I will shortly be doing a series of Newscasts from Hot Springs, Arkansas on the dangers of Chemtails.

In light of the possible indictments coming forth this next week, I thought that it might be a good idea to bring this particular post to the surface once again. For those of you that are new to this web site and to this post, it is time to begin to dig in and look for the truth.

For those of you who are old friends in this space, I have been committed to helping Wayne deal with his cancer for the past 7 years. I have found it necessary to back off of many activities. After a heroic fight with the 'Big C", Wayne made his transition on April 24, 2005. Since that Time, I have left Arizona and returned to my former home in Arkansas to be near my family, especially my granddaughters. I have returned to Journalism once more having been contributing editor for Arkansas Newspapers and having once done my own programs. I am up and at it once again. I might add that it feels good.

I have always had a love for birds and communicate well with them having learned to call the birds to come to me many years ago. I particularly love the majestic Raven with its nearly three foot wingspan.

The Magic of the Raven

The magic began to get really intense a few years ago when I was in training to be a Celtic Priestess. I was doing a channel session for the women prior to leaving on a field trip to Geronimo’s crystal cave in Southern Arizona and I was channeling Geronimo. He said that he would welcome us and meet with us at the caves.

I have been to his cave many times and take small groups there. According to Marek and Michael my Spirit associates, there are 5 ley lines in the complex of caves and the energy is such that if you make your intention known to the Universe your desires will manifest five times faster than if sitting in your home meditating. Needless to say the women were really excited. Packing enough food to last a week even though we were only spending the day, and gathering a collection of drums and rattles and blue corn as an offering to the Great Spirit, we headed out.

Now the Priestess pays attention to Omens or signs along the way. One of those omens turned out to be three red tailed hawks circling above us along the Interstate and that means sacred magic and messages from spirit. Animals to the Priestess are powerful medicine and good friends and since they always bring a special message for us we were all wondering what it would be.

The intense heat of summer has passed and so we have mild weather with clear blue Arizona skies and driving along we sing one of our favorite Shaina Noll songs "How could anyone ever tell you" from her album "Songs for the Inner Child" and this song is the theme song of our Southern Arizona group. We each had happy expectations for a joyous day.

Arizona has rock formations unlike any to be found anywhere on the planet. Stacked straight up one on top of another they never fall. They appear like Sentries on guard duty standing for eternity strong and stately. We talked in hushed tones about what we think Geronimo might have to say to us. All the ladies assume that I will channel him again. Little did any of know what would really happen that day.

When we arrived at the caves we pulled over and parked under a huge old oak tree and just sat there in silence… Just sitting and listening. We were mesmerized by the shear energy of the place. Long ago there was a great volcano that tossed up these great boulders that landed one on top of the other. They don’t fall down or slip and slide around. They really stay put so that it is safe to go inside and explore. Geronimo found this place and knew that is was really special and sacred. He prayed to the Great Spirit here and he and his men would replenish their energy here when they got very tired.

Eventually we got out of the car in silence and just stood looking around, but, as I got out of the car I had to duck under a low branch and as I did so I heard “hello… hello… hello.” As I straightened up just at eye level was an ancient raven calling to me and to the others. He spoke so clearly in human words that all of us heard and understood. In turn we spoke to him.

“You are such a handsome fellow” one of us spoke softly and with that he began to strut back and forth along the branch stopping from time to time to ruffle his feathers, preen himself and then repeated… hello… hello. He knew what we were saying to him. He told us that he would stay with us all day and show us around and that he would bid us farewell when it was time to go home. We were entranced feeling magic in the air.

All that day the spirit of great Chief, Geronimo stayed with us. Geronimo the old Raven also stayed all day. That is what we named the old Raven. Why? Well we knew that Geronimo was one of the greatest of all the wise Indian Shape Shifters. We felt that he had shape shifted his energy into the great bird. He was an ancient soul who came to earth to help another group of souls through a very difficult series of events. Geronimo, like Rasputin could not be killed. Many times the American Soldiers would point their guns at his chest at close range and watch in awesome terror as the bullets would pass straight through his body and he would simply turn and walk away. This happened time and again. We as priestess knew that this mighty one came forth from ancient times. He was one of the noble ones involved with Camelot and with the Joan of Arc Saga and he is still with humanity helping shift for eternity the consciousness of Humanity as only a wise old soul can. The Raven is legendary as a shape shifter as well. We could feel the energy connections between Geronimo and the Old Raven and so it seemed appropriate that they share the same name.

As for the great bird, once, long ago in Lemuria the Kahunas of the time were deeply troubled at the emotional muck that the people were trapped in. So they cried out to the Great Solar Birds, the Ravens of that time, to come and help. Ravens at the time were white, according to ancient legend but, as the Ravens drew close to humans they were able to see the black gooey muck of the energy field of most of the humans. In there effort to help. the Ravens got too close to the humans and got coated with the black gooey muck. The Ravens were no longer the mighty solar birds but now were earth bound and they became as black as the muck they had tried so courageously to remove from the energy fields of the humans. Now they could not return home. Like so many humans they were earth bound until such time as humans could learn to understand the majesty they really are. It is said that you can tell where the 4th dimensional humans are when you find large flocks of Ravens. It is said the monarchy of England will fall when the Raven leaves the great Tower. Churchill was concerned with the small number of Ravens during WWII and sent to the North Country for more pairs in order to preserve the Monarchy.

We climbed all through the rocks that day looking at the ancient smoke signal pots up on top and then on the inside on the floor were several bowl-like ground-out spots for mixing medicines or for doing sacred ceremonial smudging. The Indians used sage and other grasses and lit it and used the smoke the way churches use incense to cleanse and purify. Outside on the backside of the huge complex of boulders is a hollowed out place at shoulder height just the right size to put your face inside. In meditation, I had been told that if you put you face inside and sing the oms … up and down the musical scale that when you hit your soul note, …that you can see visions or hear the messages of Spirit. Each of us took a turn and then later back inside during lunch we shared our experiences. Many of us saw Geronimo in visions. Many saw Young warriors on their painted ponies riding by. Another said that one of the Indians told her that they were so glad that Americans were beginning to learn to respect the Indians and appreciate them.

Finally we gathered our belongings making certain that we left nothing behind. The priestess has a reverence for mother earth and is careful not to leave messes behind. As we loaded our car to return home, there on the same branch was the old Raven, Geronimo calling to us… Bye… Bye… Bye. As we drove off he flew behind us for a little ways.

Many months have passed since that day and many things have happened. My husband and I have bought a new home in the Santa Rita Mountains of Southern Arizona. The day we knew we were going to buy our new home we had stopped at a small café called the Gathering Grounds in Patagonia. We treated ourselves to a couple of veggie wraps and were sitting on a bench at the courthouse overlooking the city park when I spotted a very handsome young raven sleek and iridescent with hues of black and purple sitting in the huge old pine tree in front of the porch where we were sitting. He sat there the entire time that we were eating. When we were finished I gathered up our trash and put it in the waste basket on the porch and went and sat back down beside my hubby. We had all three of our dogs on leashes but that did not stop the raven from leaving his place in the pine tree and with a great gliding sweep he soared down and under the porch roof and passed with in feet of me. He was so close that I could hear the whooshing sound of his wings and feel on my face the rush of the wind created by those wings. Circling around in the air above us a few times he went back up into the tree. As we left I just know that his eyes followed us as we went up the hillside to our new home. Getting out of the car the first thing I did was run up to the great pine in our front yard at the edge of the drive way. I hugged that old tree and told it how glad I was to have it in my yard and that we would become good friends. I greeted the tree before I even went inside the house. That is how important that tree is to me. As priestess, I know that the pines clean the air of all manners of toxins and poisonous emissions from factories and automobiles. As I walked towards the house I heard the call of Raven and turning I spotted him sitting up in the pine tree.

