there are no blooms on my dogwood this year...

Penance of Winter

By Marissa A Spencer

The dogwood stands bereft of buds
Sitting in its winter silence; slumbering
The branches twist and turn to the sky
But no harbinger of Spring awaits

No promises, no rememberings
As if no Spring has ever existed
As if Winter has grasped eternity
and choked the flowering graces

The fairies sleep hidden away now
When they arise to touch the bending boughs
Their magic will not bring forth blooms
The dogwood will stand mute and still

No nodding or fluttering white flowers
A fairy wand cannot appease the earth
She will hold back her bounty this time
Cloistered in the penance of winter

7 Feb 2008 @ 17:53 by judih : today is infinitely cold
cold penetrates branches
twigs beg to be still
thick winds would break their frozen stance
today is infinitely long
night descends with a shiver
dare i listen to rumours of light?
a crackling crocus getting ready to revive?
i dare, winter, i dare

gather our fires together and get warm!

8 Feb 2008 @ 03:44 by judih : fires on
burning with a crackling sense of humour

Frozen blood be still.
Season without an ending;
icy mists of grey.
