Perhaps, of all realms through which man passes, in which he sojourns, and from which he departs again, that of symbol is the most vast, and the most complex. It is so because it is the realm of allusion, of sedimentation, all superinposed one upon another, repressed through a series of forgettings, rejections, inhibitions. It is a realm where cultures intersect and overlap, disperse, and disappear. But it is an illusion to think they are swallowed up like cities engulfed by the sea. They are the primal nuclei of myth, religion, language and art.
