Ten million years of uncertainty5 comments

I may be numberless, I may be innocent
I may know many things, I may be ignorant
Or I could ride with kings and conquer many lands
Or win this world at cards and let it slip my hands
I could be cannon food, destroyed a thousand times
Reborn as fortune's child to judge another's crimes
Or wear this pilgrim's cloak, or be a common thief
I've kept this single faith, I have but one belief

"A strange security results when death is so close a companion. It can be felt while crunching along a beach, a skeleton walking on skeletons with the time machine turning in step, wavefalls and footfalls. A gleeful levity at being so brief, at feeling so exempt."
---James Hamilton Paterson, Sea Burial

"Life is the laugh of the actual in the face of nothing. There is so much to sense, think, and emote about, so much life to endure, such fullness of good and bad---and all of it, suddenly, nothing. Only laughter fits the gap. And he laughs luminously with the great swell of being nothing."
---A.A.Attanasio, Solis

Cede not your rights for the sake of security. Resist all trespass on your soul.

PAZ ...VERDE PAZ....!!!!
---Ivan Portela

More >

We can't solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them.
---Albert Einstein

THE WORLD AS I SEE IT, Albert Einstein (1934)

The most beautiful experience we can have is the mysterious. It is the fundamental emotion that stands at the cradle of true art and true science. He who knows it not and can no longer wonder, no longer marvel, is as good as dead, and his eyes are dimmed.

 The Child Next Door1 comment

"There is a dream dreaming us."

---A KALAHARI BUSHMAN

The child next door has a wreath on her hat;
her afternoon frock sticks out like that,
All soft and frilly;
She doesn't believe in faeries at all
(She told me over the garden wall)---
She thinks they're silly.
---Rose Fuleman, "The Child Next Door"

When sometimes one find oneself lost or somewhat disoriented---as if enchanted into a trancelike state---we say that one has been "pixy led." Many accounts can be found of pixies leaving gift or helping out, yet it cannot be denied that first and foremost they are pranksters and tricksters. Most of all they like to blow out lamps and kiss pretty lasses under cover of darkness. Won't you come along and take a pick, then? Oh c'mon, come along, and follow me into that curious world in which we round up all those strange ideas that occur in the small hours when all decent people ought to be sleeping but CHANGELING players are up and gaming...

"Being set on the idea
Of getting to Atlantis,
You have discovered of course
Only the Ship of Fools is
Making the voyage this year…"
---W.H. Auden

The variety of inventive ideas---and ideologies---that people can come up with never ceases to amaze me...
