Hello everyone

After 2 days off the computer, here is (in part!) what got my
attention,
just 4 days before the US mid-term elections. Did you know that in the
last
mid-term elections, the level of participation from eligible voters was
only 38%?... Quite astounding for a country promoting democracy around
the
world. This time around, quite a lot once again hinges on those
disillusioned American voters.

Let us pray they'll make the best choices...

Maintaining Lower-Case Democracy (November 1, 2002)
[link]
Like many progressive Americans, we were distraught when we learned of
Sen.
Paul Wellstone's sudden death in a plane crash on Friday. It was, as
many
have observed, like losing a member of one's extended family. However,
while the Senator certainly would have been flattered by the outpouring
of
grief in his name over the past few days, his life and his works make
it
clear that he would have wanted his memory to endure not as eulogies
but as
political action. The coming week is a crucial moment in this country's
history for just such action. Simply put: Any future checks and
balances on
Bush's extremism rest in the Democrats holding the Senate and winning
majority control of the House. (And if it can at all be helped --
keeping
one's eye on 2004 -- booting Jeb Bush from the Florida governor's
chair.)

Gore Vidal claims 'Bush junta' complicit in 9/11 (October 27, 2002)
[link],11581,819941,00.html
America's most controversial novelist calls for an investigation into
whether the Bush administration deliberately allowed the terrorist
attacks
to happen. (...) At the heart of the essay are questions about the
events
of 9/11 itself and the two hours after the planes were hijacked. Vidal
writes that 'astonished military experts cannot fathom why the
government's
"automatic standard order of procedure in the event of a hijacking" was
not
followed'. These procedures, says Vidal, determine that fighter planes
should automatically be sent aloft as soon as a plane has deviated from
its
flight plan. Presidential authority is not required until a plane is to
be
shot down. But, on 11 September, no decision to start launching planes
was
taken until 9.40am, eighty minutes after air controllers first knew
that
Flight 11 had been hijacked and fifty minutes after the first plane had
struck the North Tower. 'By law, the fighters should have been up at
around
8.15. If they had, all the hijacked planes might have been diverted and
shot down.' (...) Vidal, 77, and internationally renowned for his
award-winning novels and plays, has long been a ferocious, and often
isolated, critic of the Bush administration at home and abroad. He now
lives in Italy. In Vidal's most recent book, The Last Empire, he argued
that 'Americans have no idea of the extent of their government's
mischief
... the number of military strikes we have made unprovoked, against
other
countries, since 1947 is more than 250.'

Unprecedented

A new film documenting the rape of democracy - Lest we get over it.

Shown Tuesday, October 22, 2002, in midtown Manhattan

I have had a rotten feeling in my bones since I first saw a press photo
of
George W. Bush in July 1999. That feeling has expanded to encompass the
worlds this miscreant has polluted since he illegally took over the
White
House in December 2000. Two years later, mainland civilian America has
been
attacked for the first time since 1812 - if civilians were wounded even
then. The ethics of the corporate world are in worse condition than the
World Trade Center, as is the domestic economy and, by contagion, the
global economy. Democracy is being drained out of this country like
blood
by a vampire. So I have to laugh when George W. Bush speaks of
spreading
democracy to the Middle East when he is draining it here. What he plans
there is not regime change nor even war, but its ancient corollary,
plunder
and pillage.

Did an electromagnetic device crash the plane of Wellstone?

Carnahan, JFK Jr.?

Oct 29, 2002

I'm looking into the use of electromagnetic pulse (EMP) devices in
crashing
planes and more "coincidental" similarities between the "accidents"
involving Wellstone in 2002, Carnahan in 2000, and JFK Jr. in 1999.

All those "accidents" involved planes already descending towards their
landing that suddenly wandered off their approach paths and crashed. In
all
three cases, radio contact appears to have been cut off while the
planes
were still in the air, possibly indicating electrical failures on
board.

One way to sabotage a landing airplane would be to use a focused
electromagnetic pulse (EMP) device. These machines are already being
manufactured and marketed to law enforcement agencies to stop fleeing
vehicles. In fact, here is a link to a US Dept. of Justice document
describing these devices:

[link]

Theoretically, a person a few miles from the runway could bombard the
aircraft with an intense electromagnetic pulse, which could cause an
electrical failure, instantly knock out radio communication, disrupt
normal
engine ignition, and cause loss of steering control. The steering
control
surfaces on these airplanes are controlled by individual electrical
actuators that are mechanically linked to the rudder, ailerons, and
flaps.

