All that is necessary is to lay down, not just the body, but one's heart and the whole of oneself.

---Neville Shulman

Take one step away from yourself---and behold!---the path!

---Abu Said

There comes a time when one asks even of Shakespeare, even of Beethoven, is this all?

---Aldous Huxley

Stephen Crowley/The New York Times
When Vice President Dick Cheney, standing on the dais, far left, called her name to ratify President Bush's election, Representative Stephanie Tubbs Jones of Ohio, far right, rose and challenged the vote.

"There was a point where this served a purpose," said Susan Gwinn, chairwoman of the Athens County Democratic Party in Ohio. "But I think we passed that. We need to move on."

The woman speaking to this morning's New York Times is not only chair of the Democratic Party in my county, but also Regional Counsel for that political organization AND Commissioner of the Board of Elections here. She is referring to yesterday's objections in the US Congress to Electoral College representations of the Presidential Election as held in Ohio. If there was a point at which Ms. Gwinn saw a purpose to any question whatsoever regarding her powerful involvement in politics in this town, I don't know when or where it was. And she ain't talkin' about MoveOn.org. Where to, fearless leader?  More >

Explaining a koan to Satsu, Hakuin said: "Now do you understand?"
Satsu said: "Will you please explain it again?"
Just as Hakuin opened his mouth to speak, she interrupted and said: "Thank you for your trouble," and with a bow, left the room.
Hakuin exclaimed: "I've been overthrown by this terrible little woman!"

Even if I could utter a wise word, the hearing of which would guarantee you instant enlightenment, it would still be like throwing shit on your heads.

---Wu-Men

Moonlight and the sound of pines are things we all know
zen mind and delusion distinguish sage and fool
go back to the place where not one thought appears
How shall I put this into words for you?

---Han-Shan Te-Ch'ing

A couple of incidents yesterday make me realize how far from a discussion of issues politics has strayed in the United States. Maybe the goal no longer is calm discussion or learned debate. Maybe instead we want Opinion And Passion, which is the logo of an AM talk radio station I was listening to. Perhaps we've forgotten how to disagree with someone in a civilized fashion. Does anyone learn the skill at home or in school anymore?  More >

In the photo Dana, Ilona and other guests at a houseparty "interact" via computer with Michael Moore.

The universe is like a safe to which there is a combination, but the combination is locked up in the safe.

June gone, now, July's moon.
I age: how many more to meet?
Won't let mind linger on the endless things beyond me.
I'll try to finish this one small cup.

Nothing is often a good thing to do and always a good thing to say.

---Will Durant

It's hard to follow Professor Durant's witty truism with a Log entry, but I'll promise at least to be brief. Whitman wrote the great American poem and called it Leaves of Grass. In this political season we are reminded the leaves turn brown and die without healthy, well-nourished roots. This is the election of the grassroots in America!  More >

Death speaks to us with a deep voice but has nothing to say.

---Paul Valery

Any life, no matter how long and complex it may be, is made up of a SINGLE MOMENT---the moment in which a man finds out once and for all who he is.

---Jorge Luis Borges

The present never ages. Each moment is like a snowflake, unique, unspoiled, unrepeatable, and can be appreciated in its surprisingness.
