Simple, explicit and redundant, tic-tac-toe is most often played by very young children (they eventually move on to more sophisticated games such as dots and boxes). This reputation for ease has led to casinos offering gamblers the chance to play tic-tac-toe against trained chickens.

Animation: Fractal Images of Formal Systems, by Paul St. Denis and Patrick Grim
The fractal image shown above, sections of which are progressively enlarged through
the process of animation, offers an analytic presentation of all possible tic-tac-toe games.
The game of tic-tac-toe is a closed system.

"A closed system resisting the incorporation of new ideas risks [stagnation or, worse,] atrophy. By not adopting or implementing viable ideas, a closed system ceases to properly serve the environment it lives in." Conversely, "...open systems adapt quickly to the environment in which they live by possessing permeable boundaries through which new information and ideas are readily absorbed. By incorporating viable new ideas, an open system ultimately sustains growth and serves its parent environment. Open systems possess a stronger probability for survival [and evolution] due to this adaptability."
