Dream for Peace - the United Nations' resolution 55/282
11 Jul 2005 @ 10:17, by Judih Haggai

The General Assembly, in resolution 55/282 of 7 September 2001, decided that, beginning in 2002, the International Day of Peace should be observed on 21 September each year. The Assembly declared that the Day be observed as a day of global ceasefire and non-violence, an invitation to all nations and people to honour a cessation of hostilities during the Day.

It invited all Member States, organizations of the United Nations system, regional and nongovernmental organizations and individuals to commemorate the Day in an appropriate manner, including through education and public awareness, and to cooperate with the United Nations in establishing a global ceasefire.

Here it is in black and white, people. September 21st sounds like it could be a great day. (Or did somebody already say that 3 years ago?)

In response to this important resolution, the United Nations Postal Administration has decided to commemorate the International Day of Peace by adopting a three-year annual global peace stamp issuance commencing on 21 September 2004. On that day, UNPA issued a set of six commemorative stamps in the denominations of 37¢, 80¢, F.s. 0,85, F.s. 1,20, € 0,55 and € 1,00.

The Designs and the Designers
The stamp designs for “My Dream for Peace One Day” stamp issue were obtained through an agreement between the Lions Clubs International and the United Nations.

Every year, the Lions Clubs International sponsors a youth global peace poster contest. Children from around the world, ages 11 to 13, submit artwork, which is judged on originality, artistic merit and expression of the annual theme. One grand prize winner is chosen among 24 finalists each year. The Lions Clubs International has given UNPA and other participating postal administrations the exclusive right to use the artwork of the finalists from this competition for the United Nations global peace stamp issuance.

The Lions Clubs International created the International Peace Poster Contest to give young people a chance to think about world peace and creatively express what it means to them. Following are the names and quotes of the winners of the 2002/03 competition who were chosen by UNPA for this year’s “My Dream for Peace One Day” stamp designs.
