Hill Station Blues: Name in a log
 Name in a log7 comments

Some misunderstandings appear to have occurred in connection with the name in this log. The first log of my divising and which found me going through several mental manoeverings. The newness of this as yet unknown locale and dimension to my life in relation to an unknown group of people or readers seemed to demand an exactness of posturing hard to pin down. Several permutations were tried out along similar lines before the one above finally settled into its domain with out further ado.

The manoeuvrings however were not encountered with such ease. A whole life of a few decades, spanning different continents together with the adopted ones of a then-partner and now-friend were seen foremost as having a definite colonial colouration. You can take the white African out of the bush but not the bush out of the African white. A basic connection seemed a fundamental requirement allowing hopefully a broader range of topical viewpoint than without. Also it could reflect, at a glance, connotations not generally considered within the greater picture whilst being backdrop too, to statements of whatever kind so as not shock!

Le Corbusier is now accepted since the recent publishing of Charles Jencks’ new book as being really quite successful in incorporating as many as 4 or 5 coded and or symbolic meanings into the design of his buildings. These add up to cosmologicial interpretations and strive to add meaning on multiple levels simultaneously. In other words, I suppose, different levels of existence and perception are crossed or traversed and reached by the construction of ONE space for the people experiencing the buildings, a transmutation. This is not easy task, and Corb has proved himself a veritable master of the art.

In no way can I suggest that my humble offering competes at such a level, but the example, as of 2 days ago, is current and newly topical, of what also seemed applicable in the chosing of this log name. First for Hillstation, two meanings maybe three. As a family we were first “stationed” in central Africa in a mountainous area adjacent to plains, one such mountain rose from the back of the house literally, the forest could be touched by putting an arm out of the kitchen window at the rear. Secondly, the traditional meaning of hillstation is of a place away from the Summer heat and pace of city life while still retaining notions of definite home. It is to be with the real people of the country, also tending their land which in itself suggests a wholeness of living. Thirdly, the then-partner now-long-friend has similar associations in his colonial heritage from India and Burma, where the Hillstation notion is the quintessence of that life even now. His life, even more dramatic than mine was shared with others equally in dramatis personae, but so far never recorded or given acknowledgement. When something difficult is once known, like the hectic pace of city life, it can never, never be unknown to ones self, how ever hard one tries, it cannot be unknown. And especially if perhaps sad it leads to the next colouration.

The Blues - in the “Recherche aux temps perdu”, the “longing for lost times” there is also very much the “hoping for the future”. Secondly on this addition, my then-partner had been a professional Saxophonist and jazz musical arranger after the war for many years. Thirdly, this type of music carries definite resonances within the entire art world for both the Modern and Change, the lulling and syncopating modulations representing tough breaks with the past, a drug to perceptions, crossing the spectra of existence without moving an inch. A bit like the buildings of Corb!

When a friend forwarded to me a Letter from Zimbabwe this became the impetus for the initial cliff leap into blogging. Zim was a country in which I schooled without domicile but had many friends there. It is one of those experiences that cannot be forgotten, and one which one is forced to watch the unfolding of events to ever more wretched states, a wanton destruction of the most organised and successful country in Africa. The bread basket of Africa was secure with social and economic infrastructures in place for all aspirations to some form of respected living within its means, traditional or modern with future hopes well within the bounds of reason. My appreciation for modern architecture was discovered here while all of 12 years old; the famous five points of architecture exemplified by Corbusier and which caused him to be universally acknowledged as the genius of the Century. The destruction of this country is no different to the platoons fighting now in some Afghan Wadi, striving to take a hill or river, securing it and then being told to pull out, and to start all over in a few weeks time to secure the same hill and river again for so called unknown reasons.

The hillstation is a comfortable safe retreat both in life and cyber life, an open house of definite welcome, and rest. A place too of discussion and ideas, of projects well underway undisturbed, of openness to the views of others as long as they are not restrictive to any of the matters taken in hand here, imaginary or real, and all else that goes with being in someone else’s home of the heart. It is a place of relative happiness for the well travelled very much recognising the past in planning for the future.

Visitors may admire such a place, but they should beware because they do not and may never know how and what events brought such a place about for its user. The overcoming of such hurdles represents personal successes offering a share in their achievements whilst paying homage to the past.

Actually, one would really like to be there. To emphasise the establishment of Hillstation a cyberspace meditation platform was created on a beautiful hill in Botswana, which exists in reality too, at least for those who know it, all of which is preferable to nothing. So it does exist, but we are not there, except when we return to the very name in the log!

