In a field of infinite possibilities, all things are possible including America winning the World Cup, perhaps? And pigs might fly.

In the last few weeks I've been seeing English flags hanging on pub windows and on people's house windows. At first, I thought the BNP (British National Party) was on a massive recruitment campaign, which has to be bad news for a woman of colour like me. It was only later that I realised the flying English flags were part of the buildup to the impending FIFA World Cup. Phew! On second thoughts, football? For a whole month? That's just bloody marvellous that is!

Since everyone has an opinion about football, here's my two pennies worth.

For those who are either aliens or animals that don't care about football, I'm talking about the game involving two teams of 11 players, grown men in shorts, chasing a ball, scuffling over the same ball, and trying to score it into a net. After 45 minutes they take a break called half-time. Then the teams swap sides and run around for another 45 minutes trying to score. If it's a crucial match and no team has won, there is a penalty shoot-out until a team wins.

To make things more interesting they have devised a rule called the offside rule. It's supposed to prevent players from scoring too many goals. Correct me if I'm wrong, I thought the whole point was to score as many goals as possible? Don't men love to score or am I being too presumptuous here? (wink) The rule is just plain silly. Maybe it's just me, I'm probably too simple to understand such a complicated rule.

Part of the buildup to the football invariably includes the football songs that are going to be released before the event. Millions of fans are going to rush to the shops to buy their favourite songs so they can chant them during football matches. There are obviously record companies waiting in the wings to rake in the profits. A few of the songs have been pretty catchy. I loved the Baddiel and Skinner song:

[[Three Lions on a shirt
Jules Rimet still gleaming
Thirty years of hurt
Never stopped me dreaming

It's coming home
It's coming home
It's coming
Football's coming home
It's coming home
It's coming home
It's coming
Football's coming home Three Lions]]

Another catchy tune was World in Motion by New Order vs the World Cup Squad though I think John Barnes was rubbish at rapping:

[[Loves got the world in motion
And I know what we can do
Loves got the world in motion
And I can't believe its true

We're playing for England (In-ger-land)
We're playing the song
We're singing for England (In-ger-land)
Arrivederci its one on one ]]

Isn't it interesting how football unites people on the one hand while creating disunity on the other? So many fights over a game involving grown men in shorts chasing one ball (though some of them look pretty good in shorts). What is it that Rodney King said after the 1992 Los Angeles riots? "Can we all get along?" Yes, why can't we use this opportunity to achieve lasting peace? Let us use our favourite football songs and chants to support all teams. When England is playing an important match, I have a good mind to visit a pub crowded with English fans and support both teams. It might not make me popular. I'll probably get chucked out of the pub, but at least I'll be demonstrating unconditional love, right? Or do you lot think I'm off my trolley?

I don't intend to support any of the 32 teams playing this year, but if you're going to twist my arm, there's only one team for me - France. Why France? France has only got Thierry Henri on their team, who I believe is not only good looking he is very good looking. What's the matter? You didn't seriously think I was going to support England because it's the country of my birth, did you? How shallow do you think I am?

Speaking of which, the last time England won the World Cup was in 1966. It's not surprising because the World Cup was to herald my birth a month later. I wasn't about to be born into a nation of losers now, was I? Will England win the World Cup this year? I'm saying nothing.

Another thing I find fascinating about football is that it's the only time you'll see grown men cry. Put men in shorts and place them in a field and they get emotional. Poor babies! It's only a game, no more important than tiddlywinks. It's not the end of the world if you lose, you'll get another opportunity in four years time.

For many people, football is like a religion. You hear people singing:

[[Walk on, walk on, with hope in your heart
And you'll never walk alone
You'll never walk alone You'll Never Walk Alone]]

Come on, it's only a football match! Then again, who am I to impose my moral values on anyone? Walk on.

In a field of infinite possibilities, America has won the World Cup zillions of times. Just in case it's not to be this year in this reality, maybe France might win it or Brazil, Germany, Spain, Italy, Argentina, Ghana, Saudi Arabia...

I'm sure I'm missing out an important team here...

Maybe Japan might win it or Angola, Togo, Serbia and Montenegro, Ecuador...

I'm still missing out an important team...

Aha, England.

Eng-er-land!
Eng-er-land!

Come on England!
Come on England!

"Land of hope and glory, mother of the free." We live and hope.

May the best team with the best looking player i.e. France, win the World Cup.

Have fun if you're watching.

Peace and love,
Enocia

Home Sweet Home!
