On July 21st of this year I came home from work and noticed the cats behaving oddly under my tree. One cat was swinging precipitously on the spindly dogwood tree and the others were in various stages of intense interest on the ground looking up at the large yard tree. Being a person who is always trying to practice the art of paying attention to everything, I saw this as atypical behavior. I heard an odd bird chirp and wondered what kind of bird it was. I am familiar with most of the birds in our area. We have amazing Mockingbirds and cheerful Robins and mischievous Scrub Jays. The well tailored Magpies visit en masse at times as well. I backed up into the street by my mailbox and peered through the foliage to see what kind of bird it was. I had seen a shape flit briefly, but could not tell what it was. It finally landed high above my head on a branch. I made sounds to it and said ‘hello’, (I’m a regular Dr Doolittle). To my amazement the yellow bird flew down and landed on my head. I walked very carefully into the house with a bird on my head. The two younger boys Matt and Ben were sitting on the couch. The bird immediately flew to Ben and landed on him. At this time I looked at it well for the first time (even I do not have eyes on top of my head lol ). It is a yellow, green, blue, pied colored Lovebird. It is a gorgeous specimen with turquoise on its back and slight peach color around its face. We put out signs all over the area to find the owner and no one called for it. It had no band and was apparently quite young. The little guy was very thirsty and hungry. The kids are totally delighted in our new friend. We love animals very much and I think the little guy knew it. I wanted to get a nice cage. It was currently living in a hamster cage. I tried to find one at garage sales, in the paper etc. No luck. So I went on EBAY… first time. I found a beautiful white new birdcage for 29 dollars and no shipping. It is absolutely lovely and a fitting home for our little friend. We have named him Mango. So…you never know what will drop out of the sky. © August 16, 2005 Marissa A Spencer

for years. Had budgies and keets, and a cockatiel once too. The cockatiel got spooked one summer day when the window was open and flew the coop. He tweeted forlornly for two nights in the nearby pine grove before his voice disapeared too. I've always hoped that he made it safely into some caring home. Be careful of Mango, he's got a reputation as a mesmerizer unparralelled by any.