27 Feb 2007 @ 14:06 by nraye : Projects underway
in chronological order:

1. Yoga Pavilion on Kgali Mountain - commenced planning 1984, still searching architect, preferably local.

2. Publication of sequel to Modular Man by Le Corbusier. Discussions underway with possible co writer.

3. Restaurant Franchise for completely vegetarian / Ayurvedic food and lifestyle regime, with 6 month and 2 year diplomas for all staff to be able set up on their own, mushroom style, eventually worldwide, tweeking to include recognisable cultural factors. The rules applicable to maintaining long life and health are complex and involve minute considerations, as yet, even now, unheard of in the West. - Seeking identification of location. Could possibly at some time create a rights issue for shareholders, need to know if the internet can support such an issue, safely.

4. Book for same - free to shareholders.

27 Feb 2007 @ 14:08 by nraye : Dawn workout on Mount Khgale overlooking
the Kalahari Desert

Taking the Lobatse road south of the capital, take a right turn at the local school painted turquoise blue and follow the track towards the mountain until reaching an open space in the bush and scrub overlooking a dried river bed.

Follow the path to the north of the Satellite tracking station, towards the south of the mountain. When almost reaching the central part of the southern massif, watch out for path turning right towards the foothill of the mountain. This slowly climbs steeper and steeper. When almost at uppermost plateau level, there is an open outcropping of piled boulders forming a cool ledge with foliage overhangs and a small cave (see Poem Jungle in the City) with an Eastern view point over the dam and hills on the other side. After resting, continue towards the summit and cross the open flat rock surface with its small pools of clear water. This could be one ideal spot for a yoga work out, or continue on to the actual geological summit to view the North facing Kalahari desert aspect for a suitable peaceful spot, remembering in the Southern hemisphere the Sun, and sunrise is in the North.

This session of yoga will form the testing ground and trial location for the future siting of an eventual a built platform. A Platform of Peace. A place to practice Peace Exercises within Constant time frames for maximum benefit to both place and participants.

The sessions starts will a laying of mats and removal of stones or dead wood to create a solid surface. While seated quietly in Padmasana it is nice to just take in the view of the brilliant morning sun rising over the distant hills of the Limpopo river valley area and the Kalahari itself towards the West. Some large birds may suddenly show themselves to reinstate their claim on what is essentially their territory, but with offerings of assurances with peaceful intentions they will be pacified and resume normal life patterns.

Some Salutes to the Sun, to remind oneself of the limbs, some twists, some rests before going into Lotus proper for however long for acquirement of total quietude. The bird song will become particularly vocal and colourful at this point, often indicating a sure guide to actualisation of the relm of Peace. The breeze will be rustling the leaves and even a snake may swish past, in a flash, as part of its investigation of the scene. All should merely be observed and passed on thoughtfully. Other sounds may waft up the mountain sides from distant villages, a herdsman calling his sheep and goats, a drum banging, a baboon barking and leaping about playfully.

Whilst slowly regaining real time consciousness so to speak it will be like returning to another world from where one had been, but with a deeper awareness, akin to the deeper ocean seas. A sense of both being very much there but also simultaneously far away, could suppose this is breadth of vision in the true sense. When making such an effort, it is the beginning of a critical mass point of shifting modalities; others may be just a little moved through association or proximity to gain greater thoughtfulness about their business and life, to make the right choices and help others.

By this time we back down at the foothills of the mountain making our way through the now hot sun back towards the truck by the dried up river bed. It could be surrounded by a herd of wandering cattle moving their way slowly through the scrub looking for leafy morsels of fodder, this can be difficult when it rains but 3 months of the year. The truck doors and seats will be burning hot from the sun, the doors have to be opened on both sides to create a through draft before settling behind the wheel and driving back to town.

28 Feb 2007 @ 15:30 by nraye : Dawn Site Visit 28-2-07
Was out at the site this morning to review above plans. It occurs that perhaps several small pavilions enough for one person should be sited at several levels, not just on the summit, in preference to one largish platform for yoga group. One is either at constant learning stage inwardly or outwardly sufficiently disciplined for freedom from group.

What is a general opinion here I wonder? Does the architect have anything to say yet? The point being that nothing happens without taking the first step, got to grasp the acorn, as they say!! This is an experiment in acorn grasping and planting.

In continuation of thoughts - these platforms or pavilions if it is decided that several are better, should also each be of a different design, depending in situation surrounding each and site interpretation. This would accommodate different attitudes or moods, would also promote a newness of experience each time, with elements of expectation built in. Originally the idea also was for all shoes to be left, Indian style at foot of mountain, but suggest this should be amended for a footwear safety shelf (not be taken baboons) to be situated by each platform somewhere.

