The clock radio woke me up with a story about how investigations into Pinochet may open up that can of worms concerning how US banks are complicit in money laundering, and how the role of the banks in money laundering has never been investigated. I've just finished listened to the news and one of the main stories was about how the recent terrorist alerts in New York were based on data that was four years old. More than half the people interviewed on the street were of the opinion that the terrorist alerts are politically motivated to keep people on edge and from thinking about what is really going on; they not only are getting tired of it but getting angry as well. Ridge is reopening the Statue of Liberty to show that the people still have freedom, and the people are saying that they don't even have enough freedom to cross the street and making comments about how this is worse than communism. Second biggest story was how oil had gone over US$44 a barrel for the first time ever. This is having negative effects on stock markets and consumer spending. Makes me wonder if those terrorist threats to the NY stock exchange and world bank were setting up for a scapegoat in case the bottom did fall out of the economy; along the line of if the economy starts to free fall blow up a few economic buildings and blame it all on the terrorists. Crude Oil Rises to a Record on Concern About OPEC Capacity so it looks like we might be reaching pumping capacity. Reality is what doesn't go away when you stop paying attention to it, and the reality that we have to reduce our oil consumption is one of those facts that won't go away.
