We recently had a beautiful day here in Providence, Rhode Island, and Ellen and I thought it would be nice to take the ferry out to Newport. The sky was blue and clear and as we waited for the ferry to start we saw a large brown military helicopter circling above the nearby rooftops. As it slowly turned its repetitive circles it had that familiar determined aspect of seeking something or someone out below. But everything seemed peaceful and the only disturbance nearby was caused by some seagulls fighting over a fisherman’s scraps on the edge of the dock. More >

Is Kerry really as shallow as he appears to be? He went to Bill Clinton just before the latter went into surgery to ask for campaign strategy advice. Clinton, the darling of the DLC, who has said nothing against this war. (Whereas Gore has been eloquent on the subject.) Who has only mouthed some “third way” mumbo jumbo about the need for enduring patience as our leaders gradually find their way in this post 9/11 world. Yes, Clinton is popular, and if he could go on the stump he would help Kerry. That would be a boost. But Clinton also appears to be totally out of touch. More >

Yes, like the proverbial bull in a China shop we have created a mess in Iraq and now we, the US, have a responsibility to clean up after ourselves. And this sense of moral obligation is understandable. But before concluding that we have no other choice but "stay the course," I think we should also ask ourselves some questions. More >

We all know that politicians always talk about doing the “courageous” thing, perhaps because they so rarely do so. And that boasting of being “courageous” is merely another method of pandering. They know, or believe, this is what voters may want to hear. More >

With the Republican control of Congress many scandals are being either covered up or simply ignored. Watching the Democrats (on CSPAN) attempt to budge their Republican chairmen on various committees to act has been quite a spectacle. Since the Democrats lack the votes nothing happens, except, perhaps, rote and spurious expressions of the democratic process.

I kind of like Al Gore nowadays. And the speech he gave recently at MoveOn struck just the right note. "How dare they," he exclaimed, allow Abu Ghraib to happen. And all the rest. All the dirt which is immediately swept under the rug as soon as it appears. When Bush was elected president many of us knew we were in for an extremely corrupt presidency.
