a poem for the new year

Rose Calico Skies

by Marissa A Spencer

A white-winter sky reluctant to surrender
Edged in a passionate rose calico sea
Images of old lover's eyes so tender
Staring down, making a mist out of me

I'm thinking I will forthwith fade away
Into a small nothingness, a wisp, a shade
Forgotten like a thrown-out bouquet
A distracted dalliance of life played

That rose calico sky; a fiery, bold scout
Of darkness, the stars, the moon; night
To save me from the self-thrall of doubt
Carrying me into a soft, silky twilight

I am sleeping in my rose calico quilt
In slumber so deep, the night birds are still
Releasing my soul and releasing my guilt
Now I gather my soul to follow my will

The colors fade as the dawn draws nigh
The fiery sea has ebbed to winter white
Finished for now is the rose calico sky
Leaving me hollow, wishing for night
