Twenty years ago, when he was president I was one of the scoffers who considered him an "amiable dunce." Since then, I've left the 'left' (l call myself a "classical liberal"), consider myself more 'open-minded' than I used to be, and have realized that though he was indeed amiable, Ronald Reagan was not a 'dunce' at all, at all.

In the last few days since his death on Saturday, I've watched tapes of his speeches and learned more about his background and life, and found my eyes watering up at times.

Whatever mistakes he might have made as president (a matter of dispute), he did set forth a vision of government and the world which I now share to a considerable extent. The great communicator had great substance behind the great form. I predict that as time goes on, more and more people will recognize the greatness of the man and the importance of his presidency.

Rest in peace, Mr. Reagan. Your name will be remembered for a blessing.

For any reader who may think I've gone meshugenna, read this piece by Peggy Noonan, who worked with Reagan. It might do you some good.
