When Second Life meets Google Earth:

The World Wide Web will soon be absorbed into the World Wide Sim: an immersive, 3-D visual environment that combines elements of social virtual worlds such as Second Life and mapping applications such as Google Earth. What happens when the virtual and real worlds collide? By Wade Roush:

…within 10 to 20 years–roughly the same time it took for the Web to become what it is now–something much bigger than either of these alternatives may emerge: a true Metaverse. In Neal Stephenson’s 1992 novel Snow Crash, a classic of the dystopian “cyberpunk” genre, the Metaverse was a planet-size virtual city that could hold up to 120 million avatars, each representing someone in search of entertainment, trade, or social contact. The Metaverse that’s really on the way, some experts believe, will resemble Stephenson’s vision, but with many alterations. It will look like the real earth, and it will support even more users than the Snow Crash cyberworld, functioning as the agora, laboratory, and gateway for almost every type of information-based pursuit. It will be accessible both in its immersive, virtual-reality form and through peepholes like the screen of your cell phone as you make your way through the real world. And like the Web today, it will become “the standard way in which we think of life online,” to quote from the Metaverse Roadmap, a forecast published this spring by an informal group of entrepreneurs, media producers, academics, and analysts (Cascio among them)...

dream. This is somewhat happening and has been for 10 years. But...until we have implant chips that can make the immersive web a total experience it will remain flatworld. With humanities pention towards controlling others of their species for profit we can see exactly where this is heading.

Then I'll truly turn black hat and hack/crack/frak the s**t out of everything associated with franken web. Now there is the scuzzy-flatword API called Facebook, and other similar clones, horrors in it's own right, which is absorbing - like a diseased microbe - everything it can get it's pudgy, CIA funded, hands on...

For now the dark web inspires and keeps these 'buzzinezz' creeps at bey. All hail DARPA? I think not... the trend is clear, aberrated, and deformed beyond salvation.

Thanks kia...

This fluid 3D virtual net has also been strangely slow in coming. In many ways it seemed like it was going to happen very soon ... almost 15 years ago. In 1997 I spent lots of time in Alphaworld, which was a precursor to Second Life. It still exists today, and there's even an NCN meeting hall and a 3D interface to the public NCN website. None of which is particularly useful, but it really seemed like the direction things were moving.

I think they will, sooner or later. The right mix of technology and killer apps need to come together. I think it will be through augmented reality, as it is something instantly useful. You know, you walk along a street, and you can see all sorts of extra information in your glasses. Websites, commercial deals, historic information, navigation hints, etc. So, maybe some clever variant of Google Earth.

Interesting history is outlined on wiki... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Active_Worlds

"The largest world in the main AW universe is Alphaworld, which is also the first world. Alphaworld contains several more square kilometers of available space than the real-world state of California in the United States of America. To aid in navigating such a vast area you can "teleport" to a specified location, also you can maintain a "Teleport List", like a list of bookmarked web pages."

cool

If any of you go there, drop by 895N 814W and see the old NCN compound.
