THE FOREST GREEN: Distant Mountain

By Marissa A Spencer

Drifting on the wind-tossed sea
I spied a distant mountain
My puny efforts were for naught
To reach that vale and fountain

Darkness came upon the waves
My ship amid a starless night
No holding aloft torch or flame
Could summon forth hope or light

Yet, on an inner, whispered breeze
A cry came from the lonely bank
My drifting ship turned to seek
Safe harbor from the cold and dank

The hulking isle in darkness lay
Too cold and dark to search at all
The memory of your sweet voice
Was ne’er else than a Sirens’ call.

Moored against the stalwart rocks
The tides mark the passing days
No longer drifting, now marooned,
E’er longing for my lover’s face.