“Hello my friend”, I call out to him and wave and grin real big at him. He hops back and forth from one foot to the other and paces back and forth. During the process of moving that raven was there to greet me every time I came to see the house, show it to a friend or bring a carload of things to take into the house.

Now that I am finally moved in the raven calls to me every morning at 8am. I always go out on the porch to speak with him. He has a message for me, I know he does.

“What is it? Tell me.”

But it was several days before I got the answer to my question and understood. There were a series of events in which the raven and sometimes he brought a couple of his friends to meet me. One day I saw a raven making backward loops in the sky above me. Now Ravens don’t usually do that. The priestess thinks of this sort of thing as an omen, something that we pay attention to. My curiosity was growing. And then it happened. The day for the answer came.

I was in the Spritual Community I-Conference discussion room speaking with a young man who lives in Pakistan. We talked of many things for several hours. I connected with him at about 2am in my time zone and we talked until just after 6:30 that morning. He told me how lonely he is because he has no one to talk to about his belief in the oneness of all of humanity and how humanity has one soul that makes us all connected, brothers, sisters and family. We spoke of the Heart Chakra as being the point of energy for compassion under the direction of the soul self and of how compassion is the energy that will heal our Planet and restore integration / integrity for the greatest good of all of us.

He did sound very lonely to me. He kept telling me how much he appreciated my staying and spending time with him. I told him that I would not leave him alone. I told him that I have the ability to project myself in my astral body to people in far distant places and that many people could actually see me. He asked me to do this and come and visit with him in his living room. We said our goodbyes and went our own ways that morning.

Heading for the kitchen for a drink of water I was greeted by Raven sitting on my window sill. Now this is very unusual behavior and therefore a great omen. I turned and went to the door and opening it and going out onto the porch I was amazed to see Raven sitting on a beam under the roof.

“Raven what is it that you want to say to me?”

“Do it! Just do it! Go to him! Go now!” and with those words Raven flew up and out of site but, in his place I saw Geronimo on his painted pony. In his hand was a staff or spear with feathers on streamers on one end. He raised it high above his head and rearing back on his pony he rammed that spear into the ground and then thrust his arm high into the air and bringing it down pounded his chest in the kind of salute reserved for dignitaries or for someone you have great respect for.

With a great voice he cried out, “Welcome home Lady of Camelot. It is time now to unite the worlds and all kingdoms. Do it. Do it now.”

I got the message from Geronimo and from the Raven that he shifted his consciousness into. The raven has been quiet the past few days. I remember Geronimo from the days of Camelot and also riding with him along side Joan of Arc. That mighty one has been involved with many things that have shifted for all time the consciousness of humanity. Now I think and reflect until the next time raven comes to me.

Months have gone by and it is April 2004 and time for the groundbreaking ceremony for the new wellness center that Wayne and I is building here. Geronimo has been coming every day for his dinner. He walks right up to me now. He loves corn chips. Every morning I see him out on the point where we are building the center walking in circles as if in meditation. When the participants began to arrive Geronimo would perch on the lowest branch of the mesquite tree at the edge of the driveway. He never flew away and then during the processional from the house out to the Point he sat in a tree just a few feet from us and watched the ceremony. He stayed with me until June and then took off for the High Country.

It is October now and the weather is getting cooler and there is a touch of Fall in the air. I have seen the first herds of Antelope behind the house. And then I hear him. The call of Geronimo high above me. I run into the house for some corn chips and then hurry outside. " Geronimo" I call out. He swoops down and lands just feet from me and I toss some chips to him. He hops excitedly from foot to foot chattering to me and I know he is as glad to see me as I am to see him.

In the photo of the great bird you will notice that he is standing on one leg. Ravens don't do that very often. But he does. That is his own special magic.

In January CBS News reported on bizarre geo-engineering experiments proposed for global warming reduction. The report confirmed that one of the methods advocated by physicist Edward Teller is to fill the atmosphere with metallic particles to "scatter away 1 or 2% of the sunlight...the sooner the better."

Last December, a Canadian citizen complaining to his local air authority about sky-muck over Victoria, British Columbia, was told by that authority that the chemtrail formations were the result of a joint U.S. and Canadian military exercise. His explanation was caught on audio tape and played for radio listeners all over the Western Hemisphere. Also recently, an FAA official confirmed in a taped interview with freelance radio reporter S. T. Brendt that he was told on four occasions in March to re-route commercial air traffic to accommodate a huge military aerial operation over the northeastern seaboard.

It is no secret that America's military-industrial megalith is secretly altering earth's atmosphere in frightening ways. Huge numbers of aircraft are now kept aloft to create "clouds" with ultra-tiny, ionized metallic particles. HAARP-generated microwave pulses are continually used to heat and agitate the ionosphere.

Synthetically-manufactured chem-clouds desiccate the air and very effectively block the sun. The principles of this grotesque aerosol project are spelled out in a number of U.S patents. In 1974, persons associated with National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) obtained patent US3813875 for using barium to create ion clouds in the upper atmosphere. In 1991, Hughes Aircraft Company obtained patent US5003186, a method for seeding the greenhouse gas layer with tiny particles which include "oxides of metal , e.g., aluminum oxide." The patent states that one proposed solution to global warming was "to add the tiny particles to the fuel of jet airliners, so that the particles would be emitted from the jet engine exhaust while the airliner was at its cruising altitude....."

The 1996 Air Force document titled Weather as a Force Multiplier, declares, "In the United States, weather-modification will likely become a part of national security policy with both domestic and international applications. Our government will pursue such a policy...."

By 1998, this policy became rudely conspicuous. Blue skies have become a rarity. Demoralized citizens have become increasingly ill and angered, not only by the aerosol project itself, but by the arrogance of those who do whatever they please, the consequences be damned.

Intrepid chemtrail investigator Clifford Carnicom, despite having his life threatened and his phone continually tapped, has compiled data showing that the atmosphere to be radically altered toward the alkaline. This indicates the abnormal presence of barium salts. Using spectroscopy and pH tests to prove his hypothesis, Carnicom warned that his findings have "major implications for both the chemistry and biology of the nation and the globe."

Carnicom also shrewdly discovered that in 1997, U.S. officials altered national visibility standards, indicating anticipation of an aircraft aerosol operation to be conducted over large geographic regions. The old visibility standard of 40 miles has been reduced to 10 miles. And climatic archive data shows that visibility BELOW 10 miles is now a regular occurrence, in major contrast to the norm only four years ago.

Radio talk show host Whitley Strieber recently carried on his web site an unconfirmed report that a group of former military officers used a private jet to obtain a sample of aerosol material being emitted by a military cargo aircraft. Laboratory tests on that sample reportedly confirmed that the effluent contained both aluminum and barium.

