The question perhaps is delicate then how much at any given time should the piece of pie be. To some art is a necessity as beauty and form gives life its meaning. To exist without nature and beauty would be not to exist at all for many. Art and beauty though are of a more subjective quality than perhaps the other things the government patronizes hence the debate. And true at one point most of the fine art and crafts and architecture where subsidized by the Government and Churches in Europe so it has more history and expertize in this matter. Personally some of the more modern schools of art beg the question what is art more than other traditional modes and leave me cold in terms of appreciation myself. Take the case of a student who attempted to defecate and call it art. He was promptly referred for counseling. and no it wasn't Frank Zappa. At any rate, I think thus the Government has the mandate to support its community members at times and so to some degree or other should support the creative class as it does the others. Training gained in the arts after all has and employs the application of "creativeness" that can easily or maybe not always but be transferred to other more objective fields. As well the therapeutic and social aspect of the arts or some of them can and should not be overlooked such as the value of music and art therapy. Beauty thus may be in the eye of the beholder but beauty is a necessity as life without beauty and meaning is not life at all but mere existence. Dr Carl Jung did counter Freud's argument of "Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar" with this insight, "As far as we can discern, the sole purpose of human existence is to kindle a light (of meaning) in the darkness of mere being." 1 Feb 2010 @ 15:58 by swanny @70.65.13.68 : Architecture And actually if you follow Louis Sullivan's "form follows function" philosophy and consider the function of much of modern art then the building is in keeping to that tradition. It was not after all "form follows practicality" so we I guess have to cut some slack to artists and architects in an age of possible indulgence and narcissism and endless possibilities. Can we afford it perhaps is the other question and can we afford the endless maintainable costs of thus is an other. Is it organic perhaps sustainable not really. 4 Feb 2010 @ 02:31 by swanny @70.65.11.89 : Recent Tour Video of recent tour link = [link] swanny 4 Feb 2010 @ 10:53 by susannahbe : Thanks Thanks for the tour - I enjoyed that! What was your feeling about it after visiting? Hope all is well with you sir :-) Happy Thursday to you x 4 Feb 2010 @ 11:26 by swanny @70.65.11.89 : Feeling Hi sus my feeling after the visit? its a bit odd I'm not sure I liked it but I'm not sure I didn't like it either it seems to be some what ambivalent it had good aspects and then it had questionable aspects. I wondered at times whether it was a building made into sculpture or a sculpture made into a building. As far as the practicality of it as a building, it seems somewhat unworkable as to the constraints of the materials and such but they did an admirable job but as far as a sculpture it seems to lack a consistent flow or focal point. So I come away with a feeling that it is perhaps a start to better things and that it is a kind of "plastic experience" of building and sculpture. ed 4 Feb 2010 @ 14:17 by susannahbe : Feeling Yes, on first impression (and of course only gathered from your photo and video) I agree that it seems to lack a consistant flow or focal point - it seems to have so many different things going on and different angles that I think it may detract from the overall thing. The roof itself is a statement and perhaps enough of one and it would have perhaps been a more pleasing overall picture if that had been the main focal point, rather than so many conflicting things that I feel gives it a feeling of confusion. Just an opinion of course. Thanks for reporting on it ed. :-) Other entries in Articles 1 Feb 2012 @ 18:53: sustainability 2012 31 Jan 2012 @ 16:56: Biome Community Harmony 2012 27 Jan 2012 @ 13:14: the $ problem 25 Jan 2012 @ 17:31: The Ocean of Pathos 2012 25 Jan 2012 @ 12:48: perspective 21 Jan 2012 @ 15:21: Humanity Prayer 2012 14 Jan 2012 @ 16:46: about love 2012 14 Jan 2012 @ 02:52: Modern Atlas 2012 13 Jan 2012 @ 23:21: law marridge and blessing 13 Jan 2012 @ 01:31: Internet Addiction 2012