This type of sabotage would leave no physical evidence on the aircraft,
although it's possible that people at the airport or in the general
vicinity might have noticed electrical anomalies like radio noises, a
crashed computer, telephone disruption, and so on. Who knows, there
might
even be an eyewitness, someone on the ground or in an air traffic
control
tower, who noticed that the aircraft's engines went silent or saw the
plane
careen off course.

That's why we need to get this information out. Did anyone out there
who
might have witnessed these three crashes see anything
out-of-the-ordinary
right before the "accidents" like computer crashes and intense phone
static? Did anyone suddenly see those planes go off course, as if they
were
electromagnetically "hit?"

Many say these are mere coincidences. Maybe so. I hope so because if
they
weren't coincidences that means our government or some powerful forces
behind it is in the business of assassination. But my hunch says I'm on
to
something. People still try to tell me Oswald acted alone in killing
JFK.
But that's largely been proven false.

Others tell me there is no use in pursuing such questions, that nothing
will bring these leaders back. Maybe so, but perhaps by exposing the
truth,
we can prevent more leaders from dying in such "accidents." Perhaps we
can
expose the powerful forces who might resort to assassination to
increase
their power and bring them to justice, or cause them to destroy
themselves,
as their own consciences catch up with them [that is, if they have
consciences]. In my 24 years as a journalist, writer and activist, I
have
tried to hold fast to at least this one conviction: a sincere search
for
the truth is always worth the effort. Is that not what our country, our
republic, should be about?

Sure, we should move forward with focusing on the Nov. 5 election and
trying to oust any Bush-supporting politician we can. We should support
Wellstone's Democratic replacement, altho it's difficult to see anyone
replacing him.

But these questions persist. Feel free to forward this and thanks for
your help.

Will keep you posted,

Jackson

SEN. WELLSTONE KILLED IN PLANE CRASH
U.S. Sen. Paul Wellstone (D-Minn.) was killed last Friday along with
seven
others in a plane crash in northern Minnesota. Wellstone, 58, was one
of
the most outspoken liberals in Congress; he opposed the use of force in
Iraq and was a longtime ally to environmentalists, earning a
near-perfect
96 percent lifetime score from the Washington, D.C.-based League of
Conservation Voters. Wellstone's wife and daughter were also killed in
the
crash, along with several of his aides. At the time of his death, the
senator was facing a tough reelection battle against Republican
challenger
Norm Coleman, who was handpicked to run by the Bush White House; the
race
could have determined control of the Senate. The staff of Grist is
saddened by the deaths and extends its deepest sympathy to the
Wellstones'
loved ones.

The Election Results: Which News Story Would You Prefer to Read on Nov.
6th?

By Bernard Weiner

October 24, 2002

The upcoming midterm election is, at the time of this writing, too
close to
call. One day, it looks good for the Democrats to retake the House and
keep
the Senate; the next day, there seems to be a surge for the GOP, with
the
Republicans set to hang onto the House and retake the Senate. What's an
editor to plan for on Election Night?

See how you react to the following alternative stories about the
election
results. And act accordingly. Your actions, donations, and volunteer
efforts during the next week or so will help determine which version of
the
post-election stories below you'll be reading on November 6.

Dems Eke Out Victory in House, Senate

(Associated Press) Washington, D.C. -- The Bush Administration
sufferred a
major political defeat in yesterday's mid-term election, as the
Democrats
narrowly edged-out the Republicans in enough House and Senate races to
take
control of the Congress.

"The Founders of our country, having suffered under King George, wisely
chose to build checks-and-balances into our system of government," said
Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle "They never again wanted any leader,
or
branch of government, to have that much power. And now, the citizens of
our
great country likewise have decided not to give another George too much
power, but to distribute it as a check and balance. I congratulate them
for
their wisdom."

Had the GOP held onto the House, and retaken the Senate, the Bush
Administration essentially would have controlled all three branches of
the
government.

Sources inside the White House, who choose to remain anonymous, report
that
Mr. Bush and his closest associates are furious at the election defeat,
and
blame "lying Democrats," "the media," and those who "distorted our
message
of peace through power." Apparently, their foreign and military policy
initiatives are on hold, along with plans to repeal Roe v. Wade, and to
nominate more far-right justices of the Supreme Court and numerous
appelate
judges.