Unfortunately, aluminum and barium are toxic to humans. Hapless populations sprayed continually with these substances are bound to exhibit symptoms of neurological damage and chronic illness. The toxic effects of barium are confirmed by a 1992 Department of Health and Human Services publication. It states that barium can cause breathing difficulties, increased blood pressure, changes in heart rhythm, stomach irritation, muscles weakness, swelling of the brain, as well as damage to the liver, kidney, heart and spleen. Barium was reportedly used by the U.S. as a weapon in the Gulf War to make the enemy weak and ill.

Aluminum is toxic to the nervous system and deleterious to the brain. Its effects on human health were recently illustrated when Canadians in Espanola, Ontario, reported mass illness after low-flying U.S. jets strafed their town with condensation trails containing aluminum coated fibers (chaff). Investigators found area rainwater contained seven times the allowable limit for aluminum exposure, as people complained of neck pain, breathing problems, headaches, burning eyes and dry coughs.

While the military "bombs" populated areas with microscopic pollution particles, the Environmental Protection Agency warns of health dangers from breathing such particles. Just last year, EPA cited major studies which found that even moderate air pollution can trigger sudden death by changing heart rhythm in people with existing cardiac problems. "For air pollution to have such a substantial impact on public health and have it show up consistently is remarkable, " said an EPA official quoted by the Los Angeles Times. While EPA wags its finger at industrial pollution, it consistently denies any knowledge of chemtrail pollution, despite the agency's furtive monitoring of chemtrail web sites where photographic reports of such pollution is constantly updated.

Chemtrails and the illness invariably accompanies heavy spray campaigns.

There will be no nursing home in my future......... When I get old and feeble, I am going to get on a Princess Cruise Ship. The average cost for a nursing home is $200 per day. I have checked on reservations at Princess and I can get a long-term discount and senior discount price of $135 per d...

That leaves $65 a day for:

1. Gratuities, which will only be $10 per day.

2. I will have as many as 10 meals a day if I can waddle to the restaurant, or I can have room service (which means I can have breakfast in bed every day of the week).

3. Princess has as many as three swimming pools, a workout room, free washers and dryers, and shows every night.

4. They have free toothpaste and razors, and free soap and shampoo.

5. They will even treat you like a customer, not a patient. An extra $5 worth of tips will have the entire staff scrambling to help you.

6. I will get to meet new people every 7or 14 days.

7. T.V. broken? Light bulb needs changing? Need to have the mattress replaced? No Problem! They will fix everything and apologize for your inconvenience.

8. Clean sheets and towels every day, and you don't even have to ask for them.

9. If you fall in the nursing home and break a hip you are on Medicare. If you fall and break a hip on the Princess ship, they will upgrade you to a suite for the rest of your life.

Now hold on for the best! Do you want to see South America, the Panama Canal, Tahiti, Australia, New Zealand, Asia, or name where you want to go? Princess will have a ship ready to go. So don't look for me in a nursing home, just call shore to ship.

P.S. And don't forget, when you die, they just dump you over the side...at no charge.

Come Clean: Gorbachev Launches Global Campaign Against WMD By Sanjay Suri-Inter-Press Services- Friday 24 September 2004 LONDON - Mikhail Gorbachev is an ex-president going after weapons of mass destruction. But not the way U.S. President George Bush thought he was going after them in Iraq.

That war on Iraq was a mistake, Gorbachev said in London this week. "It not only undermined international law, it undermined democracy. Millions spoke out, but the war was launched in spite of their democratic views," he told media representatives.

Gorbachev was in London to launch an offensive against weapons of mass destruction (WMD) of quite another kind; he came to launch a Come Clean campaign put together by several NGOs including Greenpeace, the Campaign of Nuclear Disarmament (CND) in Britain and Medact, a group supporting health issues in conflict areas.

Mikhail Gorbachev became President of the Soviet Union in 1990, and stepped down as head of state at the end of 1991. He was earlier one of the key Soviet leaders as a member of the Soviet presidium. Since 1992 he has been president of the International Nongovernmental Foundation for Socio-Economic and Political Studies, better known as The Gorbachev Foundation.

The leader of the former Soviet Union seemed at peace with his new role. A naïve attempt? "I have been suspected of being naïve many times," he said.

He had been called naïve in 1986, he said, when he appealed for elimination of nuclear weapons by 2000. "There were two reactions to that," he said. "One, that it was all propaganda. Two, that it was an illusion. But we were able to eliminate whole classes of nuclear weapons."

Gorbachev was emphatic about his campaign against WMD. "If they exist, sooner or later there will be disastrous consequences. They can fall into the hands of terrorists. It is not enough to safeguard them, they must be abolished."

Anyone who supports the existence of weapons of mass destruction should not be allowed to run for the post of president or prime minister, Gorbachev said. "You may again think I'm naïve. But I'm not stupid, I know what I'm saying."

As Soviet leader Gorbachev knew what he was sitting on. His initiative led to a joint declaration with former U.S. president Ronald Reagan that a nuclear war can never be won and must never be fought.

Gorbachev, who won the Nobel peace prize in 1990 for helping bring the Cold War to an end, now sees new cause for alarm. "In recent years we are seeing a tendency to change military doctrines to declare use of nuclear weapons more acceptable and perhaps pre-emptive strikes with nuclear weapons more conceivable."

The new campaign launched in London Thursday seeks to counter new dangers. The campaign is being led in London by 96-year-old Prof Sir Joseph Rotblat, who won the Nobel peace award in 1995. Prof Rotblat, who is Polish by birth worked on building the atom bomb in Britain during the Second World War. He abandoned the project when it became clear that Germany was not building the bomb.

He turned instead to a peace mission to avert the danger posed by nuclear weapons. As someone who almost built the atom bomb, he too knows just what he is talking about.

But as a former president Gorbachev knows that peace does not mean pacifism. Terrorism has to be countered. He believes "in traditional methods like police methods, use of commandos against terrorist structures, and this too with the approval of the United Nations Security Council."

There are financial flows that need to be stopped. "There are many well-known things happening in the financial system, and these channels need to be cut, there needs to be a better central financial system." And with terrorism arising from fundamentalism, "religious leaders need to speak out against the actions of their followers".

Finally he said there is a need to fight terrorism by fighting poverty. "Where billions are deprived of hope and a decent life, it becomes possible to recruit followers for terrorism."

But was all this being naïve too? What about pragmatic solutions?

The agreement between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Bush on reduction of weapons should be implemented. "And other members of the nuclear club should join in the process. Otherwise there are about 30 threshold countries that can start testing and acquiring nuclear weapons."

But is he the leader who unleashed unrest and lack of security through his policies of glasnost (openness) and perestroika (restructuring) that led to the break-up of the Soviet Union?

Gorbachev had an answer to that one earlier in the day for a 13-year-old schoolgirl of Russian origin at a London school.

The results of perestroika as he had planned it would have taken 20 to 30 years to attain. He blamed his successor Boris Yeltsin for offering what he could never have delivered.

"They (the Russian people) believed the promise of a quick fix and they felt that if Gorbachev was not delivering on a better life quickly let's support Yeltsin," Gorbachev told the girl, according to a local news agency.