Also envisaged was some form of water feature. It would have to be self replenishing as the pure natural habitat would suffer with pipes of water going up the hill. Maybe there should just be a scuplted bird bath size pool, which the user fills with fresh water as an offering to the desert, and cosmos, and also to refresh themselves with afterwards before departing.

It is a pity that night pavilion watching is quite out of the question owing to wild animal activity, danger of falling off mountain, in dark with unlit paths and all manner of dangers. This is supposed to be a place in the wild, it would be nice to keep as such, without losing sight of original idea.

1 Mar 2007 @ 13:31 by nraye : Rights Issue question
Mulling over this too. Seemed only correct to acknowledge internet supporters in dialogue with any projects by granting a share or shares of the project should it eventually fruit. The questions on mind are concerning should it be 100 shares or 500 initially and how does one cope with the question of ID. Would not be fair for someone to get three or more helpings of pudding after all.

Back to the Site. We really need input here from various peeps on this. Perhaps one platform after all is best. It could rather serve as an indicator of the designation of this mountain, one of yoga. The water feature could be carved out of the rock, as they did at the Baja caves in Maharashtra. They carved a giant cistern in the rocks, catching the flow from the mountain rockface above, and which of course always remained very cool and fresh. Again, in all churches, there is a niche, a small apse by the side of the altar or on both sides. This is named the Piscine, (latin (ancient roman) for bathing pond. The same connotations from both examples could be incorporated here, on the mountain plateau somewhere, without incongruity.

The platform itself could be the most discreet, falling leaves, dead wood, should not look out of place, while un attended for how ever length of time. So perhaps something almost akin to a ruin may be an appropriate form of structure.

28 Mar 2007 @ 10:26 by gravitonring : ha ha i thought it was Hill Street Blues
when i first saw Hill Station Blues, i thought you might be talking about the TV show which was based on an African American ghetto near Pittsburgh PA where my home is, the Hill District is close to downtown Pittsburgh and has many new ethnic groups, however the African Americans still play a role there nurturing the new melting pot...

26 Apr 2007 @ 15:56 by nraye : The PLAN
The Plan for the western style ayurvedic restaurant takes a hold.

There are many yoga's, the yoga of cooking is called Annayoga.

This involves certain practices, sprinkling the food with drops of water to cleanse it, only certain types of people are permitted to do the cooking and all handling of any item related to food, it is believed special graces (honours) are conferred on those who undertake to serve the food (not just the cooking), the cooking pots are of a certain design, common place in India, but actually specific to the concentration of taste and nutrient and relative fast speed of cooking time to very low heat ratio. Leftovers from the day are only as a last resort used the next day, never longer, and food should be at the most heated only two times and never frozen (a sprinkle of frozen parsley on a whole dish will not cause harm).

Obviously the food used should be grown nearby without chemicals and sprays and in a relatively nice environment. The panoply of spices which in ayurveda are considered a basic essential to vegan dishes will have to be imported in the same way as they are exported to every country in the world. Many do already grow in Africa, as remnants of the large Indian populations of previous times, especially along the railway lines, which used imported labour from India, bringing their own essential ingredients, and were literally replanted along the new railway line route.

I have been told that the work put into such a restaurant would count as the Practical work essential for a qualification in an aspect of Ayurveda. The main idea of the restaurant is the demonstration of wonderful vegan protein dishes available from a vast range of pulses, seeds, and grains and also those most beneficial for the 3 main seasons of the year according to each persons constitution. Sounds complicated here but this is the least worrying aspect. In most cases as long as the dishes are season compatible they should automatically be person compatible. Side condiments will add the zest for individual preference. Again the main purpose of such a restaurant to demonstrate the wonderful variety of flavours and textures of food sources which are easy to grow, high yeilding, and accessible to the many. Once such a treat has been tried, doing without all the favourite meats does become less of a consideration and there the whole process becomes a REDUCTION in PAIN at a VERY HIGH LEVEL ACROSS the BOARD of LIVING HAPPY people, animals and plants.

21 May 2007 @ 15:09 by nraye : With Belief
Things Happen - without there is nothing.

Creating one's own universal centre in material form with the precise intent and dependency of inviting others to partake of novel ideas in both form and thought for the betterment of all, to give something lasting however small that can be taken away by guests, is the first and foremost idea of my Restaurant. A Restorative, in the French tradition of the famous word, will be the restaurant of my making.

Outside of the Western media eye, hopefully will meander its own little following of patrons.