"Since the Bush forces already control most of the major,
conglomerate-owned media," said the incoming new Speaker of the House,
Dick
Gephardt, "Mr. Bush, had his forces taken the Congress, basically would
have had all the reins of power in his hands. The damage he and his
right-wing cohorts could have done would have been immeasurable.

"It's plain that the American people want us to serve as a brake on the
more outrageous bills and nominations put forward by the Bush
Administration, and to move toward a more reasonable agenda in the
country.
That agenda would emphasize working with the world community instead of
going off on our own, and would concentrate more on domestic issues
such as
stablizing and growing our economy, health care, Social
Security/Medicare
reforms, prescription drugs for the elderly, education, environmental
protection, and so on," said Gephardt.

James Carville, Democratic consultant and former Clinton aide, put it
more
bluntly: "The arrogant Bush stallion has just been gelded. This is the
beginning of the end for Bush&Co. arrogance, dirty tricks,
unilateralism in
foreign affairs, imperial adventures abroad, giveaways to the rich and
corporations, environmental destruction. Our next step is taking back
the
White House in 2004."

---

GOP Ekes Out Victories in House, Senate

(Associated Press) Washington, D.C. -- The Republican Party narrowly
regained control of the Senate and held onto the House in yesterday's
midterm elections, thus assuring the Bush Administration total control
of
the Congress for at least the next two years.

"The citizens have seen through the Democrat lies and distortions of
our
record," said a jubilant Karl Rove, chief policy adviser to Mr. Bush.
"Now
we have a re-affirmed mandate to carry on our programs at home and
abroad.
And we will move swifly in the Congress to push our bills through, to
get
more strict-constructionist judges into place, and to continue our
course
abroad, forcefully asserting democracy and freedom around the globe."

Pat Robertson, a leader of the Christian Right, could barely contain
his
glee: "Now we're finally free to do God's work: to nominate more
God-fearing judges who will overturn Roe v. Wade, to permit more
freedom
for churches to act in concert with the government, to make permanent
the
tax cut to our friends and supportive corporations, to give more police
powers to the homeland-security forces, and to move toward Armageddon
in
Iraq and the Middle East, with true Christians surviving to usher in
the
return of Christ."

Richard Perle, influential national-security advisor, suggested that
"Iraq
might be just the first country" to fall to America's war aims, with
Iran,
Syria, Yemen and others to follow, along with North Korea, which has
admitted having a secret nuclear program. Perle dismissed as "wimpy"
fears
by some critics of the U.S. being engaged in one war after another, or
even
several at the same time.

Tom Daschle, the outgoing Senate Majority Leader, was distraught. "We
thought the American people would see through lies and dangers inherent
in
the Bush program, at home and abroad. But in a few key races that
tipped
the balance, the Administration pulled out all the stops, with loads of
money thrown in at the last minute for deceptive ads, dirty tricks and
so
on. I'm afraid we're in for a rough ride the next two years."

Daschle refused to comment on the rumor circulating around the Capitol,
that up to three GOP senators are considering "doing a Jeffords" --
that
is, resigning from the GOP caucus and joining the Democrats on key
votes
and organization of the Senate. That would keep Daschle as Majority
Leader,
and the Democrats in control of the Senate, and thus able to block some
of
the Bush Administration's more controversial bills and judicial
nominees.

If that doesn't happen, said outgoing House Minority Leader Dick
Gephardt,
"the U.S. is headed for one economic and foreign-policy disaster after
another."

In the 2002 Election, The Issue is Unchecked Power

October 9, 2002

Is this the most important election in US history?

With his TV talk of war, George W. Bush has blown smoke over what's
really
at stake today: the future of democracy. Not in Iraq; here in the
United
States.

Never in US history have we ever been closer to an unchecked one man
one
party rule than right now. And as the world's sole military
super-power, we
have made the crisis truly global.

The reality is simple: the right wing of the Republican Party controls
three of the four branches of government, and is just a single vote
away
from taking the fourth. The Executive, the Judiciary, the media and the
House of Representatives are all in Republican hands. The Senate
teeters on
the edge. And the USA Patriot Act, passed in the wake of September 11,
has
obliterated most of the Constitutional guarantees that made this
country a
democracy in the first place.

Should Congress go Republican in November, there will be no
institutional
check or balance left to guarantee that the democracy born here two
centuries ago will survive.