"The result was the disintegration of the country, shock therapy in the army and chaos," he said. "We are still feeling the consequences of this."

I got this today and found it interesting. Deb: You were very cautious in your reply to my comments about Clinton. I would be interested in your assessment of him since your do live in Arkansas and have a lot of information that I don't have.

I really thought I had gotten away with that one....scooted under the fence and avoided interrogation. Well, dear me.....this may be THE NOVEL you were asking for. You see, I've actually met the man...a few times. Long before there was ever a "blue dress"...there was a Ms. Paula Jones (remember her??) I've met Paula, too. Her niece, Amber, and my daughter Alleatha have been very dear friends since the fifth grade. I'll tell you a story...probably not as great as Bill's and Paula's (they made the tabloids...I didn't)...but perhaps it will shed a little light on the subject.

I first met Bill...well, not exactly "met"...it wasn't like "Hello, my name is Debbie"...I suppose encountered is the better word...back around 1979 or 1980. Tammie and I both wonder what our lives would have been like had we stayed in California. I most certainly would have had purple hair, body piercing and tattoos. More than likely I would have taken up residence in some type of "girl's school"...pregnant and strung out on drugs. But life intervened. Instead, I grew up on the most "wholesome" farm imaginable. One had to be incredibly creative in their efforts to find new forms of self-entertainment. Judging from what I've read in TomStory , you experienced somewhat similar circumstances, too.
I was 17 years old when I finished high school. I could boast and brag and tell you that I finished the race in second place...as my class Salutatorian...but upon investigation, one would realize that this accomplishment fell short of the apparent miracle that one would have assumed it was. You see, the truth was there were only 10 girls in my graduating class. Five of them were named Debbie. They honored the right Debbie...but the odds were admittedly in my favor.
I wasn't the most adventurous creature. Your assessment of "cautious" would be more correct. I told you earlier that I came from a region of Arkansas in which no one had ever had the dream, fortitude...oh, yes...and the MONEY to go to college. The recruiters would come to the high school...and would often be discouraged and just turn away. Not to be boasting...but I was probably the first...in at least a decade that had actually both "entered" and "exited" college....with a diploma....Most usually dropped out after the first semester. It was a private college that I attended...not state funded....because the "cautious" soul that I was....I traveled a mere 20 miles from home. Not to feel cheated out of the "college experience"...I was a dormitory resident...and home every weekend. I paid a pretty price for that experience. Dad offered no financial assistance, whatsoever. I was on my own. Later, when I had shown I was in it for the long haul...he engaged in some "cattle trading." I paid $404 for a huge black cow--which I affectionately named "Debbo." Every spring old Debbo would have a calf...I would sell it at auction...and make a payment to the college to avoid jail.
I, like you, did not inherit John Edgar's gift for mathematics....and to make matters worse, my high school only offered "Beans and Taters" math. Everything a good farm girl would ever need in life. No chemistry, physics, or Trigonometry. At $450 a "pop"...back then, that was nothing short of a BANG*# ----I had to forfeit summer vacation(s) and shell out over $1000 for a 3 hour college credit for my Algebra requirement.
Not only did I enter college "cautious"...but I was the most incredibly naive young lady imaginable. The year prior, I had gone on a high school graduation trip to California with Becky. This was the last time I was ever in California. Becky and I were standing in line at Disneyland...and I heard the phrase "Blonde Bombshell." I turned to see..it was ten years later before I finally figured out where she had been standing. I was never interested in "fellows"...never been on a "real date"...and you can definitely read "everything" into that statement. I never understood how guys "knew"...but they did. I quickly learned that I had become a "quest"...for every red blooded Arkansas Farm Boy on that Campus. So, I did what any girl in my situation would do...I lived a double life. I pretended I was "a player"...but told everyone that I was taken already. I even attended a Fraternity Costume Party dressed as a Playboy Bunny....little tail and all. I was a late bloomer...in every sense of the word. That little tail was the perfect accessory for my "little everything else."
I don't think I gained from college what was intended. I was verbally abused by an instructor...to the point my mother sought legal help. She had thrown chalk at me in the classroom...screamed she "wanted to kill me"...and forbid the other students from letting me participate in their study groups. She told me I was "achieving poorly"...although I had a "B" in her class...and would never live to see a career in the Air Force...as I had dreamed of. In otherwords, she told me I wouldn't amount to anything. I would not have been believed, had the chemistry teacher not been having a board meeting in the next room late one evening ..during a particularly "rough" attack. The adults who overheard the encounter were horrified...they knew who the teacher was...but never the student....you see, they told me later that they didn't want to cause me any further pain or embarrassment...and this was probably the only time in my entire life that my mouth remained shut....I just only sobbed..AND I SAID NOTHING. She joked before the class that those who "Couldn't Cut the Mustard"...would just end up working at McDonald's. I'm not sure what I learned...or why that lesson was even necessary in the first place. I'm 43 years old now...and I still carry the scars and low self esteem of having gone through that ordeal.
So here I was, both naive and battered when I was first approached by my college advisor.
He told me that he had an "offer" I just simply couldn't refuse....an "Opportunity"...he told me.
In those days, students were given odd jobs around the campus...as a means of making extra money for college. The college faculty had been informed that an important individual would be visiting the campus...for a fundraiser...and the mission was to find any and all "suitable" young ladies to cater the event. Pretty dresses...nice crisp white hostess jackets...smiles, smiles and more smiles....and shiny sterling silver coffee carafes. I was one of the "CHOSEN" ones.....This was the perfect salve for my suffering self esteem...
Enter Bill Clinton...
I have never experienced such an atmosphere before. This was a man who was in his 30's..and merely the Governor of the State of Arkansas. What charisma he had....what awe I had. To see people responding to another human being in such a fashion..it was so thick in there...it could have been sliced with a knife. The man..even then...had an entourage with him...and an air about him. As young, innocent and naive as I was at the time...I was able to recognize that "something big" was taking place. It must have been that he was being "groomed" for the presidency.
This wasn't my first encounter with the man, however. I had been selected to attend a "political convention" for young ladies at the end of my junior year in High School. I'm not sure if you are familiar with this forum... "Girls State"??? as it was called. We young ladies were introduced to numerous politicians through out our stay at this convention. We set up mock governments...discussed politics..and learned to develop leadership abilities. Well, that was the intent anyway....I learned to follow...not lead. This is my first memory of Bill Clinton.
Even then...he was already "special." Still, "wet behind the ears"...I wasn't exactly sure why he was "special"...but Darling Debbie, the follower that she was, ran with the crowd of screaming and yelling 16 and 17 year old girls..who were chasing this poor fellow without end. Nothing had "bloomed" on this poor girl (yet)...but it can be said that at 5'10"...I definitely had legs. They came in rather handy at the time...and my legs even gained me the coveted prize of getting to tote the "Silver Coffee Carafe" later in college.Due to good genetics.. I was able to outrun the crowd of young ladies...and make my way all the way to the front..as Bill Clinton was attempting to "escape." I chased the man...as he was being driven off...and I was so determined that I would just "TOUCH" him...I just had to touch him. Growing up on a farm, I had had the opportunity to touch many things (never a Turkey)...but to go home and get to say that I had touched Bill Clinton.....wouldn't that just have been the gravy on the giblets??? Well, alas....life interevened. I'm not sure if I ever touched the man....my fingers were instead rolled up into his car window. Here I was running along, clicking my camera with one hand...while the other was engaged in his car window..
I haven't a clue as to what may have happened to those photographs...they were left at my mother's house during my college years. Obviously, they never surfaced. Thus, I missed my opportunity at fame at fortune....a personal injury lawsuit.....and the TABLOIDS.
Later in life, when the opportunity presented itself, I voted for Bill Clinton. For Governor of Arkansas...and then later, again..for President. I probably share the same sentiment as many in America who are unable to shake the image of the "Blue Dress." Bill's trouble go beyond the blue dress...'less we forget. There's the matter of Jennifer Flowers...and Paula Jones, too. Alleatha repeatedly told me about her friend Amber's Aunt Paula. I just was slow to make the connection. I was working as a "substitute" nurse at one of the nearby elementary schools...when Paula came waltzing in. Honestly, I didn't recognize her.She is the teeny-tinyest lady ever...and she definitely speaks with a Southern Twang. The irony of the situation was...this was the same time frame that she was having that Boxing Match on TV with Tonya Harding the Ice Skater. During the evening news was when I recognized that I had been talking to Paula. When Rick retired form the Air Force...we drove numerous neighborhoods (tearfully) trying to locate a home we could afford. We found the cutest "little"..well, not exactly "Little" yellow house....a dollhouse...with white porch railing. It's just around the corner ..and a few miles from where we actually ended up living. We had to "down size" just a wee bit....We got us a house with white porch railing, too.....But, MISS PAULA got the yellow house. I know you've never toilet papered a house at Halloween...neither have I....but I had to fight this incredibly strong urge to not sneak into her yard in the middle of the night and place a sign in her yard that read "THIS IS THE HOUSE THAT BILL BOUGHT." I felt just slightly cheated...had fate worked in the other direction...he would have bought me a house, too.
All good things come to an end, they say....Bill had to leave the "Big House" he had grown to love. Of course, Hillary wanted a new house, too. So as time would tell...Bill bought her one, too.....in New York. Yes, I suppose it must be said...that in spite of Bill's Dry Cleaning Dilemmas (or lack thereof)...he managed to run a pretty good race. To think that I started out my life..so innocent and naive...I definitely have managed to develop opinions...thanks to my life's experiences.
A few things concern me...but in all fairness....they do say that hindsight is 20/20. Rick and I were stationed in Germany for a portion of the "Clinton Years." Rick had the opportunity to travel to various countries...from Germany. One such adventure led him into the United Arab Emirate / Saudi Arabia. This was, of course, before 9/11...but it is shocking to think that the scheme was already in it's infancy. Rick and I suppose that we innocently passed by the "Homberg, Germany" residence of the highjackers...as they sat up there planning our fates. After Rick left the Arabs...it wasn't much later...the Khobar Towers were bombed. I was able to put a face on "only one" of the men that died there...and I will never forget the phone call I recieved..his name was Jeremy. Rick had been near the Khobar Towers..it sends shudders and chills down one's spine. Later, it was the USS Cole...the Embassy....and to think...they even "practiced" once before on the World Trade Center.
Apparently we were being chipped away at with an ice pick....and we didn't even recognize the danger. I would venture to say that the majority of Americans at that time had never even heard of Jihad...or Al Qaida. We probably would have been hard pressed to have located either Iraq or Iran on a map. Shocking to think that we had such a mortal enemy...and didn't even know it??? Beyond the "Blue Dress"...the horrible legacy that it is in itself...stands out in my mind the issue of National Security. How many unheeded warnings...and missed opportunities were there??. What was the Clinton Administration doing???? We could have had Sadam Hussein in Gulf War #1....but that would have been the responsibility of Bush #1...not our Boy Bill. To this day...I have never understood that. Yes, I voted for Bush 1. If I must tell the truth, I voted for Bush 2, as well.
I was never impressed with Al Gore...and I was rationalizing...that I wasn't actually voting for "W"...but rather for Dick Cheney and Colin Powell. I reasoned that "W" was probably really wet behind the ears. I wonder if I would have even voted for "HIM"...but his father (who he could go to for advice??) was seasoned. Bush Dad at least knew who our enemies were...or at least I hoped (by this time) he did. I would have given Schwarzkopff a cabinet position, too...Colin Powell...Dick Cheney....all of them. Then I would have gone to bed at night...not afraid someone might be under the bed.
I regret that our National Security has deteriorated to the state that it is in. In my view...remember Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs??.....we must be safe.
Food..shelter....safety...
I don't have a lot of faith in John Kerry's abilities. I haven't a clue as to who his cabinet members or advisor's would be....not really even clear on what his plan and strategy would be. Our national security is a huge issue...for us all. It strikes on a rather personal level, too.....Rick's two children serve(d) in Iraq...25 year old Carrie...mother of a 3 year old...military Police Woman...and James, father of a six year old.. a Medic. They are both in the Arkansas National Guard.

