If web time is short and I only can look at one thing, I almost invariably choose to read Richard Landes' The Augean Stables

The title refers to one of the labors of Hercules, cleaning out the accumulated pile of dung in the so-named stables that was smelling up the entire kingdom.


I recommend The Augean Stables
to anyone who is interested in a self-challanging investigation of some widely-assumed and deeply-held misconceptions about the nature of the Arab-Israeli conflict and other problems of the present world. Indeed, it turns out that the misconceptions addressed by Landes constitute a major source of the problems.
These misconceptions are the dung that Landes is working to help remove. A Herculean task--but necessary.

Hints for self-challengers:
1. Everyone is ultimately responsible for cleaning out his or her own 'stable'.
2. If you've lived in the 'stable' long enough, you probably can't smell the s..t.

A good point Ralph, but I believe people are going to have a hard time defending prejudice when the possibility of answering certain kinds of questions with much greater precision increases
