Summary of the main 'products' of my research
2012-05-01, by John Ringland

My earlier work (up to 2010) focused specifically on understanding the transcendent context and the manner by which it gives rise to the empirical (virtual) context. The models attempt to capture core aspects of this situation.

I modelled these aspects first using mathematics then software and finally OWL ontologies.

The maths provides a mathematical model of a "general system" and a "general computational process", as well as a "general system simulator". It also provides a computational and system theoretic basis from which one can derive the Schrodinger equation (core dynamical equation of quantum mechanics) thereby indicating that the functioning of the quantum field as it generates classical reality is logically, mathematically and computationally equivalent to a general system simulator - which then suggests that the classical (physical) universe is equivalent to a virtual reality.

The software functions as a "general system simulator" - i.e. a universal simulation engine. It also provides a method for developing massively parallel software without having to worry about all the synchronisation and dead-locking issues that plague most parallel programming methods (this will become more relevant when CPU's have hundreds or thousands of cores). It also gives rise to methods whereby software can be built in a manner that is mathematically coherent and thereby amenable to mathematical analysis; e.g. for consistency checking, bug identification, etc. It also has many other potential uses... such as a possible approach for programming a general purpose quantum computer when they eventually arrive.

The OWL ontologies provide an "information system theoretic" "upper level ontology". I.e. a minimal yet complete set of basic ontological primitives that are sufficient to incrementally build up a conceptual framework within which the transcendent process (along with it's various features and functions) can be clearly described and via which the empirical context can be clearly located within the deeper metaphysical context.

This provides a candidate for a logically consistent ontological foundation, with a 'stub' that represents a fully functioning yet entirely empty virtual universe. Within this we can construct ontologies of empirical phenomena and verify their logical consistency within the context of an information system theoretic ontology.

These aren't complete and 'polished' technologies, but they are fully functional prototypes that can be further developed and adapted.

Here's a few links.

Anyway, those are a few of the main 'products' of my earlier work. There is also a lot more stuff on my website; too much to enumerate here.

BTW, whereas my earlier work was focused mainly on modelling the transcendent context, my current work is mainly focused on applying the transcendent understanding within the empirical context. Thus I have been modelling certain core aspects of the perceptual process in order to work towards an understanding of the core information processes that integrate experience and memory (at a sub-conscious level) and thereby give rise to the sub-conscious 'roots' of meaning, expectation and in general a sense of "orientation within the stream of experiences".

The aim is to eventually build what could be called a grok-bot, i.e. a software application that can automatically monitor some input and:
* become 'familiar' with it and develop a sense of 'normality' in regards to it (learning / conditioning),
* then be able to identify different conditions / events in its perceptual stream (recognition),
* to estimate the degree of normality or strangeness of any given sequence of events (comfort level),
* make predictions about future sequences of events (expectation) and
* explore the space of possible sequences of events (imagination / planning).

I see this as a low level component of the sub-conscious processes of an AI mind, providing basic capacities that can be later integrated to form more complex higher-level capacities.

BTW, this is the first time I have said anything publicly about my current project; I guess the secret is out. More details later...