Truthfully, if you are still "trying" to get one or more of these desires together now, consider dropping a few until later, maybe until Spring Equinox 2005. Often we have great ideas, but our sense of timing is off, or we actually don't really want something anyway.

There is always a beautiful harmonic that moves into place when the Sun goes into Libra (the Fall Equinox), and this harmonic power is especially strong with the 2004 Fall Equinox because four planets--Sun, Jupiter, Mars, and Mercury--will be setting in a harmonic field from September 22 through November 12. So, like striking a bell perfectly so the tone resounds deeply and clearly for minutes, if you bring the solar harmonic to yourself when the Sun goes into Libra, all four planets will help you resonate with potent and balanced frequencies.

Gerry and I recently taught a workshop at Mirabai Books in Woodstock, NY, and I was very impressed with how far our students are advancing in the midst of the Bushite collective insanity. Many students are really seeing how much their own thoughts create the world. These days, we all live in the midst of an angry, greedy, manipulative energy field in the USA. A student noted that one person with an open heart and a clear mind can reach and assist 90,000 disturbed and confused people on the planet. Since this particular Fall Equinox has such highly unusual harmonics, I suggest you consider balancing yourself and 90,000 people right along with you!

Looking at the Fall Equinox chart, which you may want to print out so you can look at it as you read this text, Jupiter, Mars, and Mercury are poised to follow the Sun into Libra, and the Sun conjuncted Jupiter in Virgo the evening before the Equinox, which powerfully grounded personal expansion. Jupiter moves into Libra on 9/24, Mars into Libra 9/26, and Mercury into Libra 9/28. This means that the ability to harmonize our sense of self occurs at the Equinox when the Sun moves into Libra; then the ability to expand and even use mastery powers to enhance our identity occurs when Jupiter moves into Libra; the force and aggressive energy to take our personal power occurs when Mars goes into Libra; and the ability to comprehend and communicate a clear sense of who we are occurs when Mercury goes into Libra. The Sun/Jupiter conjunction in Virgo just before the Fall Equinox grounds and structures our self worth, and then like that well-wrung bell, a wonderful Jupiterian harmonic infuses our hearts with confidence. Just after Mars goes into Libra on 9/26, Mars conjuncts Jupiter, which intensifies feelings of wellbeing.

