Millions to fight compell'd, to fight or die
In mangled heaps of War's red altar lie . . .
When legal murders swell the lists of pride
When glory's views the titled idiot guide
Excerpts from Shelley 1809,
in response to a journalist's (called Finnerty) reports leading to his arrest, and being tried for libel, there was a fundraising campaign to support the journalist in prison amongst the huge popular support. See the Times UK July 13 2006.
The poem was dedicated to the person with whom Shelley eloped in 1811 and is the first printed reference to his wife. In all the poem is 172 lines and was first publised annonomously, and which subsequently are thought to have provoked his expulsion from Oxford University. This one copy which has just been found is being sold by Quaritch antiquarian publishers. It is the only copy known.
Nraye - hoping this is acceptable to Poet Tree at this moment?
