Humanity already possesses the fundamental scientific, technical, and industrial know-how to solve the carbon and climate problems for the next half century.

The finding counters the common argument that a major new technology needs to be developed before greenhouse gasses can be controlled or that we need to do research for a long time before getting started.

Stephen Pacala and Robert Socolow’s analysis, published, more than two years ago already, in the Aug. 13, 2004 issue of Science Vol. 305. no. 5686, identifies 15 technologies that are ripe for large-scale use and showed that each could solve a significant portion of the problem.

A lot of these ideas can't be done alone, or carried out just by themselves, and I guess that's the point. There's no simple solution, and the problem needs to (and can) be addressed at all levels---individual, industrial, and governmental. Scientists must, and will, continue researching alternative sources of energy but it is already within humanity's reach to act in the here and now.

It is more than that ... there has to be a change of paradigm
not more physical growth but moral and character growth...
or maybe a devolution or revival of the morals and characters once possessed but squandered and corrupted by power...
It is the technology in a way that has corrupted the character and morals.

some of the hutterites here in alberta clued into that a few years ago and now have got the other farmers in the area oggling them...
but this stuff could be found in the whole earth catoluges of the seventies...
it more than a technical problem though.... it is a mind or spirit shift...
or from mere consumption to conscious and responsible consumption...
I gave up my car for 5 years and walked or bused everywhere until my health and age got the better of me.

Now this is a better approach than to say mere global warming

18 Mar 2007 @ 23:04 by jmarc : it's also a matter of economics
what is technologically feasable isn't always economically feasable. Giving over large parcels of farmland for ethonol production, for example may have other unforseen consequences.