Mercury will conjunct the Sun in 13 Libra on October 6, which will bring much new thought about these beautiful harmonics, as well as complete the Mercury retrograde cycle of August 9 through September 2. All this deepens because Pluto exactly squares Mercury in Virgo. Mars squared Pluto on September 9, which released really incredible underworld forces, and the Sun squared Pluto on September 11, which made the dark underworld forces meaningful, manifest, and menacing for the world. Hurricane Ivan is a potent image for Mars as well as for the Sun squaring Pluto, and Ivan is likely to cause widespread destruction on September 15, when the Sun meets Mars. (I am writing this September 12 because I have to travel.) What does all this mean? At the personal level, it means we come to the Fall Equinox balancing with many deep and truthful insights about reality. At the political level, the collective insanity rages on and on, and many people object to a barbaric version of reality but feel helpless because few have figured out how a collective insanity functions.

Pluto's transits force me to be very political in this Fall Equinox reading, because the Sun/Mars squares to Pluto are deeply involved with the 1776 USA Founding chart. (See the Methodology for the Sibly USA Founding chart referred to hereinafter as "1776".) The 1776 Mars in 21 Gemini squares the 1776 Neptune in 22 Virgo. Pluto was in 20 to 24 degrees of Sagittarius December through July 2004, activating the 1776 Mars square Neptune. This was a long and agonizing period because Pluto retrograded at 22 Sag just after the Spring Equinox. If you recall, this was the period when it became apparent that the US was mired in Iraq, the prisoner abuse scandals were revealed, and the 9/11 commission and many writers were examining US intelligence agencies. We have had a
short period of slight relief from Pluto opposing the 1776 Mars and squaring the 1776 Neptune during August and September. The same issues will come back full bore October 2004 through January 2005, and Pluto returns to this range April 2005 through November 2005. The reason Pluto always has his way and forces us to transform or die, to be truthful or get caught, is simply because he moves so slowly and hammers us for so
long. In this case, what's getting hammered is the integrity of the US and respect for the US in the world. Each one of us who can face the truth now influences 90,000 people who are afflicted with foggy brains.

To speak my truth, I have been amazed by how much progress half the people are making in the US. The others are busy flag-waving and going gaga over the Bushites. I have stated many times that Americans must wake up and realize that our government is and always has been involved in conspiracies and covert action just like any other government in the world. A belief was instilled in Americans that our political system is
different. Americans fell for this idea because the 1776 Mars in Gemini squaring Neptune in Virgo makes us prone to violent fantasies and delusions of self importance, and Hollywood makes sure the masses can'tthink straight. Now, this delusional complex has gotten so huge that while our country slaughters thousands of innocent Iraqis, the only concern is about American soldiers and their families.

The Pluto transits to the 1776 chart during 2003 through 2005 are the reckoning for America. Since the problem is the American inability to realize Americans are no better or worse than anybody else, then those of us who can see the truth and help others to also do it are very important right now. The whole Fall Equinox period will be a time of more truth coming out and a building awareness of what the world thinks of America. Gerry and I travel a lot, and I can tell you, most of the world is terrified of America and its violence in the Middle East. American behavior is widely compared to the rise of the Third Reich in the 1930s. Pluto will clarify the world's attitude regarding US policy this fall, and Pluto may present a solution during 2005. That is what Pluto-square-Mercury tells us as the Sun moves into Libra. When Mercury goes into Libra on 9/28, you may see some revelations along these lines.

During the Fall Equinox, Chiron in Capricorn (just past the Moon in Capricorn) trines Mercury (exact the next day), which informs us that being able to face these truths, no matter how difficult, will be a healing. Chiron opposes Saturn in Cancer, which suggests these lessons will be very major. Thinking of Saturn as a stern father who loves us and knows we must be strong, let us have a look at Saturn's influence during the fall. Saturn is in 25 Cancer and moves to 27 Cancer where it retrogrades on November 8, just after the election. The 1776 Pluto is 27 Capricorn, directly opposing it! Then Saturn moves to oppose Pluto, stops, and then goes back for while. This is a big influence that begins during the Equinox; our stern father is coaxing out the truth about what America is doing. This says that unless we change, the rest of the world will unite against us maybe in 2005, just as we had to against Hitler 60 years ago. The most fascinating thing about these extraordinary dynamics is that Chiron in Capricorn is approaching the 1776 Pluto at the Equinox, and Chiron conjuncts the 1776 Pluto in January 2005. The truth that is coming is a healing for all, except for the people who believe the US should control the world.

The midpoint between the Moon and Chiron is quincunxed by Venus in Leo. This suggests that potent female forces will push for a great healing of feelings that have been so traumatized by events during the early phase of this New Millennium. Few other astrologers paid much attention to the Chiron/Pluto conjunction on December 30, 1999, which was a key aspect that will color the next 100 years, since the Chiron /Pluto conjunction was right on the 1776 Ascendant of 12 degrees Sagittarius rising. The Millennial chart is prophetic for the World Trade Center Bombing Chart (WTC). [Millennial Moon conjuncts WTC Mercury/Ascendant; Millennial Chiron/Pluto conjuncts WTC Pluto; and Millennial Mercury on the Galactic Center opposes the WTC Moon.] Astrologers, check these charts in the Methodology! What does this mean for us now? It means we will heal this terrible American blindness, and the Fall Equinox Venus shows the way. Venus not only quincunxes the Moon/Chiron midpoint, she also trines Pluto in fire, which says the feminine is the source for healing.

Sun/Jupiter/Mars quincunxes the lunar North Node, which tells us the Libra harmonic that is coming in will guide us forward on this treacherous karmic pathway. How karmic is it? Well, outside of astrology, America's secret societies, which have been running our
country since 1776, believe that America is meant to be the new Atlantis, the conquering civilization that controls the Earth for everyone else's benefit. Notice what happened to Atlantis! That is the level of karma that is unfolding, so no wonder all this is intense! Hmmmm, so what about our trusty transformer, Uranus? Uranus in early Pisces, still finding its water wings in murky Neptune, quincunxes Sun/Jupiter/Mars; our change patterns are erratic, confusing, pushy, and uncomfortable. Uranus makes us feel like donkeys being pulled down the road, and eventually we just want to sit down. We can't! Pluto-trine-Venus means that tattling females will invade male secret meetings, or crawl in the sack with somebody who needs to get taken down. After all, it doesn't take much intelligence to see the election is a puppet show, since both Bush and Kerry went to Yale and are both members of Skull and Bones. They both think they are going to found the new Atlantis, but that's the past! Half of us are heading into a transformative future and learning how to master our brain frequencies. If earth changes are to shake up the world as they did when Atlantis fell, then everybody gets on a more equal footing. Hurricanes might be making Jeb Bush uncomfortable.

