Why do moths fly around my light bulb on the porch?

"Thousand" of moths, "every day," while I am not not even on my porch.

So asked, on his blog (2 Oct 2005 @ 22:36), a "shy, introverted weirdo" (Hey, his words, OK? --- I think he meant it jokingly ? the bit about his being shy and introverted, that is.) Okay, so maybe the question wasn't phrased quite exactly in that way (I don't think he used the word "moth,") nor was it really much of a question. Or was it?

Theories abound. People are very opinionated about them, too.

What to say?

According to Pulseplanet, the explanation is: "moths use the moon for navigation, when they're flying across the landscape. So they fly at a constant angle to moonlight, and the moonlight tends to come in parallel, because the moon is so far away. However, if you bring in something that looks like moonlight, like light bulbs, light coming from light bulbs, right down to them, they actually think they went past the moon, so they circle back, and then they circle again and then pretty soon they just keep going round in circles, and they go right around what they think is the moon, so they're very confused.?

Who is to blame? Some blame it on the person who turned the light bulb on, on his porch. Some blame the moths. I don't know, maybe it's all the fault of the moon.

Well now that you mention it, I have been having trouble with the Moon myself, lately......

12 Oct 2005 @ 17:03 by uncleremus : Really, now?
What's {link:http://www.newciv.org/nl/newslog.php/_v17/__show_article/_a000017-000291.htm#comments|your story}? Was the moon in the wrong place again last night? Or was Mars sitting on top of a tree? :0)

12 Oct 2005 @ 17:49 by uncleremus : ashanti has written a poem, too, called:
"The moon was in the wrong place," I would give a link to it, but as it is, her blog, "African Drumbeat," is not open to the public. So, one would have to sign in as a member of this network in order to read it.

13 Oct 2005 @ 05:25 by ashanti : Ummm...
Actually, last night - and this is now a different last night from the previous last night - the moon was missing altogether. Completely AWOL. Not there. Nada. Methinks the Moon is bored......

13 Oct 2005 @ 11:45 by swan : Sure seems like
the moon is up to something.

"shy, introverted weirdo", oh come on! How would they know that? This is the internet, anything is possible but "shy, introverted weirdo"? I don't thinks so...on Mars, maybe...

17 Oct 2005 @ 01:35 by uncleremus : No argument here ;-)

"It's the old rule that drunks have to argue and get into fights.
(...)
Last night the moon came dropping its clothes in the street
I took it as a sign to start singing,
falling up into the bowl of sky.
The bowl breaks. Everywhere is falling everyhwere.
Nothing else to do.

Here's the new rule: break the wineglass,
and fall toward the glassblower's breath."
