I had a fascinating dream, which I suspect has some very important meanings. In the dream, I was part of a volunteer program which provided people to escort prisoners from one place to another in Europe (yes, I know, it makes no sense, but remember that it WAS a dream...).


I was a participant/volunteer in this program, and I - along with a couple of others - were escorting a prisoner from one place to another. The leader of our group was my old boss, at my former job. He was a man I deeply respect (even though the job sucked) and to this day, I hold him in very high esteem. There were two others in the group. One was a woman, about ten years younger than I am. The other was male but my memory of him in the dream is indistinct.

We were taking the prisoner to a place where he would be for overnight. In the moring, he would be returning to his original location. In the process of this dream, I spent a considerable amount of time with the prisoner being escorted - a young man of moderate stature and long curly hair. He was on death row, for a reason I didn't understand (I don't think that they have the death penalty in Europe, do they?). I got to talk with him quite a bit, and so, got know him pretty well. As a result, I soon realized that there was alot of good within him. He was a very nice/pleasant and very spiritual young man. I found myself continually wondering what it was that had caused him to be condemned.

While he was staying in a holding area (a large plexiglass walled off section of the room), the rest of us were staying in an area which was set aside for us overnight. I checked, and was informed that I would be needed in the morning, as well, to take him back to his original location. I found myself wondering how I would get ahold of the people back home, especially my wife, to let them know that I would be away for one more day. I remember being very aware of the fact that there was a seven-hour time difference, and wondering if the difference would affect my needing to be home relatively soon.

Then I woke up, wondering where I was - was I still in Europe?. It took me a few moments to realize where I was, and that this had been a dream.

Note: I had been travelling in Europe a couple of weeks ago. But where the thing about the prisoner came from, I have no idea. Maybe I've seen too many detective or "True Crime" TV shows lately... :-)

I just wonder what it meant. It seems to have some significant meaning in my life. Methinks that the presence of my old boss from a job, that turned out to be a trememdous disappointment, indicates something about lost opportunity or taking the wrong road. There is also something about deep/severe injustice involved, perhaps suggesting that there must be a lot wrong that needs to be addressed. I'm very open to comments on any of this...

Job 33:15-16..."In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falleth upon men, in slumberings upon the bed; Then he openeth the ears of men, and sealeth their instruction."

When the creator "openeth the ears of men," it is like opening a "path" to access the hard drive of a computer (brain).
When the creator "sealeth their instruction," it is like downloading a computer program (which has subroutines allowing the operator [you] to make choices (free will)).

The "symbolism" (computer language) when properly interpreted can give you a clue to your future.

Dreams, from which you wake, and then have to differentiate present reality from the dream, are not uncommon and may cause temporary confusion. There is even such an account in the New Testament.

It sounds as though you had this dream after you returned home from Europe.
Your dream seems to me to deal with multiple issues 'some' listed:
1. A new "patient" who is currently incarcerated;
2. Your former boss still being your leader;
3. Your love for your wife but there is this younger woman in the dream but not much of the male co-worker;
4. Your views/attitude toward convicts and those who violate the law;
5. Your views/attitude toward the death penalty.

I've had such a dream. In one (I was actually living in a hell hole of a place) I awoke and thought I was living in a swanky hotel in a room with a fantastic view. Something was awry as I didn't remember moving from one place to the other. If I had chosen to stay in the swanky hotel, I realized, I would have had a problem coming back to reality.

In another dream, early morning on the day of inaugeration (Sunday) 1980 or 1981, of Ronald Reagan, I awoke out of the dream in which I was leaving a restaurant. I had just exited out the door when I noticed a man squatting down and leaning against the wall with a cup out-streched as though he was begging for money. I looked away, then realized that he looked like Ronald Reagan. I looked back again and sure enough it was him. I continued on my way without saying anything to him or giving him any money.
In about March of 1986, Batesville, Ark., we crossed paths in a restaurant. I immediately remembered the dream and didn't say or donate anything to him.

