A brief account of evolution, revealing the purpose of life.
Newslog 2 Evolution of Thinking Beings
It seems reasonable to suppose that life occurred and developed on planet Earth, and anywhere else, as a fulfilment of one of the many possible ways of expressing universal energy – surely as a mild and gentle fulfilment, by contrast with the mindlessly violent way of much of the physical universe, but a development that will have by far the greatest and most profound effect.
Life on Earth could have become static when it reached the single-cell stage. The population of cells would adjust to the volume of chemical soup in which they swam, and thus a balance would seem to be achieved.
But while life is positive the opposite is negative - death. Single cells possessed the means of reproduction by splitting in two, the aim of which is to increase numbers. Greater numbers would reduce the available amount of chemical soup, causing a rising number of deaths. This also struck a kind of balance but life’s positive aim to live and progress was frustrated.
To relieve their frustration the single cells turned to their only other source of food –each other. As groups of cells joined to become organisms this practice continued. This was when, on Earth if not everywhere else, competitive instinct established itself and became a central feature of evolution.
In my view there is only one possible purpose of life. It is related to the fact that life does not remain static – it progressively develops in a wide variety of ways. An inevitable feature of the progress of nature, in its most adaptable, ie animal form, is that it goes hand-in-hand with the advance of intelligence, the ultimate end of which is truth. So the purpose of life stands revealed – the discovery and realisation of truth.
Evolution, by mutation and natural selection, always entails some advance in intelligence. The human species resulted from a special mutation giving a very big advance by an exceptional increase in neocortex capacity. The ‘intention’ had been to enhance intellect, enabling us to cancel out disadvantageous inhibitions etc of instinct. In fact, the mutation gave humans the ultimate intelligence potential. In the event the increase was too large to be handled immediately and was split into two, one part going to enhance the existing conscious mind/self, the other separated, unused and seemingly unnecessary. But that separate mind was independent, out of reach of the conscious self’s control, free to develop in its own way, which was to fulfil truth.
The influence of competitive instinct, with high intelligence applied, has characterised the human race and dominated our history throughout, despite our growing true awareness. At the same time that we built awe-inspiring mosques and cathedrals we waged hugely destructive wars; we contrived to blend exquisite joy with abject misery and to adjust our conscious minds to both.

I have made the mistake of implying that any species achieving high intelligence divides it into two minds, the conscious and postconscious. While that is the likely outcome it is possible that the whole additional mass of neurons be added to the previously existing conscious mind, making one function equivalent to the conscious and postconscious combined and with the huge problem of quickly learning how to act truly as one, and survive. Hmmmmm?
