Inscriptions

A message consisting of a set of ten guidelines or principles is engraved on the Georgia Guide stones in eight different languages, one language on each face of the four large upright stones. Moving clockwise around the structure from due north, these languages are: English, Spanish, Swahili, Hindi, Hebrew, Arabic, Chinese, and Russian.

1. Maintain humanity under 500,000,000 in perpetual balance with nature.
2. Guide reproduction wisely - improving fitness and diversity.
3. Unite humanity with a living new language.
4. Rule passion - faith - tradition - and all things with tempered reason.
5. Protect people and nations with fair laws and just courts.
6. Let all nations rule internally resolving external disputes in a world court.
7. Avoid petty laws and useless officials.
8. Balance personal rights with social duties.
9. Prize truth - beauty - love - seeking harmony with the infinite.
10. Be not a cancer on the earth - Leave room for nature - Leave room for nature.[3]

15 Feb 2010 @ 05:03 by swanny @70.65.11.89 : Interesting
It looks like they calculated that it would be perhaps 10,000 years before these would be found after the recovery of humanity from the cataclysm of the cold war of the 1980s and they would be buried as they placed the ancient languages on top and then the primitive humanity of the future time ie 12,000 AD would dig them up and marvel at the size and weight and superior technology that made them and the global scope of the civilization. They would thus be buried under 16 feet of soil and would be unearthed to reveal the more advanced global languages that would have remained in pockets and reestablished themselves.

15 Feb 2010 @ 10:37 by susannahbe : Good morning :-)
I was just reading this - "Unite humanity with a living new language." Now, I know that this has been tried and I am not particularly advocating it.

I was just struck by the symbolism that 'we all speak different languages' not the actual concrete fact of it, but its symbolic message.

That is what it is with humanity, even those that think they are 'speaking the same language' usually aren't!

Do you get what I mean? Or am I being a bit abstract here! :-)

15 Feb 2010 @ 11:16 by swanny @70.65.11.89 : Yup
Yup I agree as meanings can be highly subjective and experientially loaded. I wonder if what these people preinternet, really were getting at was to have a universal communication 'system' ie internet which in a way was what saved the world from the nuclear race and cold war threat. Thus they saw communication as a valuable thing rather than what they stated as a universal living language. A language after all is only the nuts and bolts perhaps and communication is the value and application. It perhaps then was a foretelling of the internet.

15 Feb 2010 @ 11:41 by susannahbe : Glad . . .
you got what I meant :-) and you explained it better than I could " meanings can be highly subjective and experientially loaded" - exactly.

Yes, I see what you mean about the internet and it being a universal language - (it even has built in translation tools).

- I think it is amazing that in the last hour I have spoken to one person from here in the UK, two in the US, one in France and you in Canada - wonderful!

16 Feb 2010 @ 12:48 by swanny @70.65.11.89 : The Future?
Actually its confusing, if one regards these "guides" as a message from the past, it takes on a kind of "ominous" foreboding, but then I just turned this around and thought if you read them as a message from the "future" it takes on a totally different take?
VERY, very interesting....
Curious to see what others think....
Pretend or assume this is not a message or "guides" from the past but from the future
and so....????
it becomes a questions of intentions then doesn't it...
and where or to what one is being guided....
Actually I don't think they were intended to be seen as from the future
but.... thats just my "twist" on them although the "future is now so...?????
