Odd Happenings at Coloma

One year our family went to the Coloma mill, where Marshall’s men found gold in California. It is lovely in the foothills and we often took a picnic with us and panned for gold in the cold shallow river there. The area is covered with preserved buildings. The blacksmith shop will have someone demonstrating the art from time to time.
We had been hiking around after panning and passed the covered display of a timber from the original mill. I stopped in my tracks. I took a step. I stepped back. Something was different. I walked the parameter of the area. I could feel out an area of about 30 feet in diameter. There was something odd about that space. The children were watching me and made a remark that mom was being odd again. The feeling was not there the next time I visited. Perhaps I imagined it?
We then proceeded to the main museum. They had expanded and modernized it. It had collections of memorabilia and historic displays regarding the discovery of gold and California’s early years. I stepped inside the doorway. I saw to my left a nice display with replicas of gold nuggets found.

The hair on the back of my neck started to rise. I felt a palpable energy behind me. It was not happy energy. I slowly turned around. There behind me was a section of a tree with a section carved on it.
The names of four people killed by Indians. They had been buried beneath the tree. The tree had been razed for the highway. A tombstone of living wood it had been. I felt profound sadness and no small sense of outrage. Not the appropriate place for such an item.
