fanatical extreme, go in for bombing and killing the infidels--which can include other Muslims.)

When will the Muslim world embrace democracy in deed, not just word? When will more than just a handful of Muslims find the courage to question the old dogmas and challenge the rampant antisemitism, anti-americanism, and culture of blame and victimhood in their ranks?

Perhaps when more Muslims appreciate the wisdom of Confucius who said "It is not truth that makes man great, but man that makes truth great." It is not Islam that will make Muslims great, but Muslims that will make Islam great, and peaceful, and tolerant.

I'm waiting.

6 Feb 2004 @ 22:57 by b : A cataclysmic event
to coalesce Muslim awareness that they have a different history of the same events then the rest of the world. That we all live here on this planet which has been in existence for three billion years. The three Abrahamic religions share the same God. Islam and Christianity hold out exclusive passage to God, Judaism: God is One. Science holds out the Zero Point Field, God who is everywhere in everything in this universe. Fundamentalists can't change. They are to the right of conservatives who resist change. Democracy is based upon the freedom of an individual who votes for representation in a government or institution. Fundamental Christianity exists in democracies because of rule of law. There is no rule of law to protect religion in Muslim countries only Islam, Shiara law. Arabs have been the proselytizers of Islam. Arabs who control the dessimination of Islamic fundementals as are today expressed in Wahabism from Mecca, the centre of Islam. Mecca, in Arabia that is today controlled by the Saudi family. For Arabs to see the world clearly they must see that God is for everyone who can communicate with God. That there does not have to be a rule of how to communicate to God. That there are humans on this world that don't believe that there is God or don't know and don't want to know. That is their right too. A stunning event to change civilization.

7 Feb 2004 @ 12:04 by bkodish : Aye, bbee
stunning indeed.

8 Feb 2004 @ 19:43 by b : Thanks
I think a key here is asocciative history. A world view of a common calender and common era hisotry. Proper time zones in global locales would be a start. Asertive history as Islam embraces is self destructive. Out of tune, not in harmony with the rest of the world.

9 Feb 2004 @ 00:51 by vaxen : when...
will you, mr kodish, learn the difference betweent 'democracy' as 'popular form of government' and 'democracy' the 'political philosophy?' the founders of this 'republic,' called 'the united states of america,' were dead set against the establishment of a 'democracy!' know why? maybe you could gain some insight from karl marks on that one?

9 Feb 2004 @ 05:41 by jstarrs : As Groucho Marks said...
..."I started with nothing & finished in misery"

9 Feb 2004 @ 13:16 by Bruce Kodish @24.205.69.22 : Dear Vaxen,
Please elaborate on " the difference betweent 'democracy' as 'popular form of government' and 'democracy' the 'political philosophy" as you understand it . What were the founders of this 'republic,' called 'the united states of america,' dead set against? What insights have you gained from Karl Marx?
I'd like to understand what you're talking about.

9 Feb 2004 @ 13:37 by b : and tell us Vaxen
What democracy has to do with the real Islam? That is what this thread is about.

You actually make it seem so easy with your presentation but I find this topic to be really something which I think I would never understand. It seems too complicated and very broad for me. I am looking forward for your next post, I will try to get the hang of it!