Regarding events in Washington, DC, this fall, the Fall Equinox chart is cast for Washington, which enables me to add house positions to this reading. To read a seasonal chart, only planetary angles and signs can be used. If you want houses for your location, just cast your chart for your location. Yet, isn't it amazing how much you can see even without houses? As for Washington, the Sun/Jupiter/Mars/Mercury stellium falls in the 10th house, which suggests the emphasis in the fall will be on media, aggressive force, money, and power. Pluto in 1 squares Mercury in 10, which suggests that darkness and fear will be the order of the day. Your only option is to turn off the TV, especially since the only thing keeping it going is the hundreds of millions of dollars of ads being wasted by Bush and Kerry. Neptune and Uranus in 3 means the most potent forms of mind manipulation and surprise will be going on, which will wreak havoc with the nervous systems of anybody tuning in. Moon/Chiron in 2 means pain will be potently grounded as death mounts and meaning diminishes. The lunar North Node in 5 suggests Washington will be very creative, which has been one of the hallmarks of the Bushites. Saturn is in 8, which suggests the great influence of secret societies now. Venus in Leo is the wild card during the Fall Equinox, and she is in 9-house of spirit-which means the female solutions that are found will be very spiritual; the goddess is greater than male powers. The fire goddess is the one who comes to break down destructive patterns. Perhaps one of the Bushites will get caught in the sack with one of the goddesses.

The influence of the Fall Equinox chart holds until the Winter Solstice, so you may want to print this analysis out and refer to it occasionally. Remember, the New Moon influence also holds strongly until the Aries Full Moon on September 28. Then Mercury will moves into Libra, and you will really be able to ascertain the potent harmonics. Using harmonic powers is rather tricky because they are so subtle. Your access to this wisdom lies right in the intentions you've been working with since Spring Equinox, so learn from your own life and forget about the Bushites, who are the past attempting to get out of the past, and get into the present. You are the future.

Laus Deo... Washington Monument High atop the Washington Monument I thought that you and others may like to see this. One detail that is not mentioned, in DC, there can never be a building of greater height than the Washington Monument. With all the uproar about removing the ten commandments, ...

Laus Deo... Washington Monument

On the aluminum cap, atop the Washington Monument in Washington DC, are displayed two words: Laus Deo. No one can see these words. In fact, most visitors to the monument are totally unaware they are even there and for that matter, probably couldn't care less.

Once you know Laus Deo's history, you will want to share this with everyone you know. But these words have been there for many years; they are 555 feet, 5.125 inches high, perched atop the monument, facing skyward to the Father of our nation, overlooking the 69 square miles which comprise
the District of Columbia, capital of the United States of America.

Laus Deo! Two seemingly insignificant, unnoticed words. Out of sight and, one might think, out of mind, but very meaningfully placed at the highest point over what is the most powerful city in the most successful nation in the world.

So, what do those two words, in Latin, composed of just four syllables and only seven letters, possibly mean? Very simply, they say "Praise be to God!"

Though construction of this giant obelisk began in 1848, when James Polk was President of the United States, it was not until 1888 that the monument was inaugurated and opened to the public. It took twenty five years to finally cap the memorial with a tribute to the Father of our nation Laus Deo:
Praise be to God!"

From atop this magnificent granite and marble structure, visitors may take in the beautiful panoramic view of the city with its division into four major segments. From that vantage point. one can also easily see the original plan of the designer, Pierre Charles l'Enfant, a perfect cross
imposed upon the landscape, with the White House to the north. The Jefferson Memorial is to the south, the Capitol to the east and the Lincoln Memorial to the west.

A cross you ask ? Why a cross? What about separation of church and state? Yes, a cross; separation of church and state was not, is not, in the Constitution. So, read on how interesting and, no doubt, intended to carry a profound meaning for those who bother to notice.

Praise be to God! Within the monument itself are 898 steps and 50 landings. As one climbs the steps and pauses at the landings the memorial stones share a message. On the 12th Landing is a prayer offered by the City of Baltimore; on the 20th is a memorial presented by some Chinese Christians; on the 24th a presentation made by Sunday School children from New York and Philadelphia quoting Proverbs 10:7, Luke 18:16 and Proverbs 22:6. Praise be to God!

When the cornerstone of the Washington Monument was laid on July 4th, 1848 deposited within it were many items including the Holy Bible presented by the Bible Society. Praise be to God! Such was the discipline, the moral direction, and the spiritual mood given by the founder and first President
of our unique democracy: "One Nation, Under God."

I am awed by Washington's prayer for America. Have you never read it? Well, now is your unique opportunity, so read on!

Laus Deo! As you probably guessed, over 92 percent of Americans like the idea that our Pledge of Allegiance includes the phrase "under God." It is clear when one studies the history of our great nation, that Washington's
America was one of the few countries in all the world established under the guidance, direction and banner of Almighty God, to whom was given all praise honor and worship by the great men who formed and fashioned her pivotal foundations.

When one stops to observe the inscriptions found in public places all over our nation's capitol, he or she will easily find the signature of God, as it is unmistakably inscribed everywhere you look.

Though many try to disprove and reason, their arguments are weak and easily proven without basis. Their efforts will forever be in vain; God assures us of that. Have you noticed as of late, how many more people are coming together, affirming the fact that this nation was, from the beginning, built on God? Any nation that is not built upon God will fail Do you wonder why, when other nations fall into an abyss, does the United States continually prosper? Now you know, but do not let the arrogance of some instill doubt
within you. The truth is, we have always been one nation under God! Laus Deo! Praise be to God!

You may forget the width and height of "Laus Deo", it's location, or the architects but no one who reads this will be able to forget its meaning, or these words: "Unless the Lord builds the house its builders labor in vain. Much has happened while I have been gone. Wayne has been very ill for some time now. But I am happy to say that he is now on the mend. He is on a lecture tour in Montreal speaking to Grad Students at the University about new modes of construction, city planning. Permaculture and the like.

We move to Patagonia Arizona last year and love it here. Quiet and Peaceful.

Looks like I need to clean up the news log a bit and answer some of your replies.

Michigan Police Stories:

good

A Michigan policeman had a perfect spot to watch for speeders, but wasn't getting many. Then he discovered the problem - a 12-year-old boy was standing up the road with a hand painted sign, which read "RADAR TRAP AHEAD". The officer then found a young accomplice down the road with a sign reading "TIPS" and a bucket full of money. (And we used to just sell lemonade!)

BETTER

A motorist was mailed a picture of his car speeding through an automated radar post in Troy, MI. A $40 speeding ticket was included. Being cute, he sent the police department a picture of $40. The police responded with another mailed photo of handcuffs.

BEST

A young woman was pulled over for speeding. As the Michigan State Trooper Officer walked to her car window, flipping open his ticket book, she said, "I bet you are going to sell me a ticket to the State Troopers Ball."

He replied, "Michigan State Troopers don't have balls."

There was a moment of silence while she smiled, and he realized what he'd just said. He then closed his book, got back in his patrol car and left. She was laughing too hard to start her car.

Algae: Power Plant of the Future? By John Gartner 2:00 a.m. Aug. 19, 2002 PDT

Energy experts -- who disagree on the when, but not the if, of the eventual depletion of fossil fuels -- are predicting that within decades the world will switch to a utopian hydrogen economy, where energy will be abundant, inexpensive and nonpolluting.

Hydrogen is used by fuel cells to generate electricity without generating those nasty greenhouse gases.

Hydrogen can be extracted from fossil fuels, but currently it's more expensive than directly using oil or natural gas, so this method is only a temporary fix. Water can be split into hydrogen and oxygen through electrolysis, but that requires electricity generated from fossil fuels, or from renewable sources such as wind or solar that are even more costly.

