Thanks for replying...so what is your vote anyway? 28 Sep 2002 @ 14:36 by ming : Vote I vote No on both. But I think it is more involved than that. The groups one might be funding probably do other things too. What if it is a group that feeds thousands of people that would have died otherwise, and then once in a while it kills a bunch of people for no good reason? I don't think anybody should ever knowingly kill innocent people, but it might possibly jeopardize something else if the only choice is always to stop them. 28 Sep 2002 @ 19:30 by spells : The "Pre-emptive Strike" Vote Dear Ming, Yes, I understand your voting in that way, which seems the most lucid view on both questions. Many more would say "Yes" and "No" respectively. Obviously the questionaire is designed to make the reader actually THINK about the two statements seen together, causing them to realize just how related they are. Today's so=called terrorists are tomorrows' revolutionaries depending upon who is writing the history. Similarly today's "war heroes" are tomorrows' Hitler youth, and arguably regardless of who re-writes history. It is very interesting how such issues as world events or the potentials for WWIII are rarely if ever even mentioned by the "spiritual" community. I've actually been told by many who belong to the New Age mindset that world events are of no interest to them, because "love and light" are all they need to know. This is like saying theory is so wonderful that we need not bother ourselves with daily practice. I must differ with this view because I consider practice to be even more important than philosophizing, speculating or sermonizing. Spirituality today reflects this vacuum between stated goals and application, and much of that starts by living one's life in accord with social values that are markedly anti-spiritual. I'm referring here, to such things as militarism and materialism. So long as these social values are in place, spirituality cannot flourish, any more than a garden can grow upon solid rock. Thus the spiritual importance of such posts as "Confessions of an American Ex-Patriot" and "The Pre-emptive Strike Vote". Let us strive to emphasize the practical, to have a living spirituality.... 29 Sep 2002 @ 02:39 by vaxen : no to both... "Chopping wood and carrying water." I agree with you, spells, on the state of most things 'new age' however in the 'Saddharma Pundarika Sutram' we learn that the lotus, one of natures most beautiful creations, grows out of the mud at the rivers bottom. The simultanaeity of cause and effect are hinted at in this allusion. 3000 worlds in a momentary state of existance. 'Ichi Nen San Zen.' I certainly agree with ming, as well, that we must take into view the grander scheme of things. We know that we must unite this world as 'one world.' This is beyond mere 'phileo-sophia' and is a real need. Yet we are confronted at every node with prejudices brought about by differences in Nationality, race, and so forth...ever read "The Iron Heal" by Jack London? The Hegelian method gives us thesis, antithesis and synthesis. Out of this forge, if you will, it is hoped that a 'new' world system will evolve. One which is more equitable towards the people which constitute it... that will require great strides in dis-solving the 'old world' of 'nationalities' and 'races' and the 'prejudices' born of both. Onward, onwards ever onward...till in that day we will be able to face one another as children of this 'mudball' and not confront one another as seperate 'factions' from different 'races' and 'nations.' I live for that day. 29 Sep 2002 @ 08:50 by spells : Honesty, truth and clarity Dear Vaxen, You said; "Onward, onwards ever onward...till in that day we will be able to face one another as children of this 'mudball' and not confront one another as seperate 'factions' from different 'races' and 'nations." I'm sure this theme of your post is shared by everyone here. May I ask however, how you intend to manifest this enlightened age? I personally recommend honesty, valuing truth above all other things and cultivating clarity as a guide and navigator. I see these aspects as the most lacking of all in modern society, since "consumerism" is the primary religion which the majority worships.