First, the Republicans control the Executive Branch, which it took with
the
first losing candidate in 120 years. Defeated in a popular election by
more
than 500,000 votes, with many more not properly counted, the
administration
is firing away with an aggressive far right agenda that's kept the
opposition off balance.

Second, the Republicans control the Judicial Branch, which formally
installed Bush into the Presidency, and which is currently dominated by
right wing appointees---many for life---dating back to the Nixon Era.

Third, the Republicans control the "fourth branch of government."
Virtually
all major US media is now owned by six corporations. With precious few
exceptions, there is no serious debate on the core issues that define
American life, and no mainstream coverage of the movements for peace,
social justice, environmental, labor, or minority rights to balance the
constant blare of right wing pundits.

All that remains in play---barely----is the Congress. The U.S. House is
firmly in control of the Republican Right. The minority Democratic
opposition is feeble, without strong leadership or direction.

Thanks to the defection of Jim Jeffords of Vermont, the Democrats hold
a
one vote majority in the U.S. Senate. And that's all that now keeps the
Republican far right from total and unchecked control of every branch
of
the United States government.

To this lethal mix has been added the USA PATRIOT Act, approved after
September 11, virtually obliterating the once-sacred guarantees of the
Bill
of Rights. Put simply: the Executive Branch now has the power to
arbitrarily brand anyone a "terrorist" with no tangible evidence, and
to
have that person imprisoned without formal indictment, access to a
lawyer
or even public notification. Hundreds of unnamed alleged terrorists are
thus being held indefinitely in Cuba and perhaps elsewhere with no
recourse. If unchecked, such openly contemptuous disregard for the
human
rights guaranteed in the U.S. Constitution will inevitably spread like
a
cancer to the core of American liberty and dissent.

The structure of our basic rights is as tenuous under George W. Bush as
under many of the third world dictators installed by his father when he
was
head of the CIA.

Any shreds of counter-balance left in the system will disappear if the
Republicans keep control of the US House and retake the Senate.

Globally, that extends to a Bush Doctrine touting the "right" to
intervene
in any country, and remove any ruler it does not like, regardless of
national sovereignty or international law.

The timing of Bush's latest rhetorical escalation has nothing to do
with
Iraq. Saddam Hussein is only the latest American-installed enemy of
convenience.

This anti-Iraq hysteria is about an aggressive, unelected US regime
aiming
to to complete the coup d'etat it began two years ago.

America's domestic economy is shattered, its stock market in free fall.
Unresolved multi-billion-dollar scandals still taint Bush from Harken
Energy and Vice President Dick Cheney from Halliburton. Under this
regime,
joblessness has skyrocketed and the quality of life has plunged.

The Bush remedy has been tax breaks for the rich and relentless
assaults on
organized labor, gays rights, women's rights, minority rights and the
natural environment. His foreign policy has been to trash international
treaties on atomic testing, missile defense, global warming,
international
justice and more.

Bush's latest war talk admits to no human or financial cost. He and
most of
his cabinet are chickenhawks who avoided service in Vietnam. They are
selling a video game war in which Saddam Hussein magically disappears
with
no American bloodshed, no crying widows, parents or orphans. The
American
veterans suffering from Gulf War I don't exist. Nor does the chaos in
Afghanistan left after removing the Taliban and failing to find Osama
Bin
Laden.

A real war against this particular Saddam Hussein could cost $100 to
$200
billion the current US economy can't afford. It could destabilize
global
oil supplies and infuriate much of the muslim world, 1.2 billion
strong.
The real costs could include skyrocketing oil prices, economic
collapse,
and terrorism escalated beyond our wildest nightmares, with the final
demise of liberty and peace.

The Republicans are running out the clock on the November election.
They
are winning their bet against Democrats too timid to oppose a war that
has
no clothes, and a declaration of global empire with no legs. After that
comes an endless procession of Orwellian enemies, conjured at will, a
permanent pretext for martial law.

The Harken-Halliburton attack on Iraq is Stage Two of the coup d'etat
that
began with the installation of an unelected president. It could be
completed November 5 with the final capture of the House and Senate.

If that happens, Saddam Hussein will be the least of our worries.

Bush Says He Does Not Support Independence For Taiwan

10-25-2 CRAWFORD, Texas (Reuters) - President Bush said on Friday the
United States would use its influence to ensure China and Taiwan settle
their differences peacefully and promised to make it clear to Taipei
that
Washington does not support independence.