The potential of algae to be used as microscopic power plants was first discovered by Hans Gaffron, a German researcher who fled the Nazi party and came to the University of Chicago in the 1930s. Gaffron observed in 1939 that the algae would for a then-unknown reason sometimes switch from producing oxygen to instead creating hydrogen, but only for a short period of time.

For 60 years, researchers tried to harness the power potential of algae, without success.

A breakthrough came in 1999 when University of California at Berkeley professor Tasios Melis, along with researchers from the National Renewable Energy Lab, discovered that depriving the algae of sulfur and oxygen would enable it to produce hydrogen for sustained periods of time.

Melis was working on research for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, investigating how plants repaired themselves when damaged by conditions such as lack of sulfur, an ingredient necessary to make proteins.

Melis found that algae must eventually be supplied sulfur to survive, but he was able to repeatedly switch hydrogen production on and off by changing the algae's environment.

Melis launched a company, Melis Energy, in 2001 to try to commercialize a technique that harnesses algae's ability to turn sunlight into hydrogen. In the fall of 2001, the company built a bioreactor containing 500 liters of water and algae that can produce up to 1 liter of hydrogen per hour. A siphoning system extracts the hydrogen, which is stored in its gaseous state.

The company is continuing to refine the process and improve its reliability, while also searching for investors so that it can increase production volume.

Melis was tight-lipped about projecting a date when the technology could be used for mass production.

He said that his team of researchers at Berkeley has thus far only been able to achieve 10 percent of the algae's theoretical production capacity, but in the near future he will publish an advancement for peer review.

Once the process reaches a 50 percent yield, Melis said it would be cost-competitive with fossil-fuel energy.

Because the algae require ample sunlight, Melis said the Southwest United States would be a likely region to build production facilities.

Being able to cost-effectively produce hydrogen from a renewable source "would grow demand for hydrogen extensively," said T. Nejat Veziroglu, president of the International Association for Hydrogen Energy.

Veziroglu said that if the United States had a Manhattan Project-like commitment to developing hydrogen production, it could create the necessary infrastructure within 20 years.

"If half the money being spent on terrorism was spent on hydrogen production, we'd have a permanent solution to terrorism," Veziroglu said, referring to the link between some oil-producing countries and terrorist activities.

Melis is one of many researchers around the world vying to reach hydrogen nirvana. Projects are also underway in England, Germany, Russia, France and New Zealand.

Fuel Cell Car Coasts Across U.S. By John Gartner Win a 50" HDTV or a Xerox Printer!

2:00 a.m. June 5, 2002 PDT WASHINGTON -- Call it the little fuel cell engine that could.

DaimlerChrysler's Necar 5 completed the first transcontinental journey of a fuel cell powered vehicle on Tuesday. Even its owners weren't sure the feat was possible, considering the technology's nascent state of development.

Although renewable-energy backers hailed the accomplishment, most agree that it's too early to tell when or if hydrogen will replace petroleum as the predominant source of transportation energy.

The Necar 5 sedan left San Francisco on May 20 for a 3,262-mile trip that provided the first durability test for a fuel cell vehicle. The trip featured diverse weather conditions that included rain, snow, sleet, as well as 95-degree heat. DaimlerChrysler said the most rigorous test it had performed previously was a 600-mile ride in California.

"We feared everyday that we weren't going to make it," said Wolfgang Weiss, who led the team of 16 engineers and technicians that drove the Necar 5. Weiss said the greatest challenges were getting stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic in Chicago, and the days when the mercury surpassed 90 degrees. "Fuel cell engines don't like to get hot or stand still."

Weiss said travelling across the Rocky Mountains required the technicians to make several on-the-fly adjustments to the engine, since the higher elevations provide less oxygen for the engine -- a problem that future generations of fuel cells will have to adjust for automatically.

DaimlerChrysler conducted the test, which took 85 hours of driving over 12 days, to demonstrate that progress has been made in developing fuel cell vehicles. The company said these vehicles are not likely to be commercially available in quantity until at least 2010.

Car companies are developing fuel cell engines as alternatives to internal combustion engines that rely on the finite reserves of fossil fuels. The U.S. dependence on foreign oil for 60 percent of its energy needs is seen as a security threat.

"Today we are showing what is possible beyond fossil fuel dependency," said DaimlerChrysler head of fuel cell development Ferdinand Panik.

The Necar 5 is powered by a methanol fuel cell engine designed by Ballard Power Systems of Vancouver. Methanol comes from natural gas, coal, or biomass substances such as wood. Methanol is seen as superior to petroleum because its major byproduct is water vapor and it contributes only a fraction of the harmful pollutants.

The methanol fuel for the Necar 5 was provided by energy company Methanex, which has distributors across the United States.

According to Weiss, no components of the fuel cell engine had to be repaired during the journey. An electrical short caused by moisture delayed the trip for one day, and two belts, four fuel filters, and one water compartment had to be replaced.

The trip ended in front of the U.S. Capitol to garner support from Congress, which boosted research spending on fuel cell vehicles by 19 percent in fiscal year 2003, according to Sen. George Voinovich (R-Ohio) who was on hand for the event.

Sen. Carl Levin (D-Michigan) said the success of the Necar 5 gave us a "glimpse of the green future." But Levin admitted there was a "long road to go" in making fuel cells commercially viable.

Across the Potomac River in Arlington, Virginia, the leading minds in automotive research gathered at the Department of Energy's Future Car Congress to discuss the transition from petroleum to renewable energies such as fuel cells.

Representatives from government, the auto industry and chemical companies agreed that moving away from petroleum was inevitable, but the how, when, and with-what-fuel remains uncertain.

During presentations at the conference, industry executives touted several candidate fuels that can power fuel cells including methanol, ethanol, natural gas, gasoline, or liquid or compressed hydrogen. Companies are developing fuel cell engines or "stacks" around each of these sources, but it's too early to tell how many, if any, could compete with gasoline.

"None of the (renewable fuel) technologies has a clear advantage," said Dick Ziegler, director of the transportation program at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Bob Parks, associate secretary at the Department of Energy, said the agency is "committed to making hydrogen America's clean choice," but would not say if any of today's fuel cell technologies would someday compete with gasoline engines. "It could be something that we haven't even thought of yet."

General Motors vice president Larry Burns said the cost of fuel cell vehicles is the major challenge to their success. Burns said the price must be reduced by 90 percent to compete with internal combustion engines.

In addition to cost, researchers also must determine how to significantly increase the storage capacity of fuel cell vehicles to enable them to drive as far as a gas car without refueling. The Necar 5 required about twice as many gallons of methanol as a gasoline car, according to DaimlerChrysler.

Once the questions of cost and storage capacity are answered, the fuel must then be made available to the public. Additionally, fuel must be just as convenient as today's gasoline is at plentiful pumping stations, said GM's Burns. He said moving to a "hydrogen economy" will require the cooperation of energy and chemical companies. This move should coincide with the introduction of fuel cells for home heating and mobile applications.

"It's nothing short of reinventing the automotive industry."

Burns said that when asked how he could sleep at night with so many pressing questions left unanswered, he replied "I sleep like a baby. I wake up every two hours crying."
