Dreams come alive on a bed of whimsy0 comments
picture27 Oct 2002 @ 19:02
"I love stories, tales, journeys, but I also love contrasts, incertitude, paradoxes, enigmas…
The Junebug symphony came to me as a pile of images and desires one can't keep in the attic anymore.

There's a room and a young man…
Who lies down in bed and dreams…Bad dreams?
So he wakes up and pursues his day…no he goes back to sleep and pursues his nightmare…
No he stays in bed and dreams his day, any how…Concretely, The Junebug Symphony is about singing, dancing, juggling, tumbling, flying, violining, saxophoning, contortioning and… mutating into rhinoceroses, dragons…

By the way, have you ever seen a Junebug?

Fall is here! Let dreams and nightmares blossom everywhere!"

"There was a pool
silver with shining water...
Here Narcissus...
came to rest...
to quench his thirsts...
and fell in love with that unbodied hope...
The vision is only shadow,
only reflection...
I know my image now...
And even in hell he found a pool to gaze in,
watching his image in the Stygian water."
---Ovid, Metamorphoses [6] iii 326

Until the End of the World (1991)
Directed by Wim Wenders. Written by Wenders and Peter Carey. Starring Solveig Dommartin, William Hurt, Sam Neill.

"They lived to see their dreams. And when they slept, they dreamed about their dreams."

"...and here you are, seeing yourself to death."

Synopsis:

In a variant of virtual reality, the movie features a bizarre invention with unexpected technical and philosophical complications. The 'visionary' invention is a camera that records 'the act of seeing' so that one person's vision can be transmitted directly into the brain of another---allowing even a blind person to see, if only vicariously. Others are drawn into the experiment, and ultimately use the technology to project the contents of their own minds, their childhood memories and dreams.

Soon they become addicted to watching their own mental images on-screen. The fascination becomes an all-enveloping, morbid obsession that, like heroin, displaces all other concerns. The addicts eventually become zombies incapable of relating to anything save their inward visions. (1)

Telepistemology in the Age of the Internet

"As the virtual world grows to encompass all aspects of our lives and online interactions shape our communities, influence our politics and mediate our close relationships, the quality of being real, which is accepted and assumed with little thought in the physical world, becomes one of the central questions of society..."

The Greatest Sedition is Silence0 comments
picture7 Sep 2002 @ 11:58
William Rivers Pitt is a teacher from Boston, MA. His new book, THE GREATEST SEDITION IS SILENCE, will be published soon by Pluto Press. And, yes, William is a contributing writer for Liberal Slant...sorry about that - NOT! :-)
The thing is that until, we do enter the "fifth dimension", I am afraid that we still do live in that world of DUALITY that some have been decrying here at NCN. Well, in a way, duality IS one of the blueprints of the world we live in, you know. Some will tell you that IT IS and some will claim that IT ISN'T or that it is something that must be transcended, or has been transcended already and so it is. The fact of the matter and the matter of the facts is that things probably are, as we all know, a bit more complicated and, shall I say, somewhat less "dualistic" (?) than that. Some believe that facts can be whatever one wants them to be (the lesson of relativity) and as far as duality is concerned, I am told that IT IS and IT ISN'T ( the lesson of quantum physics.) I sincerely hope that the unfolding DREAM OF A NEW CIVILIZATION will be the STRONGER DREAM and that the US vs. THEM attitude is a thing that can be transcended. In the meantime, I am thankful to writers like William Rivers Pitt, be they liberals or otherwise, for the tough stance they take on our world and our society and for the courage to call things out as they see them, for, indeed, THE GREATEST SEDITION IS SILENCE!!!  More >

Anyone remember that song from the Cadets?

"Meanwhile in the jungle: ...
When I woke up and my head started to clear
I had a strange feeling I was cooking gear
I smelled something cooking and I looked to see
That's when I found out they was cookin' me
Ooga booga, lemme outta here!"

"Meanwhile, back in the States:
Baby, baby, let's make romance
You know your old-time lover hasn't got a chance
He's stranded in the jungle sad as he can be
So come on pretty baby just you and me"

"Meanwhile back in the jungle:
So I jumped in the ocean and started to swim
My chance of surviving was gettin' slim..."

"Order = disorder; self = not-self; affirmation = negation; ultimate emanations of absolute art... I love an old work for its novelty. It is only contrast that attaches us to the past."

THE SPACE ELEVATOR CONFERENCE 2002 was held one week ago (Aug.12 - Aug.13)

The elevator in question would consist essentially of a cable, attached at one end to an ocean-going platform, and connected at the other end to a satellite in orbit some 35,000 kilometers above Earth.

Going up, anyone? (Private Group Begins Work on Space Elevator)

Sap and bough are grief and grim to me, engrievement fall,
And petals fall without relief...

At Play in the (fractal) Fields of NCN10 comments

Hail to you NCN… "Hail to you...for you perceive sensibility in the insensibility of the world, uncertainty in its certainty. For you are often conscious of others as of yourself. For you feel the anxiety of the world, its limits and its false unlimited assurance. For your obsessive need to wash your hands from the dirt of the world, for your fear of the absurdity of existence. For your subtlety which prevents you from telling others what you see in them. For your awkwardness, for your transcendental realism and your lack of daily realism, for your exclusiveness and your fear of losing your great friends. For your creativity and your ecstasy, for your maladjustment to what is and your adjustment to what ought to be, for your immense possibilities not yet actualized... Because your celestial might have been crushed by earthly brutality. For what is unique, original, intuitive and infinite in you. For the solicitude and the oddness of your paths. Hail to you!"---G. R. de Grace

I feel so much strength and yet so much vulnerability, here at NCN, so much grace and yet so much clumsiness, such guileless simplicity and so much confusion, such cheerful conviviality and yet so much loneliness. We listen, and we work things out carefully in our heads and lay them down in our newslogs and comments, through words and images so people will understand, and though we all aspire to the universal, we can't help but write and paint in the languages of Babel.

"There is a dream dreaming us."

---A KALAHARI BUSHMAN

The child next door has a wreath on her hat;
her afternoon frock sticks out like that,
All soft and frilly;
She doesn't believe in faeries at all
(She told me over the garden wall)---
She thinks they're silly.
---Rose Fuleman, "The Child Next Door"

When sometimes one find oneself lost or somewhat disoriented---as if enchanted into a trancelike state---we say that one has been "pixy led." Many accounts can be found of pixies leaving gift or helping out, yet it cannot be denied that first and foremost they are pranksters and tricksters. Most of all they like to blow out lamps and kiss pretty lasses under cover of darkness. Won't you come along and take a pick, then? Oh c'mon, come along, and follow me into that curious world in which we round up all those strange ideas that occur in the small hours when all decent people ought to be sleeping but CHANGELING players are up and gaming...

"It was the wind that gave them life. It is the wind that comes out of our mouths now that gives us life. When this ceases to blow we die. In the skin at the tips of our fingers we see the trail of the wind; it shows us were the wind blows...."
-----Translated from the Navajo by Washington Matthews, 1897

Thoughts of the wind come easily to mind as I think of that past Saturday which was somewhat of a "forum butterfly" day for me as I took some time fluttering around from board to board, feeling where the wind blows (taking the pulse of the web, if you will.) And sometimes, just like a butterfly, I do bring back something with me... pollen...the fertilizing element of the blossoming web.  More >
