The cards assail you...
The cards assail you and friends pester you
For an evening of muscatel and cakes.
Gifts in red, blue, brittle packaging
Choke the beleaguered mantelpiece
As the fresh-fledged day unfurls her wings
Rekindling the candles of extinguished memories.
But beneath the tinsel and confetti,
Beneath the thin crust of sugary icing
Things remain much the same:
Only the wounds gape wider
The shadows loom ghostlier
And the day appears suddener.