In a news conference with Chinese President Jiang Zemin, Bush said the
United States stood by the "one China" policy, which acknowledges that
Chinese on both sides of the Taiwan Strait maintain there is only one
China
and that Taiwan is part of China.

"The 'one China' policy means that the issue ought to be resolved
peacefully," Bush said.

"We've got influence with some in the region. We intend to make sure
that
the issue is resolved peacefully, and that includes making it clear
that we
do not support independence," Bush added.

Taiwan's president, Chen Shui-bian, has voiced support for a referendum
on
formal independence from China.

The move outraged Beijing, which views the island as a renegade
province
and a linchpin in Sino-U.S. relations.

Beijing had hoped Bush would repeat a pledge not to back independence
for
Taiwan, which China says must eventually be reunified with the
mainland, by
force if necessary.

Nationalists headed by Chiang Kai-shek fled to Taiwan in 1949 after
losing
a civil war to Mao Zedong's communists. Washington shifted diplomatic
recognition to Beijing in 1979.

But the United States has offered Taiwan the biggest arms package in a
decade and Bush has pledged to do "whatever it takes" to help the
democratically governed island protect itself.

Bush did not repeat that pledge at Friday's news conference.

But during a visit to China earlier this year, he said, "When my
country
makes an agreement, we stick with it, and there is (something) called
the
Taiwan Relations Act and I honor that act, which says we will help
Taiwan
defend herself if provoked."

China says it is seriously concerned about the U.S. warming to Taiwan
under
Bush and has called on Washington to halt military contacts and arms
sales
to the island.

US Weapons Secrets Exposed (29 October, 2002)

Julian Borger in Washington

Respected scientists on both sides of the Atlantic warned yesterday
that
the US is developing a new generation of weapons that undermine and
possibly violate international treaties on biological and chemical
warfare.

The scientists, specialists in bio-warfare and chemical weapons, say
the
Pentagon, with the help of the British military, is also working on
"non-lethal" weapons similar to the narcotic gas used by Russian forces
to
end last week's siege in Moscow.

They also point to the paradox of the US developing such weapons at a
time
when it is proposing military action against Iraq on the grounds that
Saddam Hussein is breaking international treaties.

Malcolm Dando, professor of international security at the University of
Bradford, and Mark Wheelis, a lecturer in microbiology at the
University of
California, say that the US is encouraging a breakdown in arms control
by
its research into biological cluster bombs, anthrax and non-lethal
weapons
for use against hostile crowds, and by the secrecy under which these
programmes are being conducted.

"There can be disagreement over whether what the United States is doing
represents violations of treaties," Mr Wheelis told the Guardian. "But
what
is happening is at least so close to the borderline as to be
destabilising."

In a paper to be published soon in the scientific journal Bulletin of
the
Atomic Scientists, the two academics focus on recent US actions that
have
served to undermine the 1972 Biological Weapons Convention. In a move
that
stunned the international community last July, the US blocked an
attempt to
give the convention some teeth with inspections, so that member
countries
could check if others were keeping the agreement.

Mr Dando believes Washington's motive for torpedoing the deal, which
had
the support of its allies, was to maintain secrecy over US research
work on
biological weapons.

CHEMTRAIL HALL OF SHAME

Documenting Illegal Spraying Operations above the Pacific Northwest
Feature
Abstract: 2002 Chemtrails Over America The most comprehensive research
report on Chemtrails and the military applications to date.

[link]

This report differs from most research on Chemtrails because of the
credentials of the sources and the extent of the research. If you are
unaware of this blatant disregard for the atmosphere and biosphere....
then
this synopsis is a real eye-opener. Read how our leaders insist on
playing
GOD, without permission or safeguards.

Moral Dilemma

I have a moral question for you. This is an imaginary situation, but I
think it is fun to decide what one would do.

The situation: You are in the Midwest, and there is a huge flood in
progress. Many homes have been lost, water supplies compromised and
infrastructures destroyed.

Let's say that you're a photographer out getting still photos for a
news
service, traveling alone, looking for particularly poignant scenes.

You come across George W Bush who has been swept away by the
floodwaters.
He is barely hanging on to a tree limb and is about to go under.

You can either put down your camera and save him, or take a Pulitzer
Prize
winning photograph of him as he loses his grip on the limb. So, here's
the
question and think carefully before you answer the question below:

What film speed would you use?

Safe bet that it's ALL too true, and I don't have a camera.I would, however,do my best to capture that sweet scene in oils(appropriately).