your symbols in your dream will mean the most to you and most of the people in your dreams are an aspect of you. Perhaps something about your spiritual beliefs are in question? I believe the death penalty would mean your ideas about what happens to you/your soul when you die are in conflict. Some people have trouble drifting away from their life of religious beliefs and it oftens shatters their world to think it just might be wrong.

while only you can know the complete meaning of your dreams, I offer my feelings about it for your consideration: don't rule out a parallel reality, in which your spirit does certain things in another dimension in order to fulfill something you wanted to understand. In your dream you are aware that you are not in the same time zone, right? You know you have one reality here while you're living another one there. This experience allowed you to see deeper into a person who was condemned, you found the good and spiritual in him. I think this is the main point of your dream, Craig.

the issue of injustice, which you dealt with on your own to see deeper into this condemned man (whoever that was may not be so important, he may represent an archetype), is something that DOES need addressing in our criminal/penal system. There may be a few prisons that actually do some rehabilitation, and some people as part of a jury who can see beyond evidence offered in court to understand a person's soul...there is a lot yet to be included, Craig. Perhaps this dream is bringing this up to you as a therapist to do some more work within the prison system? Many people in prison are out of touch with their souls and God, and I don't mean religion. (I know there are a lot of born-agains in prison but that is still not really getting to the core.) People need to get back in touch with their core selves and to heal pain (fear, anger, violence, etc.) Not as a means to excuse their actions, (focus more on personal responsibility) but to heal and help the public remember that these are people too!

Personally, I think that if people were taught from childhood on that what they put out they will get back in some way, at some time, is one way to prevent crime. What questions did you feel were not answered here?

Yes, I just walked away from it. Several days before, maybe even a week or two, the sum discussed was around $300,000,000.00.

Your "a little more" touchs on one of my favorite subjects, justice. I do not have a diploma, but I do have the experience for at least a masters degree in wholesale criminal justice. I'm right in the middle of reorganizing the legal system and although I have personal deadlines to meet, like in sales, you have to make some compromises. Talk about hard ball - it would make a "pro's" head swim! Fortunately, G.O.D. is directing the orchestra...I'm just the "cursor" in their computer.

I have been working on our website today and so this info is right in line with my working on a page about dialogue processes.

Thought you may be interested in the following. There is a term and process that involves recovering aspects of the self within waking or sleeping consciousness: 'gestalt' -whereby you are everyone within your dream, and through a process of inner dialogue you can communicate with these various aspects to gain important insights. This process of dialogue then can lead you to work with those repressed energies and aspects of the self so there is eventually more integrative wholeness. One can dialogue directly through a writing process to bypass the logical mind. I would suggest a direct dialogue with each character to ask them questions. It can be a short and concise process, that can also involve dialogue between dream characters as well. I have worked with this process often over the years and it works like a charm. Through talking to the people, or even the elements of the art object or dream, the client begins to recognize the buried emotions that come to the surface. The focus of therapy is to play out the parts to reintegrate them and the emotions they represent). A really good book I read, worked with and referred to many of my clients over the years: ‘The Dark Side of the Light Chasers, by Debbie Ford. {link:http://www.enotalone.com/books/1573227358.html|Book Review} Debbie Ford is a consultant, teacher, and integral faculty member of the Chopra Center for Well Being in La Jolla, California. Finally, I have my own process which I created for myself and have shared with friends and clients, where I sit in meditation and ask all the aspects within myself that most want to communicate with me, to gather round a table where we can dialogue. I tell them that sitting at this table enables them to receive what they most are desiring/needing right now. I then ask them to say what's on their mind, and after hearing them, I ask them what one thing can I do or what action can I take to support them getting their needs met. This has the potential to bring amazing insights and frees up information and energy to be utilized more creatively. I have often felt much more whole, grounded and nourished after this process, as creative ideas have rushed to the surface for me to act upon and the aspects of myself come to be acknowledged and their (my) needs met. Of additional benefit is when you sit down with a friend or family member to do this process, and find that the answers you receive, will often be in compliment or even be identical answers. This really affirms the perfection of guidance that comes through as having benefit for all involved.

These are interesting and useful links.
Your last comments about your meditative process are really neat. They remind me of parts work in hypnotherapy - where you metaphorically represent the parts involved in a given question.
