Coke vs. Water. (this is pretty scary)

WATER

1. 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated.
2. In 37% of Americans, the thirst mechanism is so weak that it is often mistaken for hunger.
3. Even MILD dehydration will slow down one's metabolism as much as 3%.
4. One glass of water will shut down midnight hunger pangs for almost 100% of the dieters studied in a University of Washington study.
5. Lack of water, the 1st trigger of daytime fatigue.
6. Preliminary research indicates that 8-10 glasses of water a day could significantly ease back and joint pain for up to 80% of sufferers.
7. A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on the computer screen or on a printed page.
8. Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of colon cancer by 45%, plus it can slash the risk of breast cancer by 79%, and one is 50% less likely to develop bladder cancer.

And now for the properties of COKE

1. In many states (in the USA) the highway patrol carries two gallons of coke in the truck to remove blood from the highway after a car accident.
2. You can put a T-bone steak in a bowl of coke and it will be gone in two days.
3. To clean a toilet: Pour a can of Coca-Cola into the toilet bowl and let the "real thing" sit for one hour, then flush clean. The citric acid in Coke removes stains from vitreous China.
4. To remove rust spots from chrome car bumpers: Rub the bumper with a rumpled-up piece of Reynolds Wrap aluminum foil dipped in Coca-Cola
5. To clean corrosion from car battery terminals: Pour a can of Coca-Cola over the terminals to bubble away the corrosion.
6. To loosen a rusted bolt: Applying a cloth soaked in Coca-Cola to the rusted bolt for several minutes.
7. To bake a moist ham: Empty a can of Coca-Cola into the baking pan, wrap the ham in aluminum foil, and bake. Thirty minutes before the ham is finished, remove the foil, allowing the drippings to mix with the Coke for a sumptuous brown gravy.
8. To remove grease from clothes: Empty a can of coke into a load of greasy clothes, add detergent, and run through a regular cycle. The Coca-Cola will help loosen grease stains. It will also clean road haze from your windshield.

For Your Info:

1. The active ingredient in Coke is phosphoric acid. Its pH is 2.8. It will dissolve a nail in about 4 days. Phosphoric acid also leaches calcium from bones and is a major contributor to the rising increase in osteoporosis.
2. To carry Coca-Cola syrup (the concentrate), the commercial truck must use the Hazardous Material place cards reserved for highly corrosive materials.
3. The distributors of coke have been using it to clean the engines of their trucks for about 20 years!

Well, as a chemist I have to make some comments about this. Coke is for sure not a healthy drink (I don't like it at all), but some of those affirmations are too exaggerated, some are true for any carbonated drinks and even for natural substances like lemon juice, and some others are not true at all.

Phosphoric acid is a strong acid, but only when it's pure. When you make a solution of it the acidity decreases considerably. If Coke were really so acidic we couldn't drink it because it would burn our mouth and throat. Phosphoric acid is used as an acidulant in the coke (acidulant E 338), together with citric acid (the same of oranges), and both are present in very little amounts in many drinks and foods.

Acids in general are a good way to remove rust stains. For example simply lemon juice (citric acid) is a mild acid which can do this, and besides it's also useful to remove greasy stains, and we're not afraid of lemon juice... And the same happens with nearly all carbonated soft drinks because of the carbonic acid that they contain, coke is simply another one.

In my opinion, this text is a hoax or a urban legend. What you should all check is the amount of sugar that those cans of coke and other soft drinks have. They have around 20 GRAMS OF SUGAR PER CAN, that's too much! So for sure, it's much healthier to drink water :-)

Hmmm! It all depends what filtering system you're using (excuse the pun). I happen to like both water and Coke though I rarely drink Coke.

I don't believe in RDAs. I drink water when I feel like it and mostly from the tap, which is recycled in London. I even drink water from public loos (toilets). If I feel like drinking Coke, I have some. I don't think of either as being harmful or healthy, they are just drinks.

Cheers.

6 Nov 2006 @ 19:43 by Brittney @169.204.230.198 : how much sugar is there?
This web site should say how many teaspoons of sugar there is in a can of coke and water...

23 May 2007 @ 22:04 by Bob Jones @69.178.10.48 : Replying to brittney
I have to question where your brain cells are brittney!!!
In pure water there is no sugar. And in case you missed silviamar comments he said theres about 20mg of sugar in a can of coke.
Silviamar, Im in agreement with you about the dilution factor with the phospheric acid however there is something to be said about the quantity that individuals are consuming, true? However because I work in a water laboratory I feel that most individuals probabaly dont even know that the reason coke companies add the phospheric acid is to preserve the ingredients within the can. Another thing this web site is not a complete hoax its just out to make coke look bad, the statments about water are true however I also heard that law inforcment officers carry around in their vehicals Mt.Dew to clean blood off the pavments too.
PS: Incase you were wondering brittney! Propel, gator aid and other similar water soft drinks are not considered pure H2O.

You cite allot of supposed studies and facts. Where are your sources? Without them this article is useless.

1 Aug 2007 @ 06:33 by johnny @67.150.173.79 : Sugar in can of coke
One can of coke at 12 oz has 39 grams of sugar, not 20 grams. See

He said "coke and other soft drinks have around 20 g of sugar" There are several sodas, juices and bottled drinks with 18g, 20g, 23g, etc. of sugar in them that you think are good for you but really are not.
