There will be those who will want to politicize her death.
There will be those who will say she was an innocent victim.
And there will be those who will say she died because she was at the wrong place at the wrong time.

But unlike the September 11 tragic and innocent victims of the World Trade Center,
Rachel Corrie didn’t die because she was at the wrong place at the wrong time.
And Rachel Corrie was not innocent.
Rachel Corrie died because she was at the right place at the right time.

The place and time do not matter.
Nor does it matter to me for whom or for what she died on that day.
It is enough for me to know that she died because she cared.

She didn’t have to be there, but she was.
She was, because she believed a better world was possible,
And she believed in her part in bringing such a world about.
She was not innocent.
She knew what she was risking, she knew the danger,
Yet, she risked it all because she also knew that there are some forms of death
that are far worse and far more abhorrent to the spirit than death itself.

* LA Times (03-17-03): "A 23-year-old college student and activist from Washington state, Rachel Corrie was crushed to death by a bulldozer on Sunday [March 16, 2003] as her group was trying to block the demolition of Palestinian homes in a refugee camp in the Gaza Strip. The Israeli army called her death a "regrettable accident" but blamed the protesters for deliberately placing themselves in harm's way — part of what it said has been a pattern of reckless behavior by foreign activists in the West Bank and Gaza."

"She was very strong willed in her quiet way, but she wasn't at all self-aggrandizing," said Lin Nelson, a professor at Evergreen. "It meant a lot to her to be part of an effort to observe and witness and influence the world."

a senseless death. it does'nt in the least give me hope. and it is certainly nothing to live up to! the death of a young woman, barely out of her teens, only gives me great sadness as there is no need for such horror. it only would have taken a bit of respect for human life and dignity for the driver of that vehicle, undoubtedly made by 'caterpiller corporation and bigger than a damned house, to have just said no...but israeli automatons have no dibs on being automatons nor do any of the rest of the automatons involved in acts of senseless violence and flamed onwards by the nepotism of martyrdom in all of its' unlovely shades of death.

somewhere too you're forgetting maybe that this young girl believed that some things are worth dying for - (each person knows their own ) She she didn't choose to die - she chose to say that life is the most precious of things and she offered hers ! She loved enough to do so !

a person's life is more important or worth putting on the line for the sake of "Palestinian homes in a refugee camp"? Not in my book! The mesh of discernment was not activated here.

I mourn the death of Rachel Corrie, an angel from a place even better than heaven.
Rachel Corrie was murdered because she dared to put her life on the line in the service of humanity. She was murdered trying to stop the destruction of a Palestinian home by an occupying force in contravention of international law (sveral UN security council resolutions, the Fourth Geneva Convention and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights), a task that the corrupt cowards in suits that run our world and especially our country should have performed. Rachel Corrie made the ultimate sacrifice because spineless men had neither the guts nor the integrity to stand up to Ariel Sharon and his goons. Every person with even a trace of humanity in his or her body should grieve for the death of an angel named Rachel Corrie. I know my heart is heavy with sadness and anger.
