*New addition added at the bottom of the post*.

I understand that this is an uncomfortable subject for many, but can I ask you to please read these quotes - thank you so much.

We, humankind are just one of the many species on this beautiful planet of ours.

The Earth is simply teeming with life in all forms.

These quotes are a voice for those that can not speak

The basis of all animal rights should be the Golden Rule: we should treat them as we would wish them to treat us, were any other species in our dominant position.
- Christine Stevens

"If a group of beings from another planet were to land on Earth - beings who considered themselves as superior to you as you feel yourself to be to other animals - would you concede them the rights over you that you assume over other animals?"
- George Bernard Shaw

The life spark in my eyes is in no way different than the life spark in the eyes of any other sentient being. ~Michael Stepaniak

To my mind, the life of a lamb is no less precious than that of a human being. The more helpless the creature, the more that it is entitled to protection by man from the cruelty of man.
- Mohandas Gandhi

The animals of the world exist for their own reasons. They were not made for humans any more than black people were made for white, or women created for men.
~Alice Walker

"Anyone who has accustomed himself to regard the life of any living creature as worthless is in danger of arriving also at the idea of worthless human lives."
- Albert Schweitzer

Life is life - whether in a cat, or dog or man. There is no difference there between a cat or a man. The idea of difference is a human conception for man's own advantage.
- Sri Aurobindo

There can be no justification for causing suffering to animals simply to serve man's pleasure or simply to enhance man's lifestyle."
- The Dean of York

*Addition*-This is a subject that has bothered me for 25 years, one I have learned to internalise and keep to myself as it upsets and makes people mad. I live my own life doing what I feel I have to do and don't mention the subject anymore. But the other day I saw two things that rekindled that old sense of hurt and outrage, and felt I was turning a blind eye to something I cared deeply about. I don't/can't see other creatures in a dispassionate way, I see them and I see life.

We were driving along a picturesque English lane and looking out over the sunlit green fields at the sheep and the tiny new born lambs, snuggled up to their mothers, they were beautiful and I smiled and was glad the sun was shining and we hadn't had snow or frost like previous years. Then I noticed on this wonderful, innocent new life, a scrawled graffitti of numbers/marks in bright blue on its back, a new life defaced. Marked as a commodity, and I felt the injustice.

Later I watched a tv programme on a 'watch again player' on the net, and saw someone in a fishing boat holding up a crab and marvelling how old it was to have got that big, I could see it moving, feel its life. Then a linguistine, another one that was huge, alive, plucked from its home, again he marvelled at its age and size, and while he was talking I watched it, struggling. Then he turned it over and stuck a knife in it and cut it down the middle, the legs kept moving for a few seconds then stillness. I felt the shock of a life being taken, the people on the programme discussed the garnish. I turned off as they were about to boil the lobster and crab alive.

All of a sudden, I felt I had to say what I believe, I don't want to make people uncomfortable, but I do want people to actually 'see' what is happening, if it makes a difference to one person, one animal, then it is worth speaking out - thanks for listening.

Wow powerful image
when you put it that way it really makes you think
Natures does now have rights in the Euadorian constitution
It does complicate things though a bit because is a banana a person as well
and if so what can one eat in good conscience?
anyway good topic for debate and deliberation
do carry on... with the powerful message
we must be conscious and considerate consumers if we are to be consumers at all

6 Apr 2009 @ 08:03 by susannahbe : Hi ed
Thanks very much for reading and commenting, it is much appreciated.

Yes, it is awkward I know, where do you stop on the "scale of life" everything lives. There are those of course that only eat what is freely given, fruit, berries, nuts, things that nature gives to spread it seeds. Things you harvest without killing the plant etc. etc.

It comes down to doing your best. It the UK there have been a lot of tv programmes, showing people raising and killing (or having them killed) their own animals, to bring to light what is really going on, rather than a sanitised 'buying from the supermarket'. In a way, if Animals are going to be killed for food the move toward keeping animals in a natural environment, well cared for etc. is a step forward from the factory farmed 'commodities'.

If people have to kill an animal to survive and do it respectfully, that must be better than the sanitised prepackaged 'meat' that people buy and don't want to realise what is behind their dinner.

When it comes down to it though, for me, what gives me the right to take the life of another earth inhabitant to satisfy my tastebuds, I understand that we have to eat and we must all do what our conscience allows.

I just think that it is not being seen that we as a species use other beautiful innocent creatures as commodities, what gives us the right.

Sorry, about the rant, I have added something in the main post to try and explain what started all this up in me again.

Thanks for listening ed and I hope you are well - x

10 Apr 2009 @ 17:38 by celestial : Animal Cannibals:
I believe any mammal eating another mammal is tantamount to cannibalism. As far as eating other life forms, I have not formed an opinion on that...yet.

Powerful picture and an excellent article with a great host of quotes!

It is a powerful picture isn't it.

Thanks very much for reading and for your comment.

12 Apr 2009 @ 12:45 by bimbo : oh my goodness
a subject I often try to ignore !! *ouch*

Went fishing once years ago in warm waters .. if you've ever seen an octupus fight for it's life against a man armed with a knife !!
Terrifying and Heart breaking !
Nuff said !

I believe I object to the way we treat animals and not exactly that we eat them.
If we treated the animals with respect acknowledging their 'gift' of life........

I read this article a long time ago - [link]

I'll probably stay veggie for the next couple of weeks - but even veggies are alive !

Thanks for posting this.

12 Apr 2009 @ 15:01 by susannahbe : Hi Bimbo
I guess I don't see what gives humans the right to 'use' animals.

As the quote says - The animals of the world exist for their own reasons. They were not made for humans any more than black people were made for white, or women created for men.
~Alice Walker

I suppose in the days of Slavery some people were concerned that Slaves were kept well, while others questioned 'Slavery'.

Thanks for commenting,

12 Apr 2009 @ 18:37 by bimbo : Of course you are quite right

and I'm glad to be going back to fresh fruit and veggies !!((smile))

Here's what Osho has to say .. [link]

12 Apr 2009 @ 21:28 by susannahbe : Thanks
for the Osho link :-)

12 Apr 2009 @ 22:42 by istvan : Dear Ma Binbo
I too thank you for linking Osho's discourse. It would be well to post more of his discourses for He always spoke to and from deep intelligence, that many of us hopefully reach some day.
So true: "You can eat meat and you can meditate. You can eat meat and you can love, it has nothing to do with love either. But you will be showing one thing about yourself: that you are very crude, that you are very primitive, uncultured, uncivilized, that you don't have any sense how life should be."
There was a U-Tube video of OSHO posted not long ago and the only conclusion people rieched, according to comments, that "he newer blinks". That shows the mentality of NCN.
Also contemplating on the practice of the Jewish "KOSHER". At least the animals receive a priests blessing. Might be a little more advanced killing. The slaughter at Gaza recently also received many Rabbi's blessings. Perhaps evolution at work.

Love&veggies. AnandIsvan

12 Apr 2009 @ 22:51 by susannahbe : Istvan
thanks for the comment Istvan, I too like Osho's words.

You comment about 'the mentality on NCN' as though it is something out side of us/you.

Everyone who visits here and takes part in whatever form is contributing - we are ALL part of 'the mentality of NCN'.
